The elytra of females of the white-spotted longhorn beetle, Anoplophora malasiaca (Coleoptera: Cerambycidae), are coated with a contact sex pheromone, which was previously shown to be composed of at least three chemical groups. Individually, the chemical groups had little pheromonal activity, but a blend of all three exhibited activity equal to that of the crude female extract. Two groups are female-specific aliphatic hydrocarbons and ketones, which were previously synthesized and confirmed to elicit mating behavior.

To determine the association between geriatric disorders and dietary intake, validation of a food frequency questionnaire (FFQ) for elderly individuals is needed. We compared energy and nutrient intakes derived from dietary records (DR) and FFQ in an elderly population and compared the data against results from middle-aged individuals (30⁻68 years) from a previous study. Current participants included 65 women and 78 men (65⁻88 years) who completed FFQ and 7-day DR in a subpopulation of the Kyoto-Kameoka study.

The induction period for crystallization, defined as the time required to crystallize, was discussed during isothermal storage at -5 to -45°C for various vegetable oils; olive, safflower, rapeseed, corn, rice bran, soybean, and linseed oils. The induction periods, largely dependent on the oil type and storage temperature, were classified into two groups. The induction periods of corn, rice bran, soybean, and linseed oils were monotonically shortened as the storage temperature decreased.

A volatile compound was isolated from the fruit of Habanero pepper (Capsicum chinense) and related varieties and identified as 6-methyl-(E)-4-heptenyl 3-methylbutyrate by H and C NMR spectroscopy and two-dimensional NMR experiments, including HMQC, HMBC, and H-H COSY. The compound has a retention index of 1387 and is one of the major volatile compounds in Habanero pepper. This compound would be useful as a new flavor.

The filamentous fungus 1S-4 is capable of accumulating a large amount of triacylglycerol containing C20 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs). Indeed, triacylglycerol production by 1S-4 can reach 20 g/L of culture broth, and the critical cellular signaling and structural PUFA arachidonic acid (ARA) comprises 30%-70% of the total fatty acid. The demonstrated health benefits of functional PUFAs have in turn encouraged the search for rich sources of these compounds, including fungal strains showing enhanced production of specific PUFAs.

Background: The aim was to examine the validity of a triaxial accelerometer (ACCTRI) and a simplified physical activity record (sPAR) in estimating total energy expenditure (TEE) and physical activity level (PAL) in older adults with the doubly labeled water (DLW) method.
Methods: A total of 44 Japanese elderly individuals (64-96 years), of which 28 were community-dwelling healthy adults with or without sporting habits (S or NS group) and 16 were care home residents with frailty (F group), were included in the study. Basal metabolic rate (BMR) was measured by indirect calorimetry, TEE was obtained by the DLW method, and PAL was calculated as TEE/BMR.

Background: Dietary protein intake is inversely associated with physical frailty risk. However, it is unknown whether an association exists between dietary protein intake and comprehensive frailty.
Objective: To evaluate the association between protein intake and comprehensive frailty in older Japanese adults.
Background/objectives: The consumption of both green tea and coffee is known to induce positive health effects; however, it remains unclear whether there is an association between the consumption of these beverages and oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL). Thus, the present study investigated the relationship between the consumption of green tea and coffee and OHRQoL.
Subjects/methods: We analyzed cross-sectional baseline data in 2012.
