Background And Objectives: Recent research shows that locally injected dexmedetomidine enhances the local anesthetic potency of lidocaine via the α-2A adrenoceptor subtype in guinea pigs. However, little is known about the effect of locally injected dexmedetomidine on the peripheral vascular response. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of locally injected dexmedetomidine on the peripheral vascular response, measuring skin blood flow in the injected area in guinea pigs.

Data Sources: One case we encountered and a recent systematic review published in 2012.

Study Selections: In addition to our case, 23 cases identified by the previous systematic review regarding middle ear myoclonus in which surgical interventions were conducted.

Peritonsillar abscess (PTA) is conventionally considered to be a complication of acute tonsillitis, but no pathogenical association has been demonstrated. To investigate the precipitating factors in the pathogenesis of PTA, the clinical status of 117 patients with PTA and 78 patients with peritonsillar cellulitis (PC) were reviewed, comparing them with 188 cases of acute tonsillitis as a control group. The period between the onset of symptoms and the date of starting hospitalized medication was 4 to 5 days in all the three groups, with no significant differences.

Although percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) is one of the most suitable treatment options in patients with acute coronary syndrome (ACS), PCI for ACS patients with occluded saphenous vein graft (SVG) remains challenging. An 80-year-old man with previous coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) was admitted with the diagnosis of ACS. Retropharyngeal abscess complicated with torticollis: case report and review of the literature.

Tohoku J Exp Med

September 2007

Department of Otorhinolaryngology, Iwaki Kyoritsu General Hospital, 16 Kuzehara, Uchigoh Mimayamachi, Iwaki 973-8555, Japan.

Retropharyngeal abscess commonly develops among infants and small children, and is associated with the severe inflammation of the retropharyngeal lymph nodes located in the retropharyngeal space. Retropharyngeal abscess causes cervical pain, swelling, contracture of the neck, and in rare cases inflammatory torticollis, all of which result from an inflammatory process that irritates the cervical muscles, nerves or vertebrae. Here we report a rare case of retropharyngeal abscess with a complication of torticollis.

April 2007

Department of Anesthesiology, Iwaki Kyoritsu General Hospital, 16 Kusehara, Mimaya, Utigoh, Iwaki, Fukushima, 973-8555, Japan.

We compared the success rates of arterial cannulation with a wire-guided cannula (WGC) and the direct technique with a conventional non-wire-guided cannula (non-WGC). A total of 100 adult patients requiring an arterial line in the operating room were assigned randomly to undergo radial arterial cannulation either with the WGC or with the non-WGC. No significant difference in success rates and insertion times could be demonstrated between the WGC and the non-WGC (78.
