Background: In Hong Kong, breast cancer is the commonest female cancer. In addition to intrinsic risk factors that cannot be modified, other factors may be potentially modifiable. The objective of this report was to determine modifiable risk factors in association with breast cancer among Chinese women in our locality.

Lymphangiogram of a case of presumed lymphatic filariasis with left-sided cisterna chyli.

Radiol Case Rep

March 2025

Department of Diagnostic and Interventional Radiology, Kwong Wah Hospital, Hong Kong SAR, China.

Lymphatic filariasis is an uncommon condition in Hong Kong and is currently considered as one of the neglected tropical diseases by the World Health Organization. Blood tests are available for diagnosis of acute infections, but false negative results can occur with chronic manifestations of lymphatic filariasis. We present a case which illustrates how radiological imaging can help with diagnosis of lymphatic filariasis.

J Assist Reprod Genet

January 2025

Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Li Ka Shing Faculty of Medicine, School of Clinical Medicine, The University of Hong Kong, Hong Kong, China.

Purpose: To assess the association of serum vitamin D level and the live birth rate in women undergoing frozen embryo transfer (FET).

Methods: This is a retrospective cohort study involving 1489 infertile women who had frozen embryo transfer at two tertiary reproductive medicine centres from 2019 to 2021. Only the first frozen embryo transfer was included for women who had repeated transfers during the period.

Background: Data about the safety and the efficacy of flow diversion for distal anterior cerebral artery (DACA) aneurysms are limited. We present the largest multicenter analysis evaluating the outcomes of flow diversion in unruptured DACA aneurysm treatment.

Methods: Databases from 39 centers were retrospectively reviewed for unruptured DACA aneurysms treated with flow-diverting stents.

Article Synopsis
  • Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) has a high mortality rate, and current diagnostic methods like LI-RADS often lead to indeterminate results, complicating accurate diagnosis.
  • Researchers developed four deep learning models using CT scans, finding that the Spatio-Temporal 3D Convolution Network (ST3DCN) performed best, significantly outperforming standard radiological interpretation in identifying HCC.
  • The ST3DCN model demonstrated strong diagnostic accuracy in both internal validation (AUCs up to 0.919) and external testing (AUC of 0.901), indicating its potential as an effective tool for HCC diagnosis.

Background: The optimal timing of initiating adjuvant temozolomide (TMZ) chemoradiotherapy after surgery in patients with glioblastoma is contentious. This study aimed to determine whether the timing of adjuvant treatment affects their overall survival (OS).

Methods: Consecutive adult patients with histologically-confirmed newly diagnosed glioblastoma treated with adjuvant TMZ chemoradiotherapy across all neurosurgical centers in Hong Kong between 2006 and 2020 were analyzed.

Post-transplant hyperparathyroidism (PT-HPT) is common in kidney transplant recipients (KTRs) and can cause nephrocalcinosis and graft dysfunction. Cinacalcet is commonly used for treating PT-HPT but may induce calciuria and exacerbate nephrocalcinosis. The concurrent use of bisphosphonates with cinacalcet to prevent this complication has not been reported.

Aims/hypothesis: Type 2 diabetes is a complex and heterogeneous disease and the aetiological components underlying the heterogeneity remain unclear in the Chinese and East Asian population. Therefore, we aimed to investigate whether specific pathophysiological pathways drive the clinical heterogeneity in type 2 diabetes.

Methods: We employed newly developed type 2 diabetes hard-clustering and soft-clustering pathway-specific polygenic risk scores (psPRSs) to characterise individual genetic susceptibility to pathophysiological pathways implicated in type 2 diabetes in 18,217 Chinese patients from Hong Kong.

Detecting EGFR mutations in plasma using droplet digital PCR (ddPCR) assay offers a promising diagnostic tool for lung cancer patients. The performance of plasma-based ddPCR assay relative to traditional EGFR mutation testing in tissue biopsies among Asian patients with suspected lung cancer remains underexplored. Consecutive patients admitted for diagnostic workup for suspected lung cancer were recruited.

Objective: Not all women experience the same changes in depression from pregnancy through the years following childbirth, but the patterns of prenatal and postnatal depression are underexplored. This study investigated the trajectories and associated predictors of depressive symptoms in women from pregnancy through the first 3 years postpartum.

Method: We followed 340 pregnant women from an antenatal clinic in Hong Kong, first at 20-24 weeks of gestation, then at 4 weeks after childbirth, and again at 3 years after childbirth.

Background: Caregiver stress can pose serious health and psychological concerns, highlighting the importance of timely interventions for family caregivers of people with dementia. Single-session mindfulness-based interventions could be a promising yet under-researched approach to enhancing their mental well-being within their unpredictable, time-constrained contexts. This trial will evaluate the effectiveness and feasibility of a blended mindfulness-based intervention consisting of a single session and app-based follow-up in reducing caregiver stress.

Importance: Previous studies showed that 42% to 50% of patients with locally advanced hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) achieved complete remission (CR) after combined locoregional therapy (LRT) plus immunotherapy (IO). However, data on predictors of CR and long-term clinical outcomes without surgery and after discontinuation of IO are lacking.

Objective: To assess the long-term clinical outcomes among patients with unresectable HCC who achieved CR after LRT-IO and were placed on a watch-and-wait protocol.

Time Pattern of Presentation of Victims of High-Speed Passenger Ferry Mass Casualty Incidents to the Emergency Department.

Disaster Med Public Health Prep

September 2024

Accident and Emergency Department, Kwong Wah Hospital, Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, China.

Article Synopsis
  • The study examined mass casualty incidents involving high-speed passenger ferries in Hong Kong from 2005 to 2015, focusing on victim arrival patterns in emergency departments.
  • It found that seriously injured victims (Injury Severity Score ≥ 9) arrived at emergency departments faster than those with minor injuries, influenced by factors such as evacuation methods and distance to medical facilities.
  • The research concluded that the expected dual-wave phenomenon (initial minor injuries followed by severe cases) did not occur, emphasizing the importance of effective communication for timely resource allocation in emergencies.
