This was achieved by understanding the relationship between amino acid sequence, three-dimensional structure, physicochemical properties, and physiological function. Previous molecular phylogenies of chordate globin genes revealed the monophyletic evolution of urochordate globins and suggested convergent evolution.

The plastid terminal oxidase PTOX controls the oxidation level of the plastoquinone pool in the thylakoid membrane and acts as a safety valve upon abiotic stress, but detailed characterization of its role in protecting the photosynthetic apparatus is limited. Here we used PTOX mutants in two model plants Arabidopsis thaliana and Marchantia polymorpha. In Arabidopsis, lack of PTOX leads to a severe defect in pigmentation, a so-called variegated phenotype, when plants are grown at standard light intensities.

Aims: The aim of the present study is to gain insight into the biology of Parkinson's disease (PD) and cancer to drive translational advances enabling more effective prevention and/or potential treatments.
Background: The expression of Cytochrome P450 2D6 (CYP2D6) is correlated with various diseases such as PD and cancer; therefore, exploring its regulatory mechanism at transcriptional levels is of interest. NF-E2-related factor 2 (Nrf2) has been known to be responsible for regulating phase II and phase III drug-metabolizing genes.

Previous studies reported that an object in one's peripersonal space (PPS) attracts attention and facilitates subsequent processing of stimuli. Recent studies showed that visual stimuli approaching the body facilitated the spatial prediction of subsequent tactile events, even if these stimuli were task-irrelevant. However, it is unclear whether the approach is important for facilitating this prediction or if the simple existence of stimuli within the PPS is what matters.

Dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) have been one of the most promising technologies to convert sunlight into electricity repeatedly based on the mechanism that dyes inject/accept electron into the metal oxides/from redox mediator. Specifically, N719 ([RuL(NCS)], L: 4,4'-dicarboxy-2,2'-bipyridine), immobilized on TiO through the interaction between its ligands (-COO and -NCS) and the oxygen on the TiO surface, has been used as a conventional DSSC dye with high voltage. Nevertheless, -NCS ligands have been removed from Ru in N719 due to UV irradiation and exchanged with HO or OH in electrolyte, resulting in voltage drop.

Herein we report a copper-catalyzed synthesis of imidazolidine by employing the reaction of aziridine with imine. The reaction smoothly provided a diverse range of 2-substituted imidazolidines with high compatibility with various functional groups. Moreover, during our investigation, we discovered that isocyanate also reacted with aziridine to yield substituted imidazolidinones efficiently.

Although pregnant women's fish consumption is beneficial for the brain development of the fetus due to the DHA in fish, seafood also contains methylmercury (MeHg), which adversely affects fetal brain development. Epidemiological studies suggest that high DHA levels in pregnant women's sera may protect the fetal brain from MeHg-induced neurotoxicity, but the underlying mechanism is unknown. Our earlier study revealed that DHA and its metabolite 19,20-dihydroxydocosapentaenoic acid (19,20-DHDP) produced by cytochrome P450s (P450s) and soluble epoxide hydrolase (sEH) can suppress MeHg-induced cytotoxicity in mouse primary neuronal cells.

Retroviral replicating vectors (RRVs) selectively replicate and can specifically introduce prodrug-activating genes into tumor cells, whereby subsequent prodrug administration induces the death of the infected tumor cells. We assessed the ability of two distinct RRVs generated from amphotropic murine leukemia virus (AMLV) and gibbon ape leukemia virus (GALV), which infect cells via type-III sodium-dependent phosphate transporters, PiT-2 and PiT-1, respectively, to infect human gastric cancer (GC) cells. A quantitative RT-PCR showed that all tested GC cell lines had higher expression levels of PiT-2 than PiT-1.

A solid-state method was developed for generating diarylisonaphthofurans from 1,3-diaryl-1,3-dihydronaphthofuranols. The generated reactive molecules were stable in the solid state and could be stored without any extra precautions. X-ray diffraction analysis revealed a typical quinoidal structure.

Objective: This study aimed to deliver a polypeptide from the Bax-BH3 domain (BHP) through the synthesis of self-assembled amphiphile nanovectors (NVs) and to assess their potential for cancer therapeutic applications and biological safety in vitro and in vivo. These findings provide valuable options for cancer intervention and a novel approach for the rational design of therapeutics.
Methods: We studied the antitumor activity of BHP by preparing RGDfK-PHPMA-b-Poly (MMA--(Rhob-MA)) (RPPMMRA) and encapsulating it in BHP-NV.

Recombinase polymerase amplification (RPA) is an isothermal DNA amplification reaction at around 41°C using recombinase (Rec), single-stranded DNA-binding protein (SSB), strand-displacing DNA polymerase (Pol), and an ATP-regenerating enzyme. In this study, we attempted to use pyruvate kinase instead of creatine kinase (CK) that has been consistently used as an ATP-regenerating enzyme in RPA. α-Aminoalkylation of sulfonylarenes with alkylamines was found to be induced by photoirradiation. Here various types of alkylamines, such as trialkylamines, dialkylamines, N,N-dialkylanilines and N-alkylanilines as well as sulfonylarenes containing an azole, azine, heterole or benzene ring are available. The reaction proceeds through a homolytic aromatic substitution (HAS) process consisting of addition of an α-aminoalkyl radical to a sulfonylarene and elimination of the sulfonyl radical to give the α-arylalkylamine, where photoirradiation is considered to induce homolysis of sulfonylarenes leading to the generation of α-aminoalkyl radicals that make a radical chain operative.

Marine diatoms are responsible for up to 20% of the annual global primary production by performing photosynthesis in seawater where CO2 availability is limited while HCO3- is abundant. Our previous studies have demonstrated that solute carrier 4 proteins at the plasma membrane of the diatom Phaeodactylum tricornutum facilitate the use of the abundant seawater HCO3-. There has been an unconcluded debate as to whether such HCO3- use capacity may itself supply enough dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) to saturate the enzyme Rubisco.

Utilizing X-ray reflectivity and infrared reflection absorption spectroscopy (IR-RAS), we have investigated the thermal expansion and contraction of ultrathin polyvinylphenol (PVPh) films supported on a silicon (100) substrate capped with an amorphous SiO layer. Despite being known to form strong interactions with the SiO surface, the thin PVPh films showed a reduction in the glass-transition point , similar to the behavior of polystyrene thin films deposited on SiO. We explored the relationship between thermal expansivity and film thickness using well-annealed films and found that it decreases with film thickness in the range below twice the radius of gyration of a polymer chain (2) in the glassy state.

Controlled self-assembly of Pt complexes is key to the development of optical and stimuli-responsive materials, but designing and precisely controlling them is still difficult owing to weak intermolecular interactions. Herein, we report the successful water-vapor-induced assembly of an anionic Pt complex [Pt(CN) (ppy)] (Hppy=2-phenylpyridine) electrostatically loaded onto cationically charged layered double hydroxide (LDH) nanoparticles consisting of Mg and Al ions. When the Pt complexes were densely loaded onto the LDH nanoparticles, the assembly was maintained, even in dilute aqueous media.
