Ample evidence demonstrates that α-synuclein (α-syn) has a critical role in the pathogenesis of Parkinson's disease (PD) with evidence indicating that its propagation from one area of the brain to others may be the primary mechanism for disease progression. Uric acid (UA), a natural antioxidant, has been proposed as a potential disease modifying candidate in PD. In the present study, we investigated whether UA treatment modulates cell-to-cell transmission of extracellular α-syn and protects dopaminergic neurons in the α-syn-enriched model.

Article Synopsis
  • Bivalent COVID-19 vaccines targeting Omicron subvariants BA.1 and BA.4/BA.5 were studied to evaluate their effectiveness in producing neutralizing antibodies (Nabs) after vaccination.
  • The study involved 21 participants and found that those previously infected with BA.1/BA.2 or BA.5 had significantly higher levels of Nabs compared to non-infected individuals following the booster shot.
  • Both bivalent vaccine formulations demonstrated similar immunogenicity, but even with the booster, the neutralizing activity against newer Omicron strains (BQ.1.1, BN.1, and XBB.1) was still deemed insufficient for adequate protection.

Article Synopsis
  • Myopic choroidal neovascularization (mCNV) is a major cause of vision loss in pathological myopia, making visual prognosis prediction difficult.
  • A study developed two AI models to predict visual acuity (VA) in 279 patients with mCNV, using horizontal/vertical OCT images and multiple-volume scans, achieving high accuracy in predictions over 1 to 3 years.
  • The findings suggest that incorporating OCT images and baseline VA data significantly improves prediction performance, which could help in assessing treatment outcomes for mCNV patients receiving anti-VEGF therapy.
