In this study, we present in vitro actions of pure commercial preparations of oxidized and/or dehydrated metabolites of cholesterol (OS) identified in the lipid fraction of Fraction B (FB) prepared from a catfish skin preparation on calcium transients and on the formation of human neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs). These investigations are part of an ongoing effort to understand the important roles these compounds play as components of FB when FB is applied to accelerate the healing of wounds and the healing of highly infected non-healing diabetic foot ulcers, without the use of antibiotics. Our aim was to determine potential therapeutic interventions for various disease states.

Fracture Resistance of Posterior Milled Nanoceramic Crowns after Thermomechanical Aging.

J Funct Biomater

June 2024

Department of Restorative Sciences (Prosthodontics), College of Dentistry, Kuwait University, Kuwait P.O. Box 24923, Kuwait.

Fracture resistance is an important parameter used to predict the performance of indirect dental restorations. The purpose of this in vitro study was to assess the fracture load of posterior milled nanoceramic crowns, in comparison with the lithium disilicate crowns, after fatigue loading, for two different restoration occlusal thicknesses. Forty test metal dies were fabricated by duplicating a master metal model consisting of an anatomic abutment preparation of the maxillary first premolar for a single crown.

Clin Neurophysiol Pract

June 2024

Kuwait University, Faculty of Allied Health Sciences - Physical Therapy Department, Health Science Centre, Jabriyah, Kuwait.

H-reflex recordings of the relaxed flexor carpi ulnaris (FCU) muscle are not frequently performed in clinical or laboratory settings. There are no normative values or reliability standards. This is most likely because of technical difficulties associated with this technique.

This study investigates the evolving landscape of nursing informatics by conducting a follow-up survey initiated by the International Medical Informatics Association (IMIA) Students and Emerging Professionals (SEP) Nursing Informatics (NI) group in 2015 and 2019. The participants were asked to describe what they thought should be done in their institutions and countries to advance nursing informatics in the next 5-10 years. For this paper, responses in English acquired by December 2023 were analysed using inductive content analysis.

Association of psoriasis with allergic multimorbidity of asthma, rhinitis, and eczema among adolescents: a cross-sectional study.

Allergy Asthma Clin Immunol

July 2024

Division of Epidemiology, Biostatistics and Environmental Health, School of Public Health, University of Memphis, Memphis, TN, USA.

Background: Associations between psoriasis and allergic diseases (asthma, rhinitis, and eczema) in children have been reported in a limited number of studies, and the association between psoriasis and multimorbidity (co-occurrence) of allergic diseases remains unclear. Hence, this study aimed to assess the association between psoriasis and the co-occurrence of asthma, rhinitis, and eczema in adolescents.

Methods: This school-based cross-sectional study enrolled adolescents (n = 3,864) aged 11-14 years.

Objectives: Bariatric surgery is a well-established treatment for obesity and type 2 diabetes. Tirzepatide, a dual GIP/GLP-1 receptor agonist, has emerged as a promising therapy for type 2 diabetes. This study aimed to compare the effects of bariatric surgery, semaglutide (a GLP-1 receptor agonist), and tirzepatide in Sprague-Dawley rats fed a high-fat diet.

Vasoconstrictor Effects of Trace Amine-Associated Receptor Agonists in the Isolated Perfused Rat Kidney.

Med Princ Pract

December 2024

Department of Pharmacology and Toxicology, College of Medicine, Kuwait University, Kuwait City, Kuwait.

Introduction: Endogenous trace amines such as tryptamine and 3-iodothyronamine (T1AM) are present in mammalian tissues at very low concentrations. They produce their actions by activating surface G protein-coupled receptors known as trace amine-associated receptors (TAARs).

Objective: The study was designed to investigate the possible vasoconstrictor effects of tryptamine, T1AM, and the selective TAAR1 agonist RO5263397 in isolated perfused rat kidney.

Climate change mitigation necessitates increased investment in green sectors. This study proposes a methodology to predict green finance growth across various countries, aiming to encourage such investments. Our approach leverages time-series Conditional Generative Adversarial Networks (CT-GANs) for data augmentation and Nonlinear Autoregressive Neural Networks (NARNNs) for prediction.

Previous studies showed that preeclampsia (PE) amplifies cardiovascular dysfunction induced by endotoxemia in adult male, but not female, offspring. Here, we asked if such aggravated endotoxic insult could be nullified by modulators of the renin-angiotensin system (RAS). PE was induced by gestational administration of N-nitro-L-arginine methyl ester(L-NAME, a nitric oxide synthase inhibitor).

Article Synopsis
  • Crohn's disease (CD) is a chronic inflammatory bowel disease that requires a multidisciplinary management approach, particularly when dealing with fistulizing CD which poses significant treatment challenges.
  • The review discusses the different manifestations, impact on quality of life, and current management strategies for fistulizing CD, highlighting both traditional therapies and cutting-edge treatments being researched.
  • Antibiotics and biologics like infliximab are common initial treatments, but many patients develop resistance, leading to alternative therapies such as adalimumab, novel small-molecule drugs, and stem cell therapies, alongside surgical options for more complex cases.

Primary ciliary dyskinesia (PCD) is caused by the dysfunction of motile cilia resulting in insufficient mucociliary clearance of the lungs. This study aimed to map novel PCD variants and determine their pathogenicity in PCD patients in Kuwait. Herein, we present five PCD individuals belonging to a cohort of 105 PCD individuals recruited from different hospitals in Kuwait.

Attenuated total reflectance (ATR) Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy has been pursued as a novel approach to detect and differentiate biological materials with high specificity owing to its ability to record unique spectral patterns corresponding to the biochemical composition of a specimen. This study expands the application of ATR-FTIR for detecting oral fluid (OF) stains on various common substrates, including four porous and six nonporous substrates. For nonporous substrates, the spectral contribution from the substrate was minimal, and no background subtraction from the substrate bands was required (except for mirrors).

Drought is an inevitable environmental stress that drastically hampers the growth, productivity, and quality of food crops. Exogenous sodium nitroprusside and spermidine have decisive functions in the growth enhancement of plants; nevertheless, their specific role in mediating stress responses to improve drought tolerance in sunflowers at the reproductive stage (terminal drought) remains largely unknown. In the present study, we explored the positive effects of sodium nitroprusside and spermidine on physiological responses to increase in sunflower yield during periods of terminal drought.

Herein, we introduce an innovative nanohybrid material for advanced wastewater treatment, composed of -derived biochar and bismuth oxychloride (Biochar/BiOC), demonstrated in a solar photoreactor. This work focuses on the efficient degradation of linezolid (LIN), a persistent pharmaceutical pollutant, utilizing the unique (photo)catalytic capabilities of the nanohybrid. Compared with its individual components, the biochar/BiOC hybrid exhibits a remarkable degradation efficiency of 82.

Article Synopsis
  • Cutaneous larva migrans (CLM) is a skin condition caused by hookworm larvae from contaminated soil, leading to itchy, wavy tracks on the skin.
  • Two patients, a 42-year-old man and a 38-year-old man, treated with a combination of albendazole and ivermectin saw their symptoms resolve completely within a week.
  • The study emphasizes the effectiveness of this treatment approach for CLM and suggests further research is needed due to potential resistance to other antihelminthic therapies.
