This study examines the use of computer-aided analysis to evaluate the biomechanical performance of Schanz screws made from different additive manufacturing materials (Ti6Al4V, 316 L, Inconel 625, and Inconel 718) in a pertrochanteric fixator for the treatment of intertrochanteric femoral fractures. Intertrochanteric fractures (ITFs) are severe traumas often seen in the elderly population and can lead to serious consequences. The primary objective of ITF surgery is to provide stability and allow for early ambulation and rehabilitation.

In this study, antimicrobial nanofibers were produced with the mixtures of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and cyclotide-rich fractions by electrospinning method. After extraction, the first separation was carried out with C18 flash chromatography and then fractioned into five separate parts by reversed-phase high-pressure liquid chromatography (RP-HPLC). The molecular weights of cyclotides in each fraction were determined by quadrupole time-of-flight liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (Q-TOF LC-MS).

Article Synopsis
  • Bird strikes are a significant risk in the aviation industry, affecting airline insurance costs unevenly across different US states based on their frequency and seasonal patterns.
  • The study identifies a gap in understanding the principal-agent problem within aviation insurance and analyzes how bird strikes influence insurance costs in various regions using QGIS for spatial mapping.
  • Findings indicate that avoiding extra bird-strike premiums in 21 states with lower strike rates enhances efficiency, while incurring higher premiums in 29 states leads to greater cost-effectiveness, underscoring the need for tailored insurance strategies based on regional data.

Archaeological and historical sites, including World Heritage Sites, archaeological sites, castles, fortresses, towers, bridges, necropolises, and ruins, which are a shared legacy of humanity, are at risk of inundation due to sea level rise resulting from global climate change and increased carbon emissions, much like settlements, transportation systems, agricultural areas, and animal habitats. These locations are significant hot spots for connecting the past to the present regarding human history. Throughout history, settlements have been established around wetlands and shorelines.

Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering, Simav Technology Faculty, Kutahya Dumlupinar University, 43500, Kutahya, Turkey.

This article explores the detection of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, a neurobehavioral disorder, from electroencephalography signals. Due to the unstable behavior of electroencephalography signals caused by complex neuronal activity in the brain, frequency analysis methods are required to extract the hidden patterns. In this study, the feature extraction was performed with the Multitaper and Multivariate Variational Mode Decomposition methods.

Background: As we live in the era of technology, it is clear that employees' technical skills and savviness are important to their work performance. With the COVID-19 pandemic, these qualities have become a "necessity‿ for many employees as they have switched to remote working. Less attention, however, has been given to empirical evidence regarding how employees' technological competencies influence their work outcomes during a forced shift to remote work.

A simple, inexpensive, rapid, and label-free detection of phenylarsine oxide (PAO) in the field is a significant and unmet need because of its fatally acute and chronic effects on human health. A simple, fast, sensitive, and relatively low-cost arsenic detection system with an eco-friendly sensor could fill this gap. To monitor arsenic in situ, a reliable, portable impedimetric electrochemical sensor is the most suitable platform, which is real-time, fast, low-cost, and easy to design and use and has high sensitivity at low detection limits in the nanogram per mL range.

Article Synopsis
  • A study focused on how manganese (Mn(II)) and copper (Cu(II)) ions affect the thermophilic bacterium Bacillus cereus (B. cereus) SO-16, particularly looking at bioaccumulation, toxicity, and enzyme response.
  • Results indicated that Cu(II) was more toxic than Mn(II) and that B. cereus SO-16 had lower tolerance to both ions in liquid compared to solid media.
  • The bacterium showed significant metal uptake, with the highest bioaccumulation values recorded after 24 to 36 hours, suggesting it could be effective for cleaning up toxic metals in industrial wastewater.

Carbon supported Pd based catalysts for the hydrolytic dehydrogeneration of morpholine borane.

Chemosphere

December 2022

Sen Research Group, Department of Biochemistry, Kutahya Dumlupinar University, 43000, Kutahya, Türkiye. Electronic address:

Although the reducing property of morpholine borane is frequently used, there are few studies on its use as a chemical hydrogen storage material. This study presents the catalyst efficiency for hydrogen production in the dehydrogenation reaction of morpholine borane as efficient and cost-effective hydrogen storage material, which can be used as an alternative to depleting fossil fuels. It was studied with four different catalysts as activated Carbon-supported Pd, PdAg, PdNi, and PdCo.

Endocrine disruptive compounds are natural or anthropogenic environmental micropollutants that alter the function of the endocrine system ultimately damaging the metabolism. Bisphenol A (BPA) is the most common of these pollutants and it is often used in epoxy coatings and polycarbonates as a plasticizer. Therefore, monitoring BPA levels in different environments is very important and challenging.

Naturally occurring frog skin peptides are one of largest sources of antimicrobial peptides that have many advantages including high potency, broad spectrum of targets and low susceptibility to multiple drug-resistance bacteria. However, they also have disadvantages such as hemolytic activity, low stability and high production costs. For these reasons, various strategies have been applied to overcome these drawbacks restricting their use in clinical trials.

Objectives: Self-colored dental zirconia blocks eliminate the drawbacks of the coloring process of traditional blocks and ensure disposal time and cost in dental prosthesis laboratories. Like traditional dental zirconia frameworks, self-colored dental zirconia frameworks are produced by grinding pre-sintered zirconia blocks via manual or CAD/CAM operating devices. The process parameters such as powder type, pre-sintering temperature and doping amount of coloring powder affect the machining performance of blocks through microhardness, bulk density and shrinkage values (diameter and thickness) during fabrication.

Background: Royal jelly (RJ) is a unique beehive product and has been recommended for human health since ancient times because of its antioxidant, antimicrobial, antiproliferative, neuroprotective, anti-lipidemic and anti-aging features. However, the biggest obstacle in the use of RJ is the need for cold storage and the instability of bioactive components over time. In the present study, 10-hydroxy-2-decenoic acid (10-HDA) content, as well as antioxidant [using 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazy and 2,2'-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzthiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) methods] and antimicrobial activity (five Gram-positive, five Gram-negative and three yeasts), were comparatively evaluated for three RJ forms, two of which can be stored at 24 ± 1 °C during storage.
