Fragmented QRS (fQRS) on a 12-lead electrocardiogram is a known marker of fatal arrhythmias or cardiac adverse events in ischemic and non-ischemic cardiomyopathy patients. Nonetheless, the association between fQRS and clinical outcomes in patients with cardiac sarcoidosis (CS) remains unclear. Herein, we investigated whether fQRS is associated with long-term clinical outcomes in CS patients.

Background: A shortage of donor organs amid high demand for transplantable organs is a worldwide problem, and an increase in organ donation would be welcomed by the global healthcare system. Patients with brain death (BD) are potential organ donors, and early prediction of patients with BD may facilitate the process of organ procurement. Therefore, we developed a model for the early prediction of BD in patients who survived the initial phase of out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA).

Objective: We investigated the factors associated with cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) flow artifacts on fluid-attenuated inversion recovery imaging in patients with carotid artery (CA) stenosis.
Methods: Each CSF artifact grade was defined by comparing the highest intensity in a given region of interest (ROI) to those in reference ROIs, as follows: higher than the intensity of normal white matter in the centrum semiovale = 2 points; equal to or less than the white matter, and higher than CSF = 1 point; and equal to CSF = 0. CSF flow scores in eight sites were measured and added to the total score (0 -16).

Background: Human papillomavirus (HPV) testing using self-collected vaginal samples and urine samples is convenient and effective for improving the screening rate. But, to serve as an alternative cervical cancer screening technique, such tests must offer sensitivity equivalent to the HPV testing of physician-collected cervical samples. To examine the effectiveness of HPV testing using self-collected samples and urine samples, we compared the results of HPV testing using these samples with those of HPV testing using physician-collected samples and cytological examinations.

The development of three-dimensional printers has facilitated the creation of patient-specific hollow vessel models. Preoperative simulations using these types of models have improved our ability to select appropriate devices and embolic materials before performing complex endovascular procedures. This report describes 2 cases of high-flow renal arteriovenous fistulas (r-AVFs) that were successfully treated via short-segment embolization using the preloading coil-in-plug (p-CIP) technique.

Background: Pulmonary hemorrhage is a life-threatening complication of cardiovascular surgery. Bronchial artery hypertrophy, a rare pathology associated with inflammatory and ischemic respiratory diseases, increases the risk of pulmonary hemorrhage; however, its involvement in cardiovascular surgery is not well known. We present two cardiovascular surgical cases in which embolization of the hypertrophied bronchial artery was effective in controlling perioperative pulmonary hemorrhage.

Prophylactic elective neck dissection (ND) with navigation surgery using radioisotope-based sentinel lymph node biopsy (SLNB) is non-inferior to elective ND in terms of survival but has an advantage in postoperative functional disability. We conducted a subgroup analysis to identify predictive factors for false-negative (FN)-SLNB in patients with early oral cavity cancer. This study is a supplementary analysis using the dataset of a previously reported randomized clinical trial on SLN navigation surgery for oral cancers.

It is not clear whether pembrolizumab monotherapy (MONO) or pembrolizumab plus platinum-based chemotherapy (COMB) should be selected for patients with advanced non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC) exhibiting high PD-L1 expression (tumor proportion score ≥ 50%). We performed a retrospective, multicenter study of 300 patients with NSCLC exhibiting high PD-L1 expression who received MONO or COMB as first-line treatment between December 2018 and January 2020. We reviewed the medical records of all consecutive patients with no driver mutations, and assessed the patient characteristics, therapeutic regimens, treatment periods, and adverse events.

Hybrid repair of a thoracoabdominal aortic aneurysm comprising thoracic endovascular aortic repair and total renovisceral debranching is a feasible alternative to open repair, especially for high-risk patients. However, transperitoneal debranching is a relatively complicated procedure that requires deep dissection around vital abdominal organs. Therefore, we developed a new debranching technique called Chunnel debranching, which was characterized by transaortic tunneling using a covered stent between the target artery and the prosthetic graft anastomosed on the aneurysmal wall using an inclusion technique.

Objective: This study aimed to investigate the risk factors and asymptomatic cerebrovascular diseases associated with elongated internal carotid arteries (ICAs) and the relationship between ICA elongation and severe carotid artery (CA) stenosis.
Methods: We evaluated risk factors for stroke and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) findings in patients with severe CA stenosis compared with people without neurological disorders who underwent brain screening (controls). On magnetic resonance angiography (MRA) images, we measured the longest distance, defined as the ICA distance, from the most distant anterior wall of the cervical ICA at the site of bending or kinking to the line between the origin of the external CA and the anterior protrusion of the ICA near the petrosal bone.

Introduction: The epidemic of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) rapidly spread worldwide, and the various infection control measures have a significant influence on the spread of many infectious diseases. However, there have been no multicenter studies on how the number of hospitalized children with various infectious diseases changed before and after the outbreak of COVID-19 in Japan.
Methods: We conducted a multicenter, prospective survey for hospitalized pediatric patients in 18 hospitals in Hokkaido Prefecture, Japan, from July 2019 to February 2021.

Objective The change in serum lipid levels by direct-acting antiviral (DAA) treatment for chronic hepatitis C varies depending on the type of DAA. How the lipid level changes induced by glecaprevir-pibrentasvir (G/P) treatment contribute to the clinical outcome remains unclear. We conducted a prospective observational study to evaluate the effectiveness of G/P treatment and the lipid level changes.
