Background: Because it is unclear whether implantable cardioverter-defibrillators (ICDs) are equally effective in patients of all ages, we investigated the association of age with long-term clinical outcomes of patients who underwent ICD implantation.
Methods And Results: A total of 416 consecutive patients (mean age: 69 years) from 4 tertiary hospitals who underwent ICD implantation or were upgraded from an existing permanent pacemaker between January 2011 and November 2022 were enrolled and divided into 3 groups based on age: <65 years (n=158), 65-74 years (n=138), and ≥75 years (n=120). We compared the incidence of all-cause death and adverse cardiovascular events, including cardiac death, appropriate ICD therapy, and heart failure hospitalization.

Introduction: Proximal femoral fractures are critically associated with increased risk of mortality and secondary fractures. Identifying prognosis predictors related to sagittal imbalance that are known to have negative impact on fracture risk and mortality is crucial. This study aimed to explore the relationship between various sagittal imbalance parameters and the prognosis of proximal femoral fractures to identify the most important prognostic indicators.

Introduction: Compared to platinum-based therapies, a combination of ipilimumab (anti-CTLA-4) and nivolumab (anti-PD-1) has demonstrated improved outcomes in advanced non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC), albeit with higher rates of immune-related adverse events (irAEs). This multicenter retrospective study evaluated the efficacy and safety of nivolumab and ipilimumab with or without chemotherapy (NI and NICT) in real-world clinical settings.
Methods: We enrolled 215 treatment-naïve NSCLC patients who received NI or NICT between December 2020 and May 2023 at 14 institutions in Japan.

Background: The effects of low-dose carperitide on long-term clinical outcomes of patients with acute heart failure (AHF) have not yet been fully elucidated. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of low-dose intravenous carperitide on the long-term clinical outcomes of patients with AHF.
Methods: In this multicentre, open-label, randomised controlled trial, 247 patients with AHF received low-dose carperitide intravenously with standard treatment or a matching standard treatment for 72 h from November 2014 to March 2021 across nine sites in Japan.

Background: In the first-line treatment of elderly patients with advanced-stage non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) with high programmed death-ligand 1 (PD-L1) expression (tumor proportion score ≥ 50%), this study aimed to determine whether pembrolizumab monotherapy (MONO) or pembrolizumab plus platinum-based chemotherapy (COMB) should be selected.
Methods: We performed a retrospective multicenter study (sub-analysis of the HOT/NJLCG2001 trial) of 299 patients with NSCLC with high PD-L1 expression who received MONO or COMB as the first-line treatment between December 2018 and January 2020. We selected patients aged 75 years and older and assessed the clinical efficacy and toxicity.

A man in his 60s developed a pancreatic pseudocyst postoperatively after an open graft replacement for a ruptured abdominal aortic aneurysm. Endoscopic drainage was performed; however, this led to an aortic graft infection due to macroscopic communication with the perigraft cavity. Percutaneous drainage was performed to manage the pancreatic fistula and graft infection simultaneously.

Bimodal convolutional neural networks (CNNs) are frequently combined with patient information or several medical images to enhance the diagnostic performance. However, the technologies that integrate automatically generated clinical measurements within the images are scarce. Hence, we developed a bimodal model that produced automatic algorithm for clinical measurement (aaCM) from radiographic images and integrated the model with CNNs.

Human adenovirus (HAdV) infections present diverse clinical manifestations upon infecting individuals, with respiratory infections predominating in children. We surveyed pediatric hospitalizations due to respiratory HAdV infections across 18 hospitals in Hokkaido Prefecture, Japan, from July 2019 to March 2024, recording 473 admissions. While hospitalizations remained below five cases per week from July 2019 to September 2023, a notable surge occurred in late October 2023, with weekly admissions peaking at 15-20 cases from November to December.

Background: In patients with schizophrenia, violent behavior is a clinically important factor that prevents their discharge. Clozapine is an effective antipsychotic medication for treatment-resistant schizophrenia, and its usefulness for aggressive behavior has also been suggested.
Case Presentation: We present the case of a 38-year-old male patient diagnosed with schizophrenia who was successfully treated with clozapine after recurrent violent behavior.

Background: Cancer treatment for children is typically long-term and difficult, and the experience is unique for each child. When designing child-centred care, individuals' values and preferences are considered equally important as the clinical evidence; therefore, understanding children's thoughts and attitudes while they receive long-term treatment could offer valuable insights for better clinical practice.
Methods: We conducted long-term consecutive participatory observations and interviews with seven children, who were hospitalised and receiving cancer treatment for the first time.

A 75-year-old male with diabetes mellitus was referred to our hospital with an abnormal shadow on chest radiography, based on which he was diagnosed with extensive-disease small-cell lung cancer (ED-SCLC; cT2bN2M1a). The first-line therapy comprised atezolizumab, carboplatin, and etoposide. After four cycles, the patient achieved complete response (CR), and maintenance therapy was initiated with atezolizumab.

Introduction: We aimed to investigate secondary fracture and mortality rates, and risk factors in patients with proximal femoral fractures.
Materials And Methods: We conducted a multicenter prospective cohort study on female patients with proximal femoral fractures who underwent surgical treatment between April 2020 and March 2021. Postoperative follow-ups were performed at 6-, 12-, 18-, and 24-month intervals to determine the secondary fracture and mortality rates, and the risk factors and its influence were examined.
