Comprehensive treatment comprising neoadjuvant laparoscopic HIPEC (L-HIPEC) and bidirectional intraperitoneal and systemic induction chemotherapy (BISIC) followed by cytoreductive surgery (CRS) for gastric cancer with peritoneal carcinomatosis (PC) has been developed. However, its benefits and patient selection criteria have not been thoroughly investigated. We retrospectively reviewed 113 patients, with 25 having received comprehensive treatment (L-HIPEC, BISIC, and then CRS-HIPEC; the BISIC group) and 88 having received direct CRS-HIPEC (the CRS group).

Prostate cancer is the most common genitourinary cancer in men. Population-based serum prostate-specific antigen (PSA) testing is used to screen men for the early detection of asymptomatic prostate cancer. The present study compared the features of patients with prostate cancer in Kusatsu City, the only municipality in Shiga Prefecture of Japan to implement organized PSA screening, with those in other municipalities.

The treatment of patients with peritoneal metastasis from gastric cancer continues to evolve. With various forms of intraperitoneal drug delivery available, it is now possible to reach the sites of peritoneal metastases, which were otherwise sub-optimally covered by systemic chemotherapy, owing to the blood peritoneal barrier. We conducted a narrative review based on an extensive literature research, highlighting the current available intraperitoneal treatment options, which resulted in improved survival in well-selected patients of peritoneally metastasized gastric cancer.

An 80-year-old man was referred to our hospital because of epigastric pain. Abdominal computed tomography revealed a well-defined circular intra-abdominal mass in the gastro-pancreatic region measuring 15 mm in diameter. After 6 months, the mass lesion was growing with mild enhancement, and weaker enhancement was found in the lower half of the mass on contrast-enhanced computed tomography.

The objective of this study was to propose prognostic factors and optimal treatment strategies by analyzing the clinicopathological features and programmed death-ligand 1 (PD-L1) expression. We analyzed 31 patients diagnosed with uterine or ovarian melanoma between 1997 and 2017 in the Kansai Clinical Oncology Group/Intergroup. Twenty-four and seven patients with cervical and ovarian melanomas were included, respectively.

Pseudomyxoma peritonei (PMP) is the intraperitoneal accumulation of mucus due to a mucinous tumor. PMP predominantly occurs in low-grade carcinomas. The incidence rate of PMP is one to two cases per million people per year.

In the present article, we describe the normal structure of the peritoneum and review the mechanisms of peritoneal metastasis (PM) from gastric cancer (GC). The structure of the peritoneum was studied by a double-enzyme staining method using alkaline-phosphatase and 5'-nucreotidase, scanning electron microscopy, and immunohistological methods. The fundamental structure consists of three layers, mesothelial cells and a basement membrane (layer 1), macula cribriformis (MC) (layer 2), and submesothelial connective tissue containing blood vessels and initial lymphatic vessels, attached to holes in the MC (layer 3).

By mimicking the extracellular matrix, nonwoven fabrics can function as scaffolds for tissue engineering application ideally, and they have been characterized regarding their fiber diameter and fiber spacing (spacing size) in vitro. We chronologically examined the in vivo effects of these fabrics on the cellular response and tissue remodeling. Four types of nonwoven polyglycolic acid fabrics (Fabric-0.

Purpose: The aim of this study was to investigate the correlation between preoperative F-fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) uptake and histological subtypes, amount of tumor stroma in advanced gastric cancer (GC), and clinical outcomes.
Methods: We evaluated 56 patients (male/female, 42:14; mean age, 69 years) with advanced GC who underwent surgical resection at our institution and positron emission tomography-computed tomography with 18F-FDG prior to surgery. We used the maximum standardized uptake value (SUVmax) of the tumor and the tumor-to-liver ratio (TLR) of the SUVmax for the analysis.

Abnormal hypertrophic arachnoid membranes are often observed in the brain-meningioma interface during microsurgery. They contain fibrosis and tumor cell clusters; however, preservation of the membranes does not always cause recurrence from the brain surface, and the optimal treatments in the interface remain unclear. We investigated the incidence of recurrence on the brain surface following extra-arachnoid dissection with an approach emphasizing preservation of the arachnoid membranes in meningiomas of World Health Organization (WHO) Grade I.

Autophagy is an evolutionarily conserved, lysosome-dependent catabolic process whereby cytoplasmic components, including damaged organelles, protein aggregates and lipid droplets, are degraded and their components recycled. Autophagy has an essential role in maintaining cellular homeostasis in response to intracellular stress; however, the efficiency of autophagy declines with age and overnutrition can interfere with the autophagic process. Therefore, conditions such as sarcopenic obesity, insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) that are characterized by metabolic derangement and intracellular stresses (including oxidative stress, inflammation and endoplasmic reticulum stress) also involve the accumulation of damaged cellular components.

Background: In all the prefectures of Japan, with the exception of Shiga Prefecture, more than half of local governments have an organized prostate-specific antigen (PSA) screening system in place. However, in the Shiga Prefecture, only a single city performed PSA screening over the time period of this survey. The purpose of the present study was to determine the clinical, pathological, and therapeutic features of newly diagnosed prostate cancer in localities where a formally organized screening system was almost entirely absent.

After thoracic aortic replacement, extensive adhesions are expected to develop between the prosthesis and the lung. There have been no definitive reports on anatomical lung resection performed in patients with left lung cancer after thoracic aortic replacement. Herein, we report a series of five such cases.

Background: The chance of incidentally detecting brain tumors is increasing as the utilization of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) becomes more prevalent. In this background, knowledge is accumulating in relation to the prediction of their clinical sequence. However, their prevalence-especially the prevalence of glioma-has not been adequately investigated according to age, sex, and region.

Background: We conducted this study to review the patient characteristics associated with long-term survival in patients with peritoneal metastases from colorectal cancer who underwent cytoreductive surgery (CRS).
Methods: We retrospectively investigated patients with peritoneal metastases from CRC treated with curative intent surgery with or without hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy at 13 institutions worldwide between January 1985 and April 2015 and survived longer than five years after the first CRS for peritoneal metastases. Clinical and oncological features and therapeutic parameters were described and analyzed.

Vonoprazan is a potent inhibitor of gastric acid secretion and may have better response than proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) in the treatment of endoscopic submucosal dissection induced artificial ulcers. However, reported outcomes remain controversial. In this study, we conducted a prospective, randomized comparative trial to evaluate healing effects of vonoprazan and lansoprazole on endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD)-induced ulcers.

Background: Clinically, locoregional recurrences following mucinous tumor resection are often experienced. However, it remains unclear whether mucinous tumors directly affect local recurrence or not, and if so, the mechanism is not known. Therefore, we investigated whether mucinous tumors are associated with locoregional recurrence after pulmonary resection and whether mucus extension is a risk factor for locoregional recurrence.

This retrospective analysis investigated chemosensitivity testing of peritoneal metastases collected during cytoreductive surgery (CRS), and its impact on survival in patients with colorectal cancer.
Methods: All patients with peritoneal metastasis from colorectal cancer who underwent CRS with or without hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC) between November 2008 and October 2014 were included.
