Article Synopsis
  • NDRG1 is a protein linked to angiogenesis and was studied for its expression in endometrial endometrioid carcinoma (EEC) patients.
  • High levels of NDRG1 expression were associated with worse clinical outcomes, including advanced cancer stage, poor tumor differentiation, and lymph node metastasis.
  • The findings indicate that elevated NDRG1 expression signifies increased angiogenesis and poorer survival rates for women with EEC.

Lymph node recurrence is common in patients with breast cancer, and breast surgeons often diagnose it based solely on computed tomography (CT) or fluorine-18 fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography-computed tomography (FDG-PET/CT). In this case report, we present a patient with breast cancer having a false positive lymph node detected by FDG-PET/CT, which was later identified as a sarcoid reaction through thoracoscopic surgery. This pathological diagnosis allowed the patient to avoid unnecessary long-term cancer therapies, such as chemotherapy and hormone therapy.

Background: Some colorectal cancers (CRCs) are clinically diagnosed as cT4a with serosal invasion (SI). However, the cT4a is most often underdiagnosed pathologically as pT3 without SI by hematoxylin-eosin (H&E) staining alone. Using Elastica van Gieson (EVG) staining, some pT3 tumors invade the elastic lamina (EL), which extends just below the serosal layer.

bacteremia is associated with a high mortality rate, and meropenem (MEPM) is commonly used to treat it. However, the relationship between the time above the minimum inhibitory concentration (T) of MEPM and its therapeutic efficacy in bacteremia has not been explored. This study aimed to investigate this relationship by defining the target % T of MEPM as 75%.

Department of Diagnostic Pathology, Kurume University Hospital (C.F., J.A.); Department of Pathology, Kurume University School of Medicine (S.S., S.O., J.A., H.Y.); Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Kurume University School of Medicine (N.T.); Biostatistics Center, Kurume University (K.M.); Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Kurume General Hospital (K.U.), Kurume; and Clinical resident at Takagi Hospital, Okawa (M.A.), Fukuoka, Japan.

Well-differentiated endometrioid carcinoma (EC) is a low-grade cancer with relatively indolent behavior. However, even with well-differentiated histology, it sometimes tends to invade extensively and shows metastatic potential, suggesting that this is a group of cancers with heterogeneous behavior. In contrast, due to its tendency for younger onset, the treatment strategy for EC frequently considers fertility preservation, highlighting the need for a more accurate evaluation of myometrial invasion through biopsy and imaging diagnostics.

Do standardization of the procedure reduce measurement variability of the sonographic anterior drawer test of the ankle?

J Orthop Sci

November 2024

Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, Graduate School of Medical and Pharmaceutical Sciences, Chiba University, Chiba, Japan.

Article Synopsis
  • The study examined whether standardizing ankle stress sonography techniques would reduce measurement variability among different examiners.
  • Fourteen examiners with an average of 8.7 years of ultrasound experience used their preferred methods on three patients, followed by a standardized technique developed in a consensus meeting.
  • Results showed no significant difference in variability or measurement outcomes between the preferred and standardized techniques, indicating that standardization did not effectively reduce variability in ligament length measurements.
