November 2024

Department of Otolaringology, Head and Neck Surgery, Kayseri City Education and Training Hospital, Kayseri, Turkey.

Background And Aim: Tongue base reduction surgery is the only minimally invasive technique that can be performed under local anesthesia as an outpatient procedure, especially to treat obstructive sleep apnea caused by hypopharyngeal obstruction. Studies reported that various devices could be used for tongue base reduction, but comparisons of these methods are limited in the literature. Our study aimed to compare the histological effects of tongue base reduction methods performed with the Celon radiofrequency, monopolar cautery, Coblator, and Sutter devices on the tissue.

Background: Becker muscular dystrophy (BMD) is a dystrophinopathy caused by a pathological variant of the DMD gene. Urinary titin, a degradation product of the giant protein titin present in muscle sarcomeres, has been used as a biomarker to reflect muscle degradation in Duchenne muscular dystrophy, a more severe dystrophinopathy. However, the clinical significance of urinary titin levels in BMD remains unclear.

Despite advancements in understanding the structure and functions of the Calcium Sensing Receptor (CaSR), gaps persist in our knowledge of the specific functions of its residues. In this study, we used phylogeny-based techniques to identify functionally equivalent orthologs of CaSR, predict residue significance, and compute specificity-determining position (SDP) scores to understand its evolutionary basis. The analysis revealed exceptional conservation of the CaSR subfamily, emphasizing the critical role of residues with high SDP scores in receptor activation and pathogenicity.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study compares the diagnostic accuracy of radiomics feature maps to standard CT scans in detecting liver metastases in patients with metastatic colorectal cancer, revealing that CT scans generally outperformed radiomics for detecting the number of lesions.
  • - While standard CT images were superior overall for visual clarity and diagnostic confidence, the first-order RootMeanSquared feature maps demonstrated better visual contrast for liver lesions in a significant number of cases.
  • - The findings suggest that although traditional CT scans are more effective at highlighting liver lesions, the use of specific radiomics maps could aid in identifying poorly defined areas.

CTG repeat length underlying cardiac events and sudden death in myotonic dystrophy type 1.

Eur Heart J Open

September 2024

Department of Clinical Laboratory and Biomedical Sciences, Osaka University Graduate School of Medicine, 1-7 Yamadaoka, Suita, Osaka 565-0871, Japan.

Article Synopsis
  • Myotonic dystrophy Type 1 (DM1) is linked to the expansion of CTG repeats in the DMPK gene and may be associated with heart issues and sudden death, but this relationship is not fully understood in Japan and Europe.
  • A study analyzed 496 DM1 patients from nine Japanese hospitals, finding that those with 1300 or more CTG repeats had a significantly higher risk of serious cardiac events and mortality compared to those with fewer repeats.
  • The results suggest that patients with 1300 or longer CTG repeats are particularly at risk for cardiac complications and increased death rates, while the rate of sudden death was not significantly different across groups.

  • Tideglusib's impact on collagen expression in human dental pulp-derived stem cells (DPSCs) is explored, focusing on type 1 and type 3 collagen levels.
  • The study involved isolating DPSCs from wisdom teeth and treating them with Tideglusib, measuring changes in collagen and Axin-2 expression over time.
  • Results show that Tideglusib initially increased type 1 collagen and Axin-2 after 24 hours, but decreased both collagen types after one week, suggesting further research is needed on its effects on the extracellular matrix.

  • This study explored how parental mental health affects children's psychological issues and behavior in families impacted by the 2023 Kahramanmaraş earthquake in Türkiye.
  • It involved 358 preschoolers and their parents, revealing that higher parental psychological distress linked to more child difficulties and less prosocial behavior, with parenting quality playing a mediating role.
  • The results highlighted that fostering positive parenting could help protect children from the negative effects of parental distress, emphasizing the importance of supporting parent-child relationships after traumatic events.

Alternative health (AH) has an important role in public health across cultures, as the World Health Organization acknowledges. Using structural topic modeling, we analyzed 25,561 posts from public Facebook groups that contained AH-related content during the COVID-19 pandemic over 3 years. Thirty-one topics emerged, and they were categorized into six major themes, including (1) sharing information regarding AH treatment for COVID-19, (2) spiritual and mental healing in the pandemic, (3) news and information about COVID-19, (4) commercial content related to AH treatment, (5) COVID-19 precautions suggestions, and (6) caution against treating AH as a cure-all.

Objectives: In this study, the effects of sex and birth type on growth performance, withers height (WH), radiographic measurements and selected hormone profiles in Gurcu goat kids were investigated.

Methods: Twenty kids (single female = 5, single male = 5, twin female = 5, twin male = 5) were included in the study. Body weight (BW), WH, radiographic measurements (humerus length [HL], radius length [RL], proximal humerus epiphyseal plate width [HEP] and distal ulna epiphyseal plate width [UEP]) and biochemical analysis (for serum calcitonin, free triiodothyronine [FT3], free thyroxine [FT4], growth hormone [GH] and insulin-like growth factor-I [IGF-I]) were performed at 1, 3, 5, 7, 9 and 12 months of age.

  • The study examines if helical Tomotherapy (HT) during free breathing (FB) can be a viable treatment option for left-sided breast cancer patients who can't use the deep inspiration breath hold (DIBH) technique.
  • Using CT images from 20 patients, the researchers compared dosimetric outcomes between the HT-FB and VMAT-DIBH techniques, focusing on target coverage and the preservation of surrounding healthy tissues.
  • Results indicated that while both methods effectively covered the treatment target, HT-FB offered superior protection for the left lung and LAD, although it requires careful assessment of doses to the contralateral breast and lung.
