Background: Complex segmentectomy for uniportal video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS) remains controversial due to procedural complexity and the risk of increased complications, unlike multiportal VATS. Demonstrating the perioperative results and proficiency of individual surgeon is believed to influence future dissemination for uniportal VATS. In this study, we aimed to compare the perioperative outcomes and learning curves of complex versus simple segmentectomy for uniportal VATS.

In Japan, cotton is commonly used in thoracic surgery for the gentle handling of organs as well as obtaining a good surgical field. While uniportal video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery is being recognized as a major surgical approach, use of cotton is not noted in this technique. Uniportal video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery needs curved instruments because they are effective in preventing the interference of instruments.

Article Synopsis
  • Breakthrough infections (BI) post-COVID-19 vaccination have risen due to new SARS-CoV-2 variants, prompting a study on neutralizing antibodies in affected patients.
  • The study found that most patients had strong resistance (90% or more) against earlier virus strains like Wuhan, Alpha, and Delta, but little to no neutralizing activity against the Omicron BA.1 variant.
  • Importantly, even patients with sufficient antibodies can still experience breakthrough infections, emphasizing the need for continued precautions despite vaccination.

Acute benzyl alcohol intoxication: An autopsy case report.

Medicine (Baltimore)

March 2023

Department of Legal Medicine, Faculty of Medicine, University of Toyama, Toyama, Japan.

Article Synopsis
  • Benzyl alcohol intoxication's deadly effects and autopsy findings remain poorly understood, with no previous reports published on such cases.
  • A 24-year-old man died after experiencing cardiopulmonary arrest while working with paint stripping; his autopsy revealed severe tissue damage, particularly in the skin and respiratory tracts, and significant levels of benzyl alcohol in his blood.
  • The case suggests that acute benzyl alcohol exposure can rapidly harm the central nervous system, potentially leading to early death, rather than primarily affecting the kidneys.

Background: Severe neonatal hypoglycemia may cause irreversible neurological sequelae. Although blood glucose (BG) screening in term neonates without risk factors for hypoglycemia (non-risk neonates) is not recommended in the current guidelines, severe hypoglycemia can occur in such neonates. To evaluate the necessity of BG screening in non-risk neonates, it is important to determine the accurate incidence of severe hypoglycemia in those neonates.

Intraoperative methods for wrapping anastomoses after airway reconstruction: a case series.

Transl Lung Cancer Res

June 2022

Department of Thoracic Surgery and Oncology, the First Affiliated Hospital of Guangzhou Medical University, State Key Laboratory of Respiratory Disease, National Clinical Research Center for Respiratory Disease, Guangzhou Institute of Respiratory Health, Guangzhou, China.

Background: Anastomosis management is the main challenge of airway resection and reconstruction, and postoperative anastomotic complications, including ischemia, stenosis, dehiscence, and separation may lead to severe outcomes and a poor prognosis. The anastomotic buttress is vital in airway reconstruction, but the selection of surgical buttress and reinforcement remains controversial. We aimed to demonstrate and evaluate the buttress options of anastomosis, including their preoperative characteristics, the intraoperative process, and the incidence of postoperative complications to help address the controversy regarding anastomosis management.
