Background: Temporomandibular disorders (TMD) are multifactorial musculoskeletal pain and dysfunctions in temporomandibular joints (TMJs) and masticatory muscles. Genetic factors play a role in TMD-related pain, but only a few genome-wide association studies (GWAS) have been conducted.
Objective: The aim of this GWAS was to explore genetic factors associated with painful TMD in Finnish populations.

Promising initial studies on vitamin D (VD) supplementation as an adjunct treatment for major depressive disorder (MDD) require rigorously designed randomized controlled trials (RCTs). We aim to investigate the effects of augmenting standard MDD treatment with VD supplementation and examine factors influencing the treatment outcome. This article describes the study design, measures, and baseline characteristics.

Numerous studies have shown that a healthy reproductive tract microbiota is crucial for successful reproduction and that its composition is influenced by various environmental and host factors. However, it is not known whether the reproductive microbiota is also shaped by the major histocompatibility complex (MHC), a family of genes essential to differentiate 'self' from 'non-self' peptides to initiate an adaptive immune response. We tested the association between the follicular fluid microbiome and MHC genes in 27 women.

Aims: Obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) imposes significant stress on the cardiovascular system and the heart. While long-term cardiac effects are understood, the immediate impact of hypoxaemia on the heart's electrophysiology lacks understanding. Our study aims to explore desaturation severity on cardiovascular repolarisation.

Background: Dementia preventive interventions targeting multiple modifiable risk factors are a promising approach. However, the impact of modifiable risk factors in the presence of beta-amyloid or phosphorylated-tau (p-tau) pathology is unclear.
Methods: The objective of the study was to examine the role of modifiable risk factors (vascular factors, depression, and smoking) in the progression to mild cognitive impairment (MCI) or dementia among 434 cognitively unimpaired (CU) and 611 individuals with MCI from the Alzheimer's Disease Neuroimaging Initiative (ADNI) database.

Objective: The study aimed to calculate the subsequent birth rate for different delivery modes, comparing them with spontaneous vaginal deliveries, using a comprehensive nationwide high-quality registry.
Methods: Data from the National Medical Birth Register (MBR) were used to evaluate the birth rate after different delivery modes. All first deliveries for a mother during the years 2004 to 2016 were included.

Evidence is accumulating on the connection of early adversities and harsh family environment with epigenetic ageing. We investigated whether early psychosocial resilience is associated with epigenetic ageing in adulthood. We used the population-based Young Finns data (n = 1593).

Background/objectives: Obesity impairs intestinal glucose uptake (GU) (intestinal uptake of circulating glucose from blood) and alters gut microbiome. Exercise improves intestinal insulin-stimulated GU and alters microbiome. Genetics influence the risk of obesity and gut microbiome.

Digitalization in healthcare education has shifted simulation learning methods to distanced implementations. Successful transition to distance education requires effective communication and the teacher's good ability to use digital learning methods, as well as students' active interaction and motivation throughout the entire educational process. This study explores participants' experiences of online large group simulations as an approach for learning about interprofessional collaboration.

State-of-the-art automatic sleep staging methods have demonstrated comparable reliability and superior time efficiency to manual sleep staging. However, fully automatic black-box solutions are difficult to adapt into clinical workflow due to the lack of transparency in decision-making processes. Transparency would be crucial for interaction between automatic methods and the work of sleep experts, i.

Diurnal preference to eveningness might predispose to depression. There is preliminary evidence of infrared-A (IR-A) induced whole-body hyperthermia (WBH) in the treatment of depression. In this exploratory study with 19 adults, we investigated the effects of a 20-min exposure of water-filtered IR-A (wIRA) to the skin of back and buttock area, without inducing WBH, on mood and assessed the outcome by diurnal preference (#R19047, approval on 7 May 2019).

Background And Objective: For neonates and infants receiving intermittent vancomycin infusions, the area under the concentration-time curve during 24 h (AUC24) is often estimated with Bayesian forecasting using one or more measured vancomycin concentrations. When practical peak and trough concentrations are measured at steady state, AUC24 can also be calculated with first-order steady-state equations for a one-compartment model (Sawchuk-Zaske method), but previously this method has been applied only for adults. The objective of this study was to compare AUC24 values obtained with the Sawchuk-Zaske method and two Bayesian models.

There is a dire need for the establishment of active dengue surveillance to continuously detect cases, circulating serotypes, and determine the disease burden of dengue fever (DF) in the country and region. Predicting dengue PCR results using machine learning (ML) models represents a significant advancement in pre-emptive healthcare measures. This study outlines the comprehensive process of data preprocessing, model selection, and the underlying mechanisms of each algorithm employed to accurately predict dengue PCR outcomes.

Objective: This study aimed to assess whether exposure to hyperglycemia influences prescription medicine purchases in the offspring of women with type 1 diabetes (exposed offspring).
Patients/materials And Methods: We identified all singleton exposed offspring born in the hospital district of Helsinki and Uusimaa, Finland, between 1988 and 2011 from the Finnish Medical Birth Register, maintained by the Finnish Institute for Health and Welfare. For each exposed offspring, we obtained five age- and province-matched offspring of women without diabetes (reference offspring), from the Finnish Medical Birth Register.

Background & Aims: A new nomenclature and subclassification for steatotic liver disease (SLD) was recently introduced. We validated the prognostic value of SLD subclasses in a Finnish population-based cohort and explored the impact of metabolic risk factors and alcohol consumption on liver-related outcomes and death.
Methods: The study included 23,910 individuals (47% men, mean age 50.
Background And Purpose: The European Academy of Neurology (EAN) has adhered to the global plan for reducing the burden of neurological disorders and promoting brain health launched by the World Health Organisation (WHO), the WHO Intersectoral Global Action Plan on Epilepsy and Other Neurological Disorders. This study reports the results of an EAN survey among national neurological societies (NNSs) on their awareness of brain health policies.
Methods: The EAN survey on the current state of national brain health policies was conducted among the 47 presidents of the NNSs affiliated with the EAN, with the aim of developing the best strategy for close collaboration among stakeholders.
