We investigated the role of hematopoietically expressed homeobox protein (Hhex) in osteoclast development. Trimethylation of lysine 27 of histone H3 at the -regulatory element of was maintained and that of lysine 4 was reduced during receptor activator of nuclear factor κB ligand (RANKL)-induced osteoclastogenesis, which was associated with a reduction of expression. Overexpression of in bone marrow-derived macrophages inhibited, whereas suppression promoted, RANKL-induced osteoclastogenesis in vitro.

Background Clinical outcomes of acute myocardial infarction complicated by cardiogenic shock remain poor with high in-hospital mortality. Veno-arterial extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (VA-ECMO) has been widely used for patients with acute myocardial infarction complicated by cardiogenic shock refractory to conservative therapy, which is likely fatal without mechanical circulatory support. However, whether additional intra-aortic balloon pumping (IABP) use during VA-ECMO support improves clinical outcomes remains controversial.

The complication of left ventricular (LV) hypertrophy (LVH) is associated with increased incidence of major cardiovascular events. Hypertension is an independent risk factor among several factors contributing to the development of LVH, and thus appropriate treatment of both hypertension and LVH reduces the risk of developing heart failure. Mineralocorticoid-receptor blockers (MRBs) have been reported to improve the prognosis of LVH, but use of currently available MRBs is limited by adverse events.

Background: The albumin-bilirubin (ALBI) grade was developed to predict the prognosis of patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), which can stratify the prognosis even in HCC patients with Child-Pugh A. We evaluated the prognostic efficacy of the ALBI grade and Child-Pugh classification in HCC patients with Child-Pugh A stratified by the presence or absence of advanced fibrosis or a preoperative biomarker for advanced fibrosis.

Methods: We retrospectively analyzed 490 consecutive HCC patients with Child-Pugh A who underwent initial hepatectomies.

Patients with pleuroparenchymal fibroelastosis (PPFE) have severe breathlessness even with mild hypoxaemia. In patients with PPFE, accessory respiratory muscles, such as the sternocleidomastoid muscles, are used to maintain ventilation. An intense F-fluorodeoxyglucose uptake in accessory respiratory muscles using positron emission tomography/computed tomography reflects the strong respiratory effort of patients with PPFE.

Patients with cardiogenic shock due to acute myocardial infarction (AMI) can rapidly undergo veno-arterial extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (VA-ECMO) therapy to recover cardiac output and decrease mortality. However, the clinical indicators predictive of mortality in these patients remain unknown. We conducted a single-center retrospective cohort study targeting AMI patients undergoing VA-ECMO.

Although asymmetric deposition of the plant extracellular matrix is critical for the normal functioning of many cell types, the molecular mechanisms establishing this asymmetry are not well understood. During differentiation, Arabidopsis seed coat epidermal cells deposit large amounts of pectin-rich mucilage asymmetrically to form an extracellular pocket between the plasma membrane and the outer tangential primary cell wall. At maturity, the mucilage expands on contact with water, ruptures the primary cell wall, and extrudes to encapsulate the seed.

Introduction and definition of the term Learning Health System (LHS) appears to have occurred initially around 2007. Prior to this and the introduction of electronic health records (EHR), a predecessor could be found in the Clinical Pathways concept as a standard medical care plan and a tool to improve medical quality. Since 1997, Japan's Saiseikai Kumamoto Hospital (SKH) has been studying and implementing Clinical Pathways.

Background: The adapted systemic inflammation score (aSIS), calculated from serum albumin and the lymphocyte-to-monocyte ratio, has been reported to be a novel prognostic marker for some types of cancers. However, the prognostic impact of aSIS in patients with esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) remains controversial. This study aimed to examine the prognostic effects of aSIS in a large cohort of 509 ESCC patients.

Two-stage hepatectomy (TSH) is one of the specific surgical techniques that can expand the pool of resectable patients with initially unresectable colorectal liver metastases (CRLM). The indication of TSH for CRLM is only bilateral, multinodular disease, which cannot be resected by a single hepatectomy. TSH is nowadays considered an effective treatment for selected patients, with acceptable morbidity/mortality rates and promising long-term outcomes.

Pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) is one of the leading causes of cancer mortality worldwide. Although advances in systemic chemotherapy for PDAC have improved survival outcomes for patients with the disease, chemoresistance is a major treatment issue for unselected PDAC patient populations. The existence of heterogeneity caused by a mixture of tumor cells and stromal cells produces chemoresistance and limits the targeted therapy of PDAC.
