Background/aim: Genomic examination of tumor tissue has been clinically accepted, and the identification of actionable mutations for molecular-targeted therapy may provide substantial survival benefit for patients with advanced malignancies.
Case Report: A female patient in her 60s showed a stenosis of the afferent loop of the small intestine because of circumferential metastatic tumor 14 months after curative surgery for hilar cholangiocarcinoma. Chemotherapy with gemcitabine plus cisplatin was administered for 18 months.

Objectives: This study aimed to analyse the surgical outcomes for recurrent thymic epithelial tumours and identify the factors associated with post-recurrence survival, using an updated Japanese nationwide database.
Methods: The cohort that developed recurrence after the initial resection was extracted from an updated database of patients whose thymic epithelial tumours were treated surgically between 1991 and 2010. Furthermore, we reviewed clinicopathological and prognostic factors of re-resected cases.

Aim: Possible negative effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on short-term postoperative outcomes for colorectal perforation in Japan were examined in this study.
Methods: The National Clinical Database (NCD) is a large-scale database including more than 95% of surgical cases in Japan. We analyzed 13 107 cases of colorectal perforation from 2019 to 2021.

Pulmonary neuroendocrine (NE) cells are rare airway epithelial cells. The balance between Achaete-scute complex homolog 1 (ASCL1) and hairy and enhancer of split 1, one of the target molecules of the Notch signaling pathway, is crucial for NE differentiation. Small cell lung cancer (SCLC) is a highly aggressive lung tumor, characterized by rapid cell proliferation, a high metastatic potential, and the acquisition of resistance to treatment.

The excess mortality of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) solid organ transplant recipients (SOTRs) throughout the pandemic remains unclear. This prospective cohort study based on the Japanese nationwide registry included 1632 SOTRs diagnosed with COVID-19 between February 1, 2020, and July 31, 2022, categorized based on dominant phases of variants of concern (VOCs): Waves 1 to 3 (Beta), 4 (Alpha), 5 (Delta), 6 (Omicron BA.1/BA.

The tyrosine kinase inhibitor lenvatinib has been confirmed as an effective treatment option for patients with unresectable thyroid carcinoma. We conducted a retrospective analysis of the significance of the effect of continued lenvatinib treatment for the longest duration possible at a reasonable daily dose and with a minimum discontinuation period in 42 patients with unresectable thyroid carcinoma treated with lenvatinib between 2015 and 2020. A Cox proportional hazard model-based analysis revealed that the overall survival of the patients treated with a <8 mg/day mean dose of lenvatinib was significantly better than that of the patients treated with 8-24 mg/day (hazard ratio [HR] 0.

Purpose: In this research, we analyzed the expression of serpinB9 in hepatoblastoma and investigated the factors which enhance its expression.
Method: SerpinB9 expression in hepatoblastoma cell lines and macrophages co-cultured with each other or stimulated by anticancer agents was examined using RT-qPCR and western blotting. Immunohistochemistry for SerpinB9 in hepatoblastoma specimens was performed.

Aim: The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has significantly impacted the allocation of medical resources, including cancer screening, diagnosis, and treatment. We aimed to investigate the effects of the pandemic on morbidity and mortality following hepatectomy for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC).
Methods: We identified patients who underwent hepatectomy for HCC between 2018 and 2021 from the Japanese National Clinical Database (NCD).

Many large-scale studies show that exogenous erythropoietin, erythropoiesis-stimulating agents, lack any renoprotective effects. We investigated the effects of endogenous erythropoietin on renal function in kidney ischemic reperfusion injury (IRI) using the prolyl hydroxylase domain (PHD) inhibitor, Roxadustat (ROX). Four h of hypoxia (7% O) and 4 h treatment by ROX prior to IRI did not improve renal function.

Aim: The Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic affected the allocation of various medical resources to several areas, including intensive care units (ICUs). However, currently, its impact on the short-term postoperative outcomes of gastrointestinal cancer surgeries remains unclear. We aimed to evaluate the impact of the pandemic on the incidence of complications occurring after low anterior resection in patients with rectal cancer in Japan.

Nuclear factor of activated T cells 5 (NFAT5; also called TonEBP/OREBP) is a transcription factor that is activated by hypertonicity and induces osmoprotective genes to protect cells against hypertonic conditions. In the kidney, renal tubular NFAT5 is known to be involved in the urine concentration mechanism. Previous studies have suggested that NFAT5 modulates the immune system and exerts various effects on organ damage, depending on organ and disease states.

Among primary thyroid lymphomas (PTLs), diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL) has a poorer prognosis than other indolent lymphomas such as mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue (MALT) or follicular lymphoma (FL). However, the clinical differences between DLBCL and indolent lymphoma remain unclear. Therefore, this retrospective study on PTL was aimed at investigating the clinical differences between DLBCL and indolent lymphomas and identifying the factors differentiating DLBCL from indolent lymphomas.

Background: The principle of hepatoblastoma (HB) treatment is complete resection. The removal of tumor-bearing section(s) or hemiliver is widely accepted. However, neither the standardized anterior approach for right hepatectomy nor parenchymal sparing anatomical liver resection has been described for HB.
