[A resected case of locally invasive rectal cancer successfully treated with neoadjuvant capecitabine, oxaliplatin, bevacizumab and radiation therapy].

A 57-year-old man was admitted to our hospital with a complaint of perineal pain. He was diagnosed as advanced rectal cancer with an invasion of prostate, and we conducted neoadjuvant capecitabine, oxaliplatin, bevacizumab and radiation therapy. After chemoradiation therapy, the tumor regressed to an ulcerative lesion without invasion of the prostate.

[A resected case of gastric regional lymph node metastasis from ascending colon cancer].

A 67-year-old man underwent right hemi-colectomy for ascending colon cancer in 2007. One year later, he was diagnosed as early gastric cancer, and endoscopic submucosal dissection was performed. Pathologically, cancer cells were detected on the vertical margin, so we conducted distal gastrectomy.

[A case of extraovarian primary peritoneal carcinoma successfully treated with weekly paclitaxel].

We report the use of paclitaxel in the successful treatment of a 74-year-old patient with extraovarian primary peritoneal carcinoma and acute renal failure caused by intraperitoneal cisplatin. The histological diagnosis was papillary serous adenocarcinoma. Paclitaxel was given intravenously at 70 mg/m2 in a 1-hour infusion weekly for 6 consecutive weeks followed by 2-weeks rest (one cycle).

[Postoperative right ventricular function after repair of tetralogy of Fallot with respect to the method of right ventricular outflow tract reconstruction].

We evaluated postoperative right ventricular function in the sixty-four consecutive patients with tetralogy of Fallot underwent total correction. The patients were divided to three groups according to the method of right ventricular outflow tract reconstruction: transannular patching (TA group; n = 31); right ventricular outflow patching with preservation of pulmonary valve ring (RV group; n = 12) and transatrial-transpulmonary approach without right ventriculotomy (no-RV group; n = 21). The early results of postoperative cardiac catheterization and echocardiography were compared among the three groups.

[Two cases of spontaneous hemopeumothorax].

We experienced two cases of spontaneous hemopeumothorax. One case was a 17-year-old male with a complaint of back pain. A chest tube for rapid pleural evacuation disclosed hemorrhage as much as 3,000 ml, with drainage volume being gradually decreased.

Larva currens: the usefulness of the agar plate method.

Creeping eruption caused by Strongyloides stercoralis is called larva currens, while those caused by other parasites are called larva migrans. To detect the parasite, the direct smear method was used. However, this method is not very sensitive in detecting S.

A case of 5-fluorouracil cardiotoxicity simulating acute myocardial infarction.

5-Fluorouracil (5-FU) is widely used in the treatment of various solid tumors. However, 5-FU cardiotoxicity is being reported with increasing frequency. The main symptom of cardiotoxicity is chest pain at rest with ischemic electrocardiographic changes.

[Neurocutaneous melanosis--a case report].

Neurocutaneous melanosis is a rare congenital phacomatosis characterized by the presence of large or multiple congenital melanocytic nevi and benign or malignant pigmented cell tumors of the leptomeninges. A 14-month-old boy was admitted with a recent history of vomiting and drowsiness. He was found to have multiple congenital melanocytic nevi.

[A combination chemotherapy of carboplatin and etoposide for malignant fibrous histiocytoma with marked effect on the metastatic lung region].

For metastatic lung region, a 82-year-old woman with malignant fibrous histiocytoma was successfully treated with combination chemotherapy of Carboplatin and Etoposide. First, the tumor appeared on her right thigh, and we operated on August 1991. However, at the same time, a metastatic lung region was also noticed.

Interleukin-2 prevents programmed cell death in adult T-cell leukemia cells.

Adult T-cell leukemia (ATL) is a prototype of the lymphoma/leukemia syndromes involving immunologically mature T-lymphocytes. The first retrovirus described in humans, HTLV-1, is causally related to the disease. In this study, we examined whether ATL cells die in vitro through programmed cell death (PCD), which has been shown to occur in cells affected by several other acute and chronic leukemias.

Aggressive osteoblastoma of the calcaneus.

Aggressive osteoblastoma of the left calcaneus in 29-year-old Japanese woman is reported. Her initial symptom was heel pain while walking. This was a primary calcaneal tumor, initially diagnosed as a benign osteoblastoma.

[Brain metastases from Wilms' tumor without systemic involvement--a case report and review].

A 3-year-old boy presented with multiple brain metastases 21 months after the resection of stage II Wilms' tumor. Metastasis to other organs was not found. He was treated by total removal of a large metastatic tumor in the left temporal lobe and post-operative radiotherapy and chemotherapy.

A case of intraosseous angioleiomyoma.

We report a rare case of expansively growing angioleiomyoma in the proximal tibia of a 64-year-old woman. MRI revealed a well-defined area of low signal intensity on T1-weighted image and high intensity on T2-weighted image. Angiographs showed hypervascularity and vascular poolings.

[The effects of oxygen and vasodilators on pulmonary hemodynamics and blood gases in chronic lung disease].

The effects of oxygen inhalation, nitroglycerin (NTG) and prostaglandin E1 (PGE1) on pulmonary hemodynamics and blood gases were studied in 15 patients with chronic lung disease (CLD). Cardiac catheterization was performed with Swan-Ganz catheter, and pulmonary hemodynamics and cardiac output were measured. After baseline hemodynamics and blood gas measurements were made, 15 patients inhaled oxygen for 15 minutes and the same measurements were repeated.

[A case of leiomyoma of the trachea].

An asymptomatic 59-year-old male in whom an abnormal shadow was detected on indirect chest X-ray film, was referred to our hospital for further examination. Further examinations revealed no problem at the previously checked site. However, bronchoscopy revealed a protruding hemispheric lesion on the membranous portion of the trachea 2 cm above the carina.

[Expression of ras oncogene p21 in relation to prognostic factors of human breast cancer].

For the purpose of demonstrating the relationship between the expression of ras oncogene p21 protein and clinico-pathological characteristics which reflected the prognosis, 253 women with breast cancer who underwent mastectomy were analyzed. Ras p21 was detected in 133 (52.6%).

[Clinical studies of 16 cases of carcinomatous pericarditis].

We studied the effects of local therapy on cardiac tamponade caused by carcinomatous pericarditis in 16 cases. Five out of 16 cases (drainage group) received treatment by only drainage of pericardial effusion, and the remaining 11 cases (infusion group) had local infusion of antineoplastic agents into the pericardium after drainage. The median survival time was 16 weeks in the infusion group and 19 weeks in the drainage group.

[The diagnosis of ocular sarcoidosis without intrathoracic signs].

Since it is difficult to diagnose ocular sarcoidosis without intrathoracic signs we studied the ocular stage, broncho-alveolar lavage fluid (BALF) and transbronchial lung biopsy (TBLB). Our results showed that we can diagnose such patients as sarcoidosis when BALF lymphocytes are over 20%, the CD4+/CD8+ ratio is over 3.0 and alveolitis is noticed on TBLB.

[Oral findings of institutionalized handicapped children].

In this study, we investigated the oral conditions of 77 handicapped children (57 boys and 20 girls) and backgrounds of living in an institution. The results were as follows. Among 73 children having permanent dentition, the percentage of subjects with one or more DMF teeth was 94.

[A study of the proliferative activity of DNA polymerase alpha immunoreactivity in breast cancer].

DNA polymerase alpha activity is associated with cell proliferation, independently of the cell cycle phase, and a simple and reproducible method for the immunohistochemical demonstration of DNA polymerase alpha has been developed. In an analysis of a total of 76 human breast cancer tissues using this procedure, the clinico-pathological findings revealed that only the estrogen receptor (ER) significantly correlated with the DNA polymerase alpha activity. Therefore, this suggests that ER-negative tumors had a higher proliferative activity.
