High dose inactivated influenza vaccine inconsistently improves heterologous antibody responses in an elderly human cohort.

Background: Older adults often mount a weak immune response to standard inactivated influenza vaccines. To induce a stronger response and better protection, a high-dose (HD) version of the inactivated Fluzone vaccine is recommended for individuals >65 years of age. While better immunogenicity and protection against the vaccine strain has been shown, it is not known if the HD vaccine also induces a robust antibody response to heterologous strains.

Protective Effect of Transient Receptor Potential Ankyrin 1 Inhibition on Renal Ischemia Reperfusion Injury in Rats.

The transient receptor potential ankyrin 1 (TRPA1) channels, characterized as nonselective cation channels with permeability to calcium ions (Ca), are part of the extensive family of transient receptor potential (TRP) channels. Research has demonstrated that TRPA1 channels function as sensors for oxidative stress in the renal tubules. Additionally, TRPA1 expression has increased in renal tissue following ischemia-reperfusion (IR).

The efficacy of lavender oil on fatigue and sleep quality in patients with hematological malignancy receiving chemotherapy: a single-blind randomized controlled trial.

Purpose: The aim of this study is to evaluate how aromatherapy with the inhalation of lavender oil affects fatigue and sleep quality in patients with hematological malignancies undergoing chemotherapy.

Methods: This randomized, parallel-group study was carried out in the Adult Bone Marrow Transplant unit and Hematology-Oncology clinics between January 2022 and April 2023. A total of 120 patients were assigned to experimental and control groups by randomization.

Introduction: Neuromuscular electrical stimulation (NMES) is a potentially effective intervention to improve outcomes after a fragility fracture, but its feasibility in this group has not been established.

Methods: A feasibility study was conducted in two phases: 1) in the hospital only, and 2) hospital, rehabilitation centres, and participants' homes. Patients with fragility fracture were randomised to receive NMES for 6 weeks/discharge either to the right or left leg, with the other leg serving as control.

Background: The concept of cognitive reserve may explain inter-individual differences in susceptibility to neuropathological changes. Studies suggest that experiences over a lifetime impact on cognitive reserve, and it is hypothesised that following a dementia diagnosis, greater reserve levels are linked to accelerated disease progression.

Objective: To investigate the longitudinal impact of cognitive reserve on cognitive and functional abilities, physical activity and quality of life in people with dementia.

Objective: The aims of this study were to determine the incidence of macrosomic births over a 5-year period and to examine the childbirth complications for both mother and newborn.

Patients And Methods: During the study period there were a total of 16,126 deliveries, of which 1905 were macrosomic fetuses (defined as those with a birthweight of 4000 g or more). Data on the course of pregnancy and childbirth were collected from existing maternal and peripartum medical records.

Background: The ability to access and navigate online sexual health information and support is increasingly needed in order to engage with wider sexual healthcare. However, people from underserved populations may struggle to pass though this "digital doorway". Therefore, using a behavioural science approach, we first aimed to identify barriers and facilitators to i) seeking online sexual health information and ii) seeking online sexual health support.

Importance: To efficiently perform bimanual daily tasks, bimanual coordination is needed. Bimanual coordination is the interaction between an individual's hands, which may be impaired post-stroke, however clinical and functional assessments are lacking and research is limited.

Objectives: To develop a valid and reliable observation tool to assess bimanual coordination of individuals post-stroke.

Understanding the spectrum of services provided by family physicians across different regions is important for health human resource planning (HHRP).

Background: Exposure to per and poly-fluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) is suggested to interfere with the central nervous system that may affect mental health. Studies on the relationships between exposure to PFAS mixtures and anxiety in humans are rare. This study aimed to evaluate the associations between single and combined exposure to PFAS and anxiety among adults.

Elucidating the anticancer potential of dendrobine in renal cell carcinoma treatment.

Renal cell carcinoma (RCC) is the predominant form of kidney cancer. Despite the significant improvements in survival rates for advanced RCC patients due to targeted therapy and immunotherapy, challenges such as drug resistance and severe adverse reactions continue to hinder effective management. Therefore, there is an urgent need to identify new therapeutic agents for RCC.

Purpose: Benzodiazepines and z-drugs are often prescribed to critical care survivors due to high prevalence of mental health problems and insomnia. However, their safety has not been studied in this population.

Methods: Retrospective cohort study of 28,678 adult critical care survivors hospitalised in 2010 and 2018: 4844 prescribed benzodiazepines or z-drugs, matched to 23,834 unexposed survivors using UK Clinical Practice Research Datalink linked datasets.

Therefore, the aim of this study was to assess serum ferritin concentration and prevalence of iron deficiency among pregnant women in Jiangsu, China.

Bring dying at home: What facilitates and hinders home-based end-of-life care for people living with dementia?-A systematic review and meta-ethnography protocol.

Background: Although home-based end-of-life care is more in line with the preferences of people living with dementia, operationalizing this ideal remains challenging. Many people living with dementia are still unable to die at home or receive end-of-life care at home. This review aims to apply meta-ethnography to synthesize existing qualitative studies, to identify the facilitators and barriers of home-based end-of-life care for people living with dementia.

Background: In this longitudinal study, we aimed to determine factors influencing survival outcomes among patients with stroke at three tertiary hospitals over a 12-month period. The investigation sought to uncover influential determinants to enhance the precision of prognostic assessments and inform targeted interventions for individuals affected by stroke.

Methods: Employing a longitudinal study design, participants were observed for 12 months from baseline, censoring survivors at the endpoint.

Negligible contribution of body density to in-water vertical jump performance in elite male water polo players.

The aim of this study was to investigate the associations among in-water vertical jump and various dry-land physical measures by taking the law of Archimedes into consideration, and by normalizing the dry-land measures both to body density and body mass. Seventeen elite water polo players from Hungarian first league were tested for dry-land counter movement and squat jump mechanical impulse, isometric squat force, and in-water vertical jump height. Body density was estimated by anthropometric measurements.

High-coverage whole-genome sequencing of a Jakun individual from the "Orang Asli" Proto-Malay subtribe from Peninsular Malaysia.

Jakun, a Proto-Malay subtribe from Peninsular Malaysia, is believed to have inhabited the Malay Archipelago during the period of agricultural expansion approximately 4 thousand years ago (kya). However, their genetic structure and population history remain inconclusive. In this study, we report the genome structure of a Jakun female, based on whole-genome sequencing, which yielded an average coverage of 35.

Tobacco-free generation: reflecting on progress globally and its potential feasibility in India.

Tobacco-free generation (TFG) policies, also conceptualised as smoke-free or nicotine-free generation in some geographies, envision the elimination of tobacco use initiation by preventing tobacco sales to generations born after a specified birth date. This cohort-based policy approach eventually aims to phase out tobacco use. This paper defines TFG, reviews its international developments and explores the feasibility of the TFG policy approach in India, considering the country's federal governance structure with health as a state responsibility, within a national policy framework.
