Diabetic retinopathy, a microvascular complication of diabetes, is the leading cause of blindness in adults, but the molecular mechanism of its development remains unclear. Retinal mitochondrial DNA is damaged and hypermethylated, and mtDNA-encoded genes are downregulated. Expression of a long noncoding RNA (larger than 200 nucleotides, which does not translate into proteins), encoded by mtDNA, cytochrome B (Lnc), is also downregulated.

Purpose: To evaluate the outcomes of scleral-fixated intraocular lenses (IOLs) implanted using either Yamane technique or Gore-Tex suture fixation, in comparison to intracapsular lens fixation, and to assess the efficacy of various lens formulas in achieving predicted refractive targets.

Auditory-nerve fibers (ANFs) from a given cochlear region can vary in threshold sensitivity by up to 60 dB, corresponding to a 1000-fold difference in stimulus level, although each fiber innervates a single inner hair cell (IHC) via a single synapse. ANFs with high-thresholds also have low spontaneous rates (SRs) and synapse on the side of the IHC closer to the modiolus, whereas the low-threshold, high-SR fibers synapse on the side closer to the pillar cells. Prior biophysical work has identified modiolar-pillar differences in both pre- and post-synaptic properties, but a comprehensive explanation for the wide range of sensitivities remains elusive.

To report a case of suprachoroidal migration of mitomycin-C (MMC) with ensuing retinal toxicity after trabeculectomy. A case report of retinal toxicity is described with multimodal imaging. A patient developed occlusion of the retinal and choroidal vasculature in a segmental fashion that could be explained by suprachoroidal diffusion.

Purpose: To train and validate a convolutional neural network to segment nonperfusion areas (NPAs) in multiple retinal vascular plexuses on widefield optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA).

Methods: This cross-sectional study included 202 participants with a full range of diabetic retinopathy (DR) severities (diabetes mellitus without retinopathy, mild to moderate non-proliferative DR, severe non-proliferative DR, and proliferative DR) and 39 healthy participants. Consecutive 6 × 6-mm OCTA scans at the central macula, optic disc, and temporal region in one eye from 202 participants in a clinical DR study were acquired with a 70-kHz OCT commercial system (RTVue-XR).

A scoping review of 45 peer-reviewed manuscripts involving intraocular pressure (IOP) change and concurrent optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA) assessments was performed to aggregate knowledge, summarize major findings, and identify gaps in literature and methodology relating to the effect of IOP change on OCTA. Articles were identified through PubMed/Medline, Google Scholar, Cochrane, Web of Science, and article reference lists. A total of 838 results were identified, and 45 articles met the inclusion and exclusion criteria for detailed analysis.

Loss of synapses between spiral ganglion neurons and inner hair cells (IHC synaptopathy) leads to an auditory neuropathy called hidden hearing loss (HHL) characterized by normal auditory thresholds but reduced amplitude of sound-evoked auditory potentials. It has been proposed that synaptopathy and HHL result in poor performance in challenging hearing tasks despite a normal audiogram. However, this has only been tested in animals after exposure to noise or ototoxic drugs, which can cause deficits beyond synaptopathy.

Purpose: To investigate the mechanisms underlying the differential roles of TGFβ1 and TGFβ3 in accelerating corneal epithelial wound healing (CEWH) in diabetic (DM) corneas, with normoglycemia (NL) corneas as the control.

Methods: Two types of diabetic mice, human corneal organ cultures, mouse corneal epithelial progenitor cell lines, and bone marrow-derived macrophages (BMDMs) were employed to assess the effects of TGFβ1 and TGFβ3 on CEWH, utilizing quantitative PCR, western blotting, ELISA, and whole-mount confocal microscopy.

Results: Epithelial debridement led to an increased expression of TGFβ1 and TGFβ3 in cultured human NL corneas, but only TGFβ1 in DM corneas.

Diabetic patients have elevated homocysteine levels, and hyperhomocysteinemia is shown to exacerbate mitochondrial damage, which plays a central role in diabetic retinopathy. Glutathione peroxidases (GPx) catalyze hydrogen peroxide (HO) reduction using glutathione (GSH) as a cofactor. GSH and GPx are mainly cytosolic but are also present in the mitochondria to neutralize HO produced by superoxide dismutase, and in diabetes, they are downregulated.

Zika virus (ZIKV) infection during pregnancy causes severe neurological and ocular abnormalities in infants, yet no vaccine or antivirals are available. Our transcriptomic analysis of ZIKV-infected retinal pigment epithelial (RPE) cells revealed alterations in the cholesterol pathway. Thus, we investigated the functional roles of ATP binding cassette transporter G1 (ABCG1) and sterol response element binding protein 2 (SREPB-2), two key players in cholesterol metabolism, during ocular ZIKV infection.

Incidental finding of a retained intracorneal wooden foreign body.

We present a case of an intracorneal wooden foreign body that remained undetected for 15 years following an ocular injury sustained during gardening. The patient presented with stable visual acuity despite the long-standing presence of a wooden splinter embedded in the cornea. Interestingly, Pentacam corneal tomography did not show any abnormalities despite the foreign body piercing through the corneal stroma and endothelium.
