In this paper, we investigated the evolution of the dispersion curves of long-period fiber gratings (LPFGs) from room temperature down to 0 K. We considered gratings arc-induced in the SMF28 fiber and in two B/Ge co-doped fibers. Computer simulations were performed based on previously published experimental data.

The number of passive oscillators determines the number of multistable oscillatory regimes coexisting in the proposed system. It is shown that our system can be used in robotics applications as a simple model for a central pattern generator (CPG).

In this paper, we investigate modification of transmission spectra of long-period fiber grating structures with an acoustic shock front propagating along the fiber. We simulate transmission through inhomogeneous long-period fiber gratings, π-shift and reflective π-shift gratings deformed by an acoustic shock front. Coupled mode equations describing interaction of co-propagating modes in a long-period fiber grating structures with inhomogeneous deformation are used for the simulation.

In this work, we review the most important achievements of INESC TEC related to the properties and applications of arc-induced long-period fiber gratings. The polarization dependence loss, the spectral behavior at temperatures ranging from cryogenic up to 1200 °C and under exposure to ultraviolet and gamma radiation is described. The dependence of gratings sensitivity on the fabrication parameters is discussed.

In this work, we reviewed the most important achievements of INESC TEC related to the fabrication of long-period fiber gratings using the electric arc technique. We focused on the fabrication setup, the type of fiber used, and the effect of the fabrication parameters on the gratings' transmission spectra. The theory was presented, as well as a discussion on the mechanisms responsible for the formation of the gratings, supported by the measurement of the temperature reached by the fiber during an electric arc discharge.

A method for controlling the excitation of cladding modes by tapering special fiber insertions made of SM450 and coreless fibers is proposed. The coupling coefficients between the core mode and the cladding modes of the tapered fiber insertion are calculated. For the calculation, changes in the effective refractive indices and phases of the fiber core and in the cladding modes upon tapering are found.

Plants sharing a single light environment on a spaceship with a human being and bearing a decorative function should look as natural and attractive as possible. And consequently they can be illuminated only with white light with a high color rendering index. Can lighting optimized for a human eye be effective and appropriate for plants? The Smoluchowski equation with an energy profile of a special type and an assumed hydrophobic ("half") pore source term is used to describe the process of hydrophilic pore formation in a lipid bilayer at the gel-liquid phase transition. The source term reflects the occurrence of molecule packing defects in a lipid bilayer at phase transition. The time sequences of the pore formation and closure events are treated as non-stationary, second-order Erlang flows whose characteristics depend on the equation solution.

We study the collective dynamics of oscillators in a network of identical bistable time-delayed feedback systems globally coupled via the mean field. The influence of delay and inertial properties of the mean field on the collective behavior of globally coupled oscillators is investigated. A variety of oscillation regimes in the network results from the presence of bistable states with substantially different frequencies in coupled oscillators.

Electromagnetic waves are known to exert optical forces on particles through radiation pressure. It was hypothesized previously that electromagnetic waves inside left-handed metamaterials produce negative radiation pressure. We propose a method for the recovery of coupling architecture and the parameters of elements in networks consisting of coupled oscillators described by delay-differential equations. For each oscillator in the network, we introduce an objective function characterizing the distance between the points of the reconstructed nonlinear function. The proposed method is based on the minimization of this objective function and the separation of the recovered coupling coefficients into significant and insignificant coefficients.

We propose a method to recover from time series the parameters of coupled time-delay systems and the architecture of couplings between them. The method is based on a reconstruction of model delay-differential equations and estimation of statistical significance of couplings. It can be applied to networks composed of nonidentical nodes with an arbitrary number of unidirectional and bidirectional couplings.
