Self-reported antibiotic stewardship and infection control measures from 57 intensive care units: An international ID-IRI survey.

We explored the self-reported antibiotic stewardship (AS), and infection prevention and control (IPC) activities in intensive care units (ICUs) of different income settings. A cross-sectional study was conducted using an online questionnaire to collect data about IPC and AS measures in participating ICUs. The study participants were Infectious Diseases-International Research Initiative (IDI-IR) members, committed as per their institutional agreement form.

Rare vascular involvement in Behçet's disease: Coronary artery pseudoaneurysm.

Behçet's disease is a relapsing, inflammatory, multi-systemic disease. Coronary arterial involvement in Behçet's disease is very rare with a prevalence of less than 0.5%.

Surgical treatment of a difficult case of atrial tachycardia requiring multiple electrophysiologic procedures.

A 34-year-old male with incessant drug-refractory atrial tachycardia (AT) was referred to our clinic for catheter ablation. The procedure began with endocardial activation mapping. The earliest endocardial activation site was in the right atrial appendage (RAA).

The Role of Non-Vitamin K Antagonist Oral Anticoagulants (NOACs) in Atrial Fibrillation: Treatment Management Based on Patient and Drug Characteristics.

Data from Turkey revealed that atrial fibrillation patient percentage under adequate anti- coagulation in Turkey is less than that in other countries due to multiple parameters such as treatment adherence problems, failure to follow guideline recommendations, negative perspective on the use of new drugs, drug costs, and payment conditions. The aim of this article is to provide physicians with a compiled resource that focuses on the differences between non-vitamin K antagonist oral anticoagulants and heterogeneity of atrial fibrilla- tion patients by reviewing the global and national data from a multidisciplinary perspective and provide guidance on the choice of non-vitamin K antagonist oral anticoagulants in atrial fibrillation patients. A gastroenterologist, 2 neurologists, and 11 cardiologists from university and training and research hospitals in Turkey who are experienced in atrial fibrillation and non-vitamin K antagonist oral anticoagulant treatments gathered in 3 separate meetings to identify the review topics and evaluate the outcomes of the systematic literature search.

Comparison of ceftazidime-avibactam susceptibility testing methods against OXA-48-like carrying Klebsiella blood stream isolates.

Ceftazidime-avibactam exhibits good in vitro activity against carbapenem resistant Klebsiella carrying OXA-48-like enzymes. We tested two hundred unique carbapenem resistant Klebsiella blood stream isolates (71% with single OXA-48-like carbapenemases, including OXA-48, n = 62; OXA-232, n = 57; OXA-244, n = 17; OXA-181, n = 5) that were collected as part of a multicentre study against ceftazidime-avibactam using Etest (bioMérieux, Marcyl'Étoile, France), 10/4 μg disc (Thermo Fisher) and Sensititre Gram Negative EURGNCOL Plates (Lyophilized panels, Sensititre, Thermo Fisher) with the aim of comparing the performances of the Etest and disc to that of Sensititre. Ceftazidime-avibactam MIC was 2/>16 mg/L for the entire collection and was 2/4 mg/L for single OXA-48-like producers.

Vaccine hesitancy and refusal among parents: An international ID-IRI survey.

Introduction: Although vaccines are the safest and most effective means to prevent and control infectious diseases, the increasing rate of vaccine hesitancy and refusal (VHR) has become a worldwide concern. We aimed to find opinions of parents on vaccinating their children and contribute to available literature in order to support the fight against vaccine refusal by investigating the reasons for VHR on a global scale.

Methodology: In this international cross-sectional multicenter study conducted by the Infectious Diseases International Research Initiative (ID-IRI), a questionnaire consisting of 20 questions was used to determine parents' attitudes towards vaccination of their children.

Unifocalization with pericardial roll technique in pulmonary atresia with ventricular septal defect and major aortopulmonary collateral arteries.

Objective: This study aims to compare both the pericardial roll technique with the patch augmentation technique of the unifocalization, and single-stage complete repair with the unifocalization and shunt for the repair of the ventricular septal defect, pulmonary atresia, and major aortopulmonary collateral arteries.

Methods: This was a retrospective review of the 48 patients undergoing unifocalization of the ventricular septal defect, pulmonary atresia, and major aorticopulmonary collateral arteries from a single center. Our cohort had two surgical pathways, including single-stage midline unifocalization (n = 40), unifocalization after pulmonary artery rehabilitation by creating an aortopulmonary window or central shunt (n = 8).

The Use of Intraoperative Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation in Lung Transplantation: Initial Institutional Experience.

Introduction: Lung transplantation is the final treatment option for end-stage lung disease, and extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) is increasingly being used during lung transplantation.

Objective: The present study aimed to review our initial experience with patients who underwent lung transplantation with or without ECMO since the implementation of the lung transplantation program at our center.

Methods: Data were prospectively collected on all patients between December 2016 and December 2018.

Evaluation of postoperative renal functions and its effect on body perfusion in patients with double aortic cannulation.

Background: The optimal visceral preservation method during aortic arch reconstruction is still controversial. It has been thought that double aortic cannulation is effective. Herein, it was aimed to evaluate this technique in providing distal perfusion.

Bronchial Culture Growth From the Donor and Recipient as Predictive Factors in the Detection of Primary Graft Dysfunction and Pneumonia After Lung Transplant.

Objectives: In this study, our aim was to investigate whether bacterial culture growth from donors and recipients is related to early posttransplant complications and to analyze its role in primary graft dysfunction and posttransplant pneumonia in lung transplant recipients.

Materials And Methods: This retrospective cohort study included patients diagnosed with end-stage lung disease who received a lung transplant for treatment. We examined relationships between donor bronchial lavage, pretransplant recipient sputum, and recipient posttransplant serial bronchial lavage culture results, as well as the development of both primary graft dysfunction and pneumonia after lung transplant during the early posttransplant period.

Pulmonary Endarterectomy in Patients with Antiphospholipid Syndrome-Associated Chronic Thromboembolic Pulmonary Hypertension.

Background: Antiphospholipid syndrome is an autoimmune disease characterized by the occurrence of venous and/or arterial thrombosis. Chronic thromboembolism is one of the known established pathogenesis of pulmonary hypertension, known as chronic thrombo-embolic pulmonary hypertension. Pulmonary endarterectomy is the treatment of choice for chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension.

An outbreak of Ralstonia pickettii bloodstream infection and clinical outcomes.

Introduction: Ralstonia pickettii infections are rare and may be mistaken for other bacteria. This study aims to report a hospital outbreak of R. pickettii at a tertiary hospital, which was initially misidentified as Ralstonia insidiosa, along with its clinical consequences.

Effects of RAAS blocker use on AKI in elderly hypertensive STEMI patients with propensity score weighed method.

Studies reported conflicting results on the effect of renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system (RAAS) blocker use on acute kidney injury (AKI) in patients undergoing elective coronary angiography but association in elderly patients with ST-elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) is not known. Also, there are limited data on the effect of inflammatory markers on AKI. We aimed to investigate the effects of RAAS blocker pretreatment and inflammatory markers on AKI in this population.

The role of neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio in predicting mortality after bidirectional Glenn procedure.

This study aimed to address the role of various inflammation-related blood indices for the assessment of in-hospital outcomes in subjects undergoing Glenn procedure. Subjects who underwent the Glenn procedure for hypoplastic left heart syndrome were analysed retrospectively. Subjects were divided into two groups: Group 1 consisted of 78 patients who were discharged, and Group 2 included 12 patients who died after surgery.

Infection profile of patients with extracorporeal membrane oxygenation in paediatric cardiac surgery ICU.

Aim: We investigated the risk of increased nosocomial infections and the associated pathogens in patients who underwent paediatric cardiovascular surgery and were put on extracorporeal membrane oxygenation support. We studied the duration of extracorporeal membrane oxygenation use and other variables that may be associated with increased nosocomial infection risk.

Methods: Patients who were treated with an extracorporeal membrane oxygenation in paediatric cardiovascular surgery ICU between 2010 and 2020 were included in this retrospective study.

Prognostic value of triglyceride/glucose index in patients with ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction.

New parameters are emerging to predict prognosis in patients with ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI). In this study we aimed to determine and compare the prognostic values of some metabolic indices in terms of predicting long-term mortality in patients with STEMI. A total of 1900 nondiabetic patients who presented with STEMI and underwent percutaneous coronary intervention were included in the study.

Carotid artery stenting without embolic protection: A randomized multicenter trial (the CASWEP trial).

Background: Carotid artery stenting (CAS) with a carotid protection device (CPD) has become the standard practice in patients with severe carotid stenosis and high surgical risk. However, the clinical efficacy and safety of CPDs are still controversial issues. We aimed to compare the clinical outcomes of the CAS without CPD with CAS combined with CPD.

Comparison of percutaneous access and open femoral cutdown in elective endovascular aortic repair of abdominal aortic aneurysms.

Background: The aim of this study was to compare postoperative outcomes of percutaneous access and femoral cutdown methods for elective bifurcated endovascular abdominal aortic aneurysm repair.

Methods: Between November 2013 and September 2020, a total of 152 patient (135 males, 17 females; mean age: 70.6±6, range, 57 to 87 years) who underwent endovascular repair due to infrarenal abdominal aortic aneurysm were retrospectively analyzed.

Relationship between right atrial pressure and the Model for End-Stage Liver Disease (MELD) score in patients with advanced heart failure.

Background: This study aims to investigate the association between right atrial pressure and the Model for End-Stage Liver Disease score and to evaluate the ability of this scoring system to accurately predict the value of right atrial pressure.

Methods: Between April 2016 and November 2018, a total of 137 patients (118 males, 19 females; median age: 49 years; range, 40 to 54 years) with advanced heart failure who were candidates for left ventricular assist device implantation or heart transplantation were retrospectively analyzed. We developed a formula calculated by using the biochemical and cardiac catheterization parameters of the patients.

Evaluation of the relationship between diabetic retinopathy and left atrial deformation parameters.

Background: Left ventricular systolic dysfunction (LVSD) may develop without coronary artery disease, hypertension (HT), or valvular pathologies in patients with diabetes mellitus (DM), which is defined as diabetic cardiomyopathy (DCM) and its pathophysiology is still unclear. Diabetic retinopathy (DR) is a microvascular complication of DM, and patients with DR have increased risk for the development of heart failure (HF). Two-dimensional speckle tracking echocardiography (2D-STE) evaluates longitudinal deformation in left atrium (LA) myocardium and previous studies utilizing 2D-STE have revealed the detrimental effects of DM on LA functions.

Diagnosis of Pulmonary Artery Sarcoma with Multi-modality Imaging.

Pulmonary artery sarcoma is an extremely uncommon malignancy with a poor prognosis. It is often difficult to distinguish it from pulmonary thromboembolic disease because of nonspe cific signs and symptoms as well as similar imaging findings. We present a 46-year-old man who had initially been diagnosed with presumed asthma that later proved to be pulmonary artery sarcoma.

Prognostic Impact of Nutritional Indices in Candidates for Heart Transplantation.

Objective: No study has thus far evaluated the association of controlling nutritional status (CO NUT) score and prognostic nutritional index (PNI) with prognosis in candidates listed for heart transplantation (HT). Therefore, in this study, we aimed to investigate the impact of these nutritional indices on prognosis in these candidates.

Methods: In this retrospective study, a total of 195 candidates for HT were included.
