Department of Neurosurgery, Yeditepe University, School of Medicine Kosuyolu Hospital, Kosuyolu Street, Kadıkoy, İstanbul, 34718, Türkiye.

This study aims to improve understanding of the anatomy of the deep brain nuclei relevant to deep brain stimulation as well as stereotactic lesioning procedures, including radio frequency, high-focused ultrasound, and radiosurgery. We created interactive, three-dimensional virtual models from cadaveric dissections and radiological segmentation. We used five brain specimens (ten hemispheres) obtained from routine autopsies, prepared according to Klingler's method.

Background And Objectives: Women with multiple sclerosis (MS) are at risk of disease reactivation in the early postpartum period. Ocrelizumab (OCR) is an anti-CD20 therapy highly effective at reducing MS disease activity. Data remain limited regarding use of disease-modifying therapies (DMTs), including OCR, and disease activity during peripregnancy periods.

Electronic address:

Article Synopsis
  • Hospital-acquired bloodstream infections (HA-BSI) in ICU patients can be life-threatening, and this study aimed to see how early adequate antibiotic treatment affects 28-day mortality rates for patients who survive at least one day after infection onset.
  • Using data from a multicenter study with 2,418 patients, researchers found that those who received adequate treatment within 24 hours had a lower 28-day mortality rate (32.8%) compared to those who were inadequately treated (40%).
  • The study concluded that inadequate antibiotic therapy within 24 hours contributes significantly to 28-day mortality, indicating that quicker treatment could greatly improve patient outcomes in cases of HA-BSI.

Tuberous sclerosis complex (TSC) is an inherited neurocutaneous disease characterized by multiple hamartomas in multiple organs. However, there is limited evidence about neuroendocrine tumors (NETs) in patients with TSC, and routine screening of NETs is not recommended in the guidelines. Insulinomas are also an extremely rare disease.

Although polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is primarily considered a hyperandrogenic disorder in women characterized by hirsutism, menstrual irregularity, and polycystic ovarian morphology, an endocrinological investigation should be performed to rule out other hyperandrogenic disorders (e.g., virilizing tumors, non-classical congenital adrenal hyperplasia (NCAH), hyperprolactinemia, and Cushing's syndrome) to make a certain diagnosis.

This systematic review (PROSPERO registration number: CRD42021282476) aims to collect and analyse current evidence on real-world performance based on clinical accuracy of instrument-read rapid antigen diagnostic tests (Ag-IRRDTs) for SARS-CoV-2 identification. We used PRISMA Checklist and searched databases (PubMed, Web of Science Core Collection and FIND) for publications evaluating the accuracy of SARS-CoV-2 Ag-IRRDTs as of 30 September 2021, and included 40 independent clinical studies resulting in 48 Ag-IRRDT datasets with 137,770 samples. Across all datasets, pooled Ag-IRRDT sensitivity was 67.

Women in neurosurgery: perspectives from a developing country; Turkey.

Neurosurg Rev

June 2022

Department of Neurosurgery, Umraniye Teaching and Research Hospital, Health Sciences University, Istanbul, Turkey.

Although at least half of medical students are women, neurosurgery is not often preferred by women, and the proportion of female neurosurgeons who can participate in the academic platform is very low. In this study, we aimed to show the role of female neurosurgeons in the Turkish Neurosurgical Society and to describe the number and the location of female neurosurgeons in Turkey. We examined the age, academic rank, years of work in the profession, membership rate in society subgroups, h-index parameters, and relationships of certificated female neurosurgeons registered in the Turkish Neurosurgical Society.

Article Synopsis
  • The study focused on evaluating the use of holmium:yttrium-aluminum-garnet laser during retrograde intrarenal surgery for kidney stones, involving 769 patients with detailed laser setting parameters recorded.
  • Results showed that higher laser power and frequency were used for middle calyceal stones, and there were positive correlations between laser parameters and factors like anesthesia time, surgery time, and stone size.
  • The study concluded that larger stone sizes and higher Hounsfield unit values significantly affected laser settings, leading to longer surgical durations and extended hospital stays, especially noted in cases with more severe intraoperative ureteral lesions.

Although the reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) method has been accepted as the reference method in the detection of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2) RNA, it requires special laboratory conditions, complicated and expensive laboratory instruments, competent laboratory staff and long testing duration. Antigen testing methods such as enzyme immunoassay, fluorescent antibody and visually-read immunochromatographic rapid antigen detection (RAD) tests eliminated the above mentioned disadvantages of the RT-PCR. The aim of this study was to determine the performance of a RAD test kit (V-Chek, SGA Ltd, Ankara, Turkey).

Unibody bifurcated endografts have the advantage of reducing the operative time, avoiding migration and iliac limb dislocation in patient with abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA). We report our long-term experience in patients who underwent endovascular aortic repair (EVAR) due to infrarenal AAA with Endologix AFX® endograft system. Between January 2013-December 2018, 68 patients with infrarenal AAA had EVAR procedure with Endologix AFX® endograft system.

Background: In this study, we aimed to evaluate the performance of modular and unibody endografts for the endovascular repair of abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA).

Methods: Between January 2012 and December 2017, 130 elective infrarenal abdominal aortic aneurysms treated in an endovascular manner were retrospectively evaluated. Sixty-six patients with the modular type (Medtronic Endurant II and Lifetech Ankura AAA) and 64 patients with the unibody type (Endologix AFX®) were compared with regards to early and postoperative one-year results.

Purely aqueductal tumors represent a rare but distinct entity of neoplasms with characteristic morphology and clinical presentation. This study aims to describe the extreme anterior interhemispheric transcallosal approach as a surgical option for purely aqueductal tumors in the upper part of the cerebral aqueduct and present the surgical results. Prospectively collected data of 4 patients undergoing the extreme anterior interhemispheric transcallosal approach for purely aqueductal tumors in the upper cerebral aqueduct was analyzed.

Considering the complex pathogenesis of endometriosis, which is associated with many cellular or molecular processes, such as proliferation, angiogenesis, inflammation, we evaluated the diagnostic value of a quadruple panel of serum markers CA125, endocan, YKL-40 and copeptin, for the prediction of endometriosis and moderate - severe endometriosis. Seventy women with endometriosis and 70 women without endometriosis were evaluated. Serum CA125, endocan, copeptin and YKL-40 levels were significantly increased in women with endometriosis compared to the women without endometriosis and in the minimal - mild endometriosis group compared to the no-endometriosis group.

Introduction: Patients with distant metastatic melanoma has a poor prognosis, with a reported median survival time of six to eight months. In modern era, survival has prolonged with the immunotherapy and targeted therapy options. Potent and selective BRAF inhibitors have been developed that specifically inhibit mutated BRAF over other RAF kinases.

Introduction: Renal cell carcinomas account for 90% of all malignant neoplasms of the kidney. The most common types of renal cancer in adults are clear cell and papillary renal cell carcinoma; sporadic cases of renal carcinomas containing chromosomal translocations are rare, more usually occurring in children and young adults. Nivolumab (a fully human immunoglobulin G4 PD-1 checkpoint inhibitor antibody) has received the Food and Drug Administration approval for the treatment of metastatic renal cell carcinoma in patients who have received prior antiangiogenic therapy.
