Objective: Serotonin (5-HT) infusion in vivo causes hypotension and a fall in total peripheral resistance. However, the vascular segment and the receptors that mediate this response remain in question. We hypothesized that 5-HT receptors mediate arteriolar dilation to 5-HT in skeletal muscle microcirculation.

Resurrection plants have the unique ability to restore normal physiological activity after desiccation to an air-dry state. In addition to their desiccation tolerance, some of them, such as and , are also freezing-tolerant species, as they survive subzero temperatures during winter. Here, we compared the response of the photosynthetic apparatus of two other Gesneriaceae species, and , together with , to cold and freezing temperatures.

Background: Acute myocardial infarction is characterised by an imbalance in the supply and demand of oxygen in the heart. It requires urgent reperfusion, and poor outcomes are attributed to myocardial ischaemia-reperfusion injury. We aimed to evaluate the association between apelin-12 levels and creatine kinase-MB activity in predicting the effectiveness of reperfusion therapy in ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) patients.

Background: The American Academy of Pediatrics Children's Health Survey for Asthma (CHSA) is a widely used instrument to assess various aspects of health and well-being in relation to asthma. There is a parent and a child version of this questionnaire and little is known about the concordance between these versions.
Method: In a cross-sectional study conducted in 13 facilities, hospitals and outpatient clinics covering all areas of Kosovo, children with asthma aged 7-16 years were enrolled.

Background: Very limited information is available on the prevalence and risk factors of asthma in adolescents in Kosovo, and no study has previously addressed the role of Human Development Index (HDI) on asthma in the region. The present study addresses these two issues.
Methods: Following the Global Asthma Network (GAN) methodology, a cross-sectional survey, through standardised self-completed questionnaires, was conducted in the following six centres of Kosovo: Ferizaj, Gjakova, Gjilan, Peja, Prishtina and Prizren.

Human and animal vector-borne diseases, particularly mosquito-borne diseases, are emerging or re-emerging worldwide. Six invasive mosquito (AIM) species were introduced to Europe since the 1970s: , , , , and . Here, we report the results of AIMSurv2020, the first pan-European surveillance effort for AIMs.

The early-stage diagnosis of papillary thyroid cancer (PTC) has significantly increased in incidence worldwide without any beneficial impact on survival. In order to improve the risk assessment in PTC, we have conducted a retrospective study in which we analyzed the BRAF V600E mutation and CPSF2 protein expression as prognostic markers on archival tissue samples of 49 patients without (control group) and 97 patients with (study group) PTC metastases in the cervical lymph nodes at the time of initial diagnosis. Our aim was to correlate the BRAF V600E mutation and the expression of CPSF2 protein with the clinical and pathological features of PTC.

This study aimed at investigating the distribution of heavy metals (HMs: Zn, Pb, Cd, Ni, Cr, and Cu) in the bottom sediments of 28 reservoirs covered area of Poland. The paper evaluates the pollution of sediments with HMs and their potential toxic effects on aquatic organisms and human health on the basis of results provided by the Chief Inspectorate of Environmental Protection in Poland. The average concentrations of HMs in the bottom sediments of the reservoirs were as follows: Cd < Ni < Cr < Cu < Pb < Zn.

Locally invasive papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC) protrudes beyond the thyroid capsule and invades local structures. Matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) and their inhibitors (TIMPs) are implicated in local invasion and metastasis in PTC. The aim of our study was to determine expression levels of MMP-1, MMP-2, MMP-9, TIMP-1, and TIMP-2 in tissue specimens of invasive and non-invasive PTC.

The aim of this study was to analyze the relationship between pre-hospital emergency care and in-hospital mortality in ACS patients treated at the University Clinical Centre of Kosovo Emergency Department (UCCK ED). This observational clinical study included 1498 ACS patients treated at UCCK ED and followed-up by phone call for one year after discharge from the hospital.

Accurate identification of insect species is an indispensable and challenging requirement for every entomologist, particularly if the species is involved in disease outbreaks. The European MediLabSecure project designed an identification (ID) exercise available to any willing participant with the aim of assessing and improving knowledge in mosquito taxonomy. The exercise was based on high-definition photomicrographs of mosquitoes (26 adult females and 12 larvae) collected from the western Palaearctic.

Renal osteodystrophy (ROD) is a complex and rare entity that refers to a large spectrum of abnormalities of skeletal homeostasis in patients suffering from chronic kidney disease. The goal of this study was to present the outcome of the very rare case of an adult with severe deformity of painful bilateral valgus knees due to ROD, requiring multilevel osteotomies above and below the knee. A 42-year-old male patient was admitted to our department with painful severe bilateral valgus knees deformity due to ROD.

Surface modification of gold is accomplished by using the aminyl radicals formed through the electrochemical oxidation of the amino-triazole molecule dissolved in organic media (acetonitrile). The electrochemistry of the grafting process and the redox behavior of the grafted heterocyclic layer are similar to those of aliphatic amines. The presence of AT groups on the electrode surface was studied by cyclic voltammetry (CV) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) before and after the functionalization process to confirm and prove the formation of a layer on the surface.

Background And Aims: Hydrophobic substances are mainly encapsulated into polymer nanocarriers in order to improve their solubility, enable their administration, at the same time to empower targeted tissue or cell specific delivery of the drug using the encapsulating vehicle as targeting and controlled release platform. 7-Ethyl-10-hydroxycamptothecin (SN-38) is an active metabolite of Irinotecan, showing 100-fold to 1000-fold higher effect than Irinotecan, but its clinical use is limited because of its extreme hydrophobicity, as it is practically insoluble in most physiologically compatible and pharmaceutically acceptable solvents.
Method: In order to fully exploit the potential of the nanoprecipitation as a method for preparation of Poly(DL-lactide-co-caprolactone)-poly(ethylene oxide) - poly(propylene oxide) - poly(ethylene oxide) (P(DL)LCL/PEO-PPO-PEO) nanoparticles and evaluate the influence of the polymer P(DL)LCL, stabilizing agent PEO-PPO-PEO copolymer (Lutrol F127) and the drug concentration (SN-38) upon drug entrapment efficiency, size and drug content, a D-optimal experimental design for response surface using Design Expert Version 9.
