Hyperthyroidism may impact liver biochemistry negatively. Clinicians need a high index of suspicion in patients presenting with unexplained deranged liver enzymes or jaundice. Timely initiation of thionamides portends good prognosis.

A rare case of multiple minor salivary gland sialoliths in the masseteric region.

We report a case of a 59-year-old woman who presented with swelling of the right cheek. CT Scan showed three calculi located anteromedial to the masseter, and well isolated from other major salivary glands. Calculi were surgically removed with standard intraoral incision and exploration.

Association between pulmonary function and cardiac enzymes in sickle cell disease.

Background: There is scarcity of data on association between lung function and cardiac markers in patients with sickle cell disease (SCD). Meanwhile, SCD affects multi-organs in any one population. There seem to be an association between reduced pulmonary function with cardiac dysfunction.

Assessment of infection prevention and control measures adopted by eye care practitioners in Ghana and South Africa against COVID-19.

This study investigated the infection prevention and control measures adopted by eye care practitioners in Ghana and South Africa during the lockdown phase of the COVID-19 pandemic. A descriptive, cross-sectional study was used to investigate infection prevention and control measures by eye care practitioners in Ghana ( = 189) and South Africa ( = 92) during the extended lockdown phase (01 April-30 June 2020) by both countries, immediately following the WHO declaration of COVI9-19 as a pandemic. Participants from both countries included Ophthalmologists, Optometrists, Ophthalmic nurses, and Opticians who were invited via email and social media platforms to complete an online questionnaire.

Exercise-induced haemoglobin oxygen desaturation in patients with SCD.

Background: Patients with sickle cell disease (SCD) may experience severe clinical complications when there is low tissue oxygenation due to the increased risk of the polymerization of haemoglobin S in deoxygenated environment. The predictors of oxygen desaturation after exercise is not clear in patients with SCD. The current study compared lung function and six-minute walk test (6MWT) between SCD patients with oxygen desaturation after exercise and those without oxygen desaturation.

Definitive Radiation Treatment Patterns and Outcomes for Low and Intermediate Risk Prostate Cancer Patients: A Cross-Continental Comparative Study.

Purpose: To evaluate early-stage prostate cancer (PCa) radiotherapy treatment patterns and outcomes among Ghanaian men (GM) compared with US men (USM).

Materials And Methods: This retrospective study consists of 987 National Comprehensive Cancer Network low risk, favorable intermediate risk, and unfavorable intermediate risk PCa patient subgroups; GM (173) and USM (814). Differences in baseline covariates and clinical characteristics between GM and USM were analyzed using χ and Mann-Whitney test while Cox Proportional Hazards model was used to assess freedom from biochemical failure differences between the study groups.

Total Serum Magnesium Levels and Calcium-To-Magnesium Ratio in Sickle Cell Disease.

Imbalance of calcium/magnesium ratio could lead to clinical complications in sickle cell disease (SCD). Low levels of magnesium have been associated with sickling, increased polymerization and vaso-occlusion (VOC) in sickle cell due to cell dehydration. The K-Cl cotransport plays a very important role in sickle cell dehydration and is inhibited by significantly increasing levels of magnesium.

Case series of six patients diagnosed and managed for idiopathic intracranial hypertension at a tertiary institution eye centre.

Background: Idiopathic Intracranial Hypertension (IIH) occurs secondary to raised intracranial pressure (ICP) of unknown etiology and is diagnosed when all other causes of raised ICP have been excluded. It can leave devastating sequelae such as permanent visual loss, hence the need for timely diagnosis and treatment. Anecdotally, one or two cases of idiopathic intracranial hypertension (IIH) previously presented at the Eye Centre, KBTH yearly.

Recommendations for cervical cancer prevention and control in Ghana: public education and human papillomavirus vaccination.

Unlabelled: Globally, cervical cancer is a major public health issue causing increasing morbidity and mortality especially in low- and middle-income countries where preventive and control measures are lacking. In Ghana, it is the most common cancer among women. Approaches to reduce the incidence and mortality of the disease in Ghana have had little success due to lack of accurate data on the disease among other factors, to inform policies on prevention, early detection, diagnosis and treatment.

Survey of magnetic resonance imaging availability in West Africa.

Introduction: The availability and utilization of MRI units across sub-Saharan Africa countries remain poor and its distribution is largely unknown. A cross-sectional survey was conducted to determine the distribution and utilization of MRI facilities across the West African sub-region.

Methods: An interview and online search survey was conducted from September 2015 to September 2016, to determine the MRI facilities (Government/Public and Private) available in the West African sub-region.

Prevalence and correlates of depression among caregivers of children living with HIV in Ghana: findings from the Sankofa pediatric disclosure study.

Prior studies show an association between caregiver depression and child health outcomes. There has been little examination of depression among caregivers of HIV-infected children in sub-Saharan countries where pediatric HIV is concentrated. Using baseline data collected in the pediatric HIV disclosure intervention trial, Sankofa, we examined the prevalence and factors associated with depression among caregivers (N = 446) of children infected with HIV in Ghana.

High prevalence of non-adherence to antiretroviral therapy among undisclosed HIV-infected children in Ghana.

Adherence to antiretroviral therapy (ART) remains one of the greatest obstacles in pediatric HIV care. We sought to determine the prevalence of adherence to ART among undisclosed HIV-infected children and adolescents in Ghana. We analyzed baseline data from HIV-infected children and adolescents aged 7-18 years old enrolled in the SANKOFA Pediatric HIV disclosure intervention study in Ghana.

Adherence to oral anti-diabetic drugs among patients attending a Ghanaian teaching hospital.

Background: The burden of diabetes mellitus, especially Type-2, continues to increase across the world. Medication adherence is considered an integral component in its management. Poor glycemic controls due to medication nonadherence accelerates the development of long-term complications which consequently leads to increased hospitalization and mortality.
