Clinical predictors and noninvasive imaging in Fontan-associated liver disease: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

Hepatol Commun

December 2024

Division of Pediatric Cardiology, Department of Pediatrics, Congenital Heart Disease Center, Severance Cardiovascular Hospital, Yonsei University College of Medicine, Seoul, Republic of Korea.

Background: Despite the development of several imaging modalities for diagnosing Fontan-associated liver disease (FALD), there is no optimal protocol for the follow-up of FALD. We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis to identify factors related to liver fibrosis using biopsy reports and to identify alternative noninvasive modalities that could better reflect liver histological changes in FALD.

Methods: A systematic review and meta-analysis were conducted following the PRISMA guidelines Table S2.

This study uses machine learning and multicenter registry data for analyzing the determinants of a favorable neurological outcome in patients with out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA) and developing decision support systems for various subgroups. The data came from the Korean Cardiac Arrest Research Consortium registry, with 2679 patients who underwent OHCA aged 18 or above with the return of spontaneous circulation (ROSC). The dependent variable was a favorable neurological outcome (Cerebral Performance Category score 1-2), and 68 independent variables were included, e.

Effective treatment of xanthelasma palpebrarum using Er:YAG laser.

Lasers Med Sci

January 2025

Department of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, Korea University College of Medicine, Korea University Anam Hospital, Seoul, South Korea.

Xanthelasma palpebrarum (XP), characterized by soft, yellowish plaque primarily on the eyelids, is often associated with lipid metabolism disorders. XP can cause aesthetic concerns that affect social interactions and requires careful treatment evaluations due to potential complications and associations with systemic conditions. We aimed to assess the efficacy of and recurrence rates with erbium:yttrium aluminum garnet (Er:YAG) laser therapy in the treatment of XP.

Background: The novel sodium-glucose cotransporter-2 (SGLT2) inhibitor enavogliflozin effectively lowers glycosylated hemoglobin levels and body weights without the increased risk of serious adverse events; however, the long-term clinical benefits of enavogliflozin in terms of cardiovascular and renal outcomes have not been investigated.

Methods: This study is an investigator-initiated, multicenter, randomized, pragmatic, open-label, active-controlled, non-inferiority trial. Eligible participants are adults (aged ≥19 years) with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) who have a history of, or are at risk of, cardiovascular disease.

Introduction: The 2019 Kidney Disease Outcome Quality Initiative guidelines emphasize the importance of selecting dialysis based on the life expectancy of the patient. However, it is difficult to predict the life expectancy of a patient during arteriovenous fistula creation. We investigated whether neutrophil-to-lymphocyte, monocyte-to-lymphocyte, and platelet-to-lymphocyte ratios measured before dialysis could predict mortality.

Background And Objectives: The outcomes and characteristics of out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA) vary across geographic regions. The etiologies and prognoses of OHCA in Asian populations remain less established. This study aimed to investigate the etiologies and clinical characteristics of patients successfully resuscitated after OHCA and to identify predictors of survival outcomes.

Purpose: Platinum-based chemotherapy is the standard treatment for advanced urothelial carcinoma (aUC). Switch maintenance therapy after first-line (1L) treatment may delay disease progression. This study evaluated pemetrexed as switch maintenance therapy versus observation in aUC patients without disease progression after initial chemotherapy.

Electroencephalography and Anesthetic Depth in Children Under 2 Years of Age: A Prospective Observational Study.

Paediatr Anaesth

December 2024

Department of Anesthesiology and Pain Medicine, Seoul National University Hospital, Seoul National University College of Medicine, Seoul, Republic of Korea.

Background: Processed electroencephalogram (EEG) indices are widely used to monitor anesthetic depth. However, their reliability in children under 2 years of age remains questionable. During anesthesia maintenance in this age group, processed EEG indices frequently exhibit unexpectedly elevated values that exceed the intended target range.

Ligand Inter-Relation Analysis Via Graph Theory Predicts Macrophage Response.

Adv Mater

December 2024

Department of Materials Science and Engineering, Korea University, Seoul, 02841, Republic of Korea.

Graph theory has been widely used to quantitatively analyze complex networks of molecules, materials, and cells. Analyzing the dynamic complex structure of extracellular matrix can predict cell-material interactions but has not yet been demonstrated. In this study, graph theory-based mathematical modeling of RGD ligand graph inter-relation is demonstrated by differentially cutting off RGD-to-RGD interlinkages with flexibly conjugated magnetic nanobars (MNBs) with tunable aspect ratio.

[Guideline for Minimizing Radiation Exposure of Interventionalists during Fluoroscopy-guided Interventional Procedures].

Korean J Gastroenterol

December 2024

Division of Healthcare Research, Clinical Evidence Research, National Evidence-Based Healthcare Collaborating Agency, Seoul, Korea.

As fluoroscopy-guided interventional procedures gain popularity, the associated health threats from radiation exposure to interventionalists during these procedures are increasing. Therefore, an understanding of the potential risks of radiation and careful consideration on minimizing exposure to radiation during the procedures are of paramount importance. The Korean Pancreatobiliary Association has developed a clinical practice guideline to minimize radiation exposure during fluoroscopy-guided interventional procedures.

Background: Complete revascularization has demonstrated better outcomes in patients with acute myocardial infarction (AMI) and multivessel disease. However, in the case of left main (LM) culprit lesion AMI with multivessel disease, there is limited evidence to suggest that complete revascularization is better.

Methods: We reviewed 16,831 patients in the Korea Acute Myocardial Infarction Registry who were treated from July 2016 to June 2020, and 399 patients were enrolled with LM culprit lesion AMI treated with percutaneous coronary intervention.

The native extracellular matrix is continuously remodeled to form complex interconnected network structures that reversibly regulate stem cell behaviors. Both regulation and understanding of its intricate dynamicity can help to modulate numerous cell behaviors. However, neither of these has yet been achieved due to the lack of designing and modeling such complex structures with dynamic controllability.

The management of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) follows a treat-to-target approach, as recommended by guidelines from the American College of Rheumatology (ACR) and the European League Against Rheumatism (EULAR). RA treatment recommendations include an emphasis on frequent disease activity assessments to optimize therapy, recognizing the possibility of timely therapies to slow progression and improve long-term results. The evaluation of joint inflammation, pain, physical function, and clinical indicators is required for comprehensive RA therapy.

Article Synopsis
  • High-intensity statin therapy is effective in reducing mortality and cardiovascular events in patients with atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD), but elderly patients often tolerate moderate-intensity statins better due to intolerance risks.
  • A study compared the incidence of statin-associated muscle symptoms (SAMS) and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) levels in elderly ASCVD patients on either high-intensity statins or moderate-intensity statins combined with ezetimibe.
  • Results showed that combination therapy significantly reduced SAMS (0.7% vs 5.7%) while achieving comparable LDL-C target levels (75.4% vs 68.7%), indicating that moderate-intensity therapy with ezetim
