Mercury (Hg) is a global pollutant of widespread concern, and modern Hg levels have been much elevated compared to pre-industrial levels. The majority of environmental Hg assessment has occurred in the developed world within the temperate region, but recent years we have witnessed increases in research activities in polar, subtropical, and tropical biomes. East Asia is currently the biggest emitter of anthropogenic Hg, while intense research is ongoing in China, Korea, and Japan, relatively little has been done in the neighboring regions.

Microcystin-LRs (MC-LR) produced by harmful cyanobacterial blooms (HCBs) pose significant hepatotoxic risks to both the environment and public health. Despite the identification and characterization of a limited number of MC-LR degrading bacteria, the challenge of safely removing MC-LRs from freshwater systems without disrupting aquatic ecosystems remains substantial. This study focused on the isolation of lactic acid bacteria from Bapshikhe, a traditional Korean fermented food, and investigated the mechanisms underlying the degradation of MC-LRs by these bacteria.

The elemental and isotopic (δCu and δZn) characteristics of 34 AFP samples from 5 paint manufacturers, the isotopic fractionation during the dissolution of AFPs by seawater, and the subsequent adsorption of isotopes onto coastal fine-grained sediments were investigated to identify potential indicators (metal ratios and isotopes). The δCu and δZn values for 34 AFPs could be divided into 2 groups regardless of the type of paint or manufacturer. Dissolution by seawater induced substantial fractionation but δCu and δZn approached the bulk AFP values when the leached fraction increased.

Fine-mode particulate matter (PM) is a highly detrimental air pollutant, regulated without regard for chemical composition and a chief component of wildfire smoke. As wildfire activity increases with climate change, its growing continental influence necessitates multidisciplinary research to examine smoke's evolving chemical composition far downwind and connect chemical composition-based source apportionment to potential health effects. Leveraging advanced real-time speciated PM measurements, including an aerosol chemical speciation monitor in conjunction with source apportionment and health risk assessments, we quantified the stark pollution enhancements during peak Canadian wildfire smoke transport to New York City over June 6-9, 2023.

This study investigated the distributions of heavy metals (Cd, Cu, Hg, Ni, Pb, and Zn) in agricultural soils near coal-fired power plants in Taean and Seocheon, South Korea, considering wind direction and distance from the plants. Additionally, pollution assessment for these heavy metals was conducted using the geoaccumulation index (I) and enrichment factor. Results showed that heavy metal concentrations in the studied soil samples were below Korean environmental criteria for agricultural soil (Cd: 4, Cu: 150, Hg: 4, Ni: 100, Pb: 200, and Zn: 300 mg/kg).

The impacts of glacial retreat on diets of ascidians, one of the filter feeders and a major component of the benthic-pelagic energy pathway, remain unclear. We analyzed carbon and nitrogen stable isotopes of four dominant ascidian species and five potential food sources in Marian Cove, a deglaciating fjord in West Antarctica. Microphytobenthos was a major food source for ascidians regardless of proximity to the glacier, but phytoplankton contribution decreased closer to the glacier.
