Extracellular matrix proteins are associated with metabolically healthy adipose tissue and regulate inflammation, fibrosis, angiogenesis, and subsequent metabolic deterioration. In this study, we demonstrated that transforming growth factor-beta (TGFBI), an extracellular matrix (ECM) component, plays an important role in adipose metabolism and browning during high-fat diet-induced obesity. TGFBI KO mice were resistant to adipose tissue hypertrophy, liver steatosis, and insulin resistance.

The purpose of this study was to determine whether statins can enhance anticancer effects in head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) when used with cisplatin and act as immunogenic cell death (ICD) inducers that can be used in cancer immunotherapy. Statins alone showed both in vitro and in vivo inhibitory effects against HNSCC, and synergistic antitumor effects were observed when combined with cisplatin in a syngeneic murine HNSCC model. Statins increased calreticulin exposure and endoplasmic reticulum stress-related signals in HNSCC cells.

Severe haze episodes occur frequently in the Seoul Metropolitan Area (SMA) and throughout East Asian countries, especially during the winter and early spring. We investigated the sources and chemistry of particulate matter (PM) during three winter haze episodes in Seoul that occurred between January 1st and February 10th in 2017 using a high resolution time-of-flight aerosol mass spectrometer (HR-ToF-AMS) and positive matrix factorization (PMF) analysis. Phosphatidylserine is a membrane phospholipid that is localized to the inner leaflet of the plasma membrane. Phosphatidylserine externalization to the outer leaflet of the plasma membrane is an important signal for various physiological processes, including apoptosis, platelet activation, cell fusion, lymphocyte activation, and regenerative axonal fusion. Stabilin-1 and stabilin-2 are membrane receptors that recognize phosphatidylserine on the cell surface.

Harnessing immune checkpoints in myeloid lineage cells for cancer immunotherapy.

Myeloid lineage immune cells, such as macrophages and dendritic cells, play important roles in the induction of antitumor immunity during the initial stage of the cancer-immunity cycle, eliciting antitumor adaptive immunity by phagocytosing cancer cells and processing cancer-specific antigens, and then presenting these antigens to T cells. During this process, cancer cell phagocytosis can be prevented by inhibitory signals, and the signaling cascades that elicit immune responses against cancer antigens can be inhibited by immunosuppressive myeloid cells in the tumor microenvironment. A number of therapeutic strategies for enhancing cancer cell phagocytosis and promoting antitumor immunity by targeting myeloid lineage cells have recently been developed.

To gain better optical and optoelectrical properties, doping trivalent lanthanide cations into host materials is a very attractive approach in nanoscience. Here, we use a transparent conducting oxide, zinc oxide, as the host material to directly embed trivalent terbium cations without the need for any postgrowth treatment, and we investigate the photophysical effect of the dopant. Trivalent Tb cations embedded in ZnO nanowalls produce hypersensitive green emission (at 545 nm, corresponding to the D → F transition) and convert the emission color of ZnO from yellow into white.

Clinical studies have found that the incidence of cancer metastasis through the lymphatic vessels are 3-5 times higher than that through the blood vessels. These findings suggest the potency of anti-lymphangiogenic therapy in reducing the incidence of cancer metastasis. Previously, we reported LHbisD4, which is the conjugate of low molecular weight heparin (LMWH) and four bis-deoxycholates as a potent anti-angiogenic drug with less toxicity and orally active property.

Here we show that the phosphatidylserine receptor stabilin-2 acts as a membrane protein for myoblast fusion during myogenic differentiation and muscle regeneration.

Assessment of organotin and tin-free antifouling paints contamination in the Korean coastal area.

Twelve organotins (methyl-, octyl-, butyl-, and phenyl-tin), and eight tin-free antifouling paints and their degradation products were measured in marine sediments from the Korean coastal area, and Busan and Ulsan bays, the largest harbor area in Korea. The total concentration of tin-free antifouling paints was two- to threefold higher than the total concentration of organotins. Principal component analysis was used to identify sites with relatively high levels of contamination in the inner bay area of Busan and Ulsan bays, which were separated from the coastal area.

The concentrations and distributions of polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) and their hydroxylated and methoxylated derivatives (OH- and MeO-BDEs) were determined in seven representative fish species from a river in the Republic of Korea. The PBDEs and their derivatives were found to be accumulated in the internal organs of the fish to different extents. PBDEs were preferentially accumulated in the internal organs rather than muscle tissue, and especially, showed increasing accumulation tendencies with increasing bromination level in liver.
