Mutations in the SLC25A38 gene are responsible for the second most common form of congenital sideroblastic anemia (CSA), a severe condition for which no effective treatment exists. We developed and characterized a K562 erythroleukemia cell line with markedly reduced expression of the SLC25A38 protein (A38-low cells). This model successfully recapitulated the main features of CSA, including reduced heme content and mitochondrial respiration, increase in mitochondrial iron, ROS levels and sensitivity to oxidative stress.

Research into the genetic etiology of a neurological disorder can provide directions for genetic diagnosis and targeted therapy. In the past, germline mutations, which are transmitted from parents or newly arise from parental germ cells, were considered as major genetic causes of neurological disorders. However, recent evidence has shown that somatic mutations in the brain, which can arise from neural stem cells during development or over aging, account for a significant number of brain disorders, ranging from neurodevelopmental, neurodegenerative, and neuropsychiatric to neoplastic disease.

Low-cost catalysts with high activity and durability are necessary to achieve efficient large-scale energy conversion in photoelectrochemical cell (PEC) systems. An additional factor that governs the construction of photoelectrodes for PECs is the spatial control of the catalysts for efficient utilization of photogenerated charge carriers. Here, we demonstrate spatial decoupling of the light-absorbing and catalytic components in hierarchically structured Si-based photocathodes for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER).

We have investigated the effects of a directly nanopatterned active layer on the electrical and optical properties of inverted polymer solar cells (i-PSCs). The capillary force in confined molds plays a critical role in polymer crystallization and phase separation of the film. The nanoimprinting process induced improved crystallization and multidimensional chain alignment of polymers for more effective charge transfer and a fine phase-separation between polymers and [6,6]-phenyl-C71-butyric acid methyl ester (PC71BM) to favor exciton dissociation and increase the generation rate of charge transfer excitons.

Nucleoredoxin (NRX) is a member of the thioredoxin family of proteins that controls redox homeostasis in cell. Redox homeostasis is a well-known regulator of cell differentiation into various tissue types. We found that NRX expression levels were higher in white adipose tissue of obese ob/ob mice and increased in the early adipogenic stage of 3T3-L1 preadipocyte differentiation.

This paper proposes a cooperative control strategy in consideration of the force sensitivity of human. The strategy consists of two loops: one is the intention estimation loop whose sampling time can be variable in order to investigate the effect of the sampling time; the other is the position control loop with fixed time step. A high sampling rate is not necessary for the intention estimation loop due to the bandwidth of the mechanoreceptors in humans.

The ability to tune the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO)/highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) levels of fullerene derivatives used as electron acceptors is crucial in controlling the optical/electrochemical properties of these materials and the open circuit voltage (V(oc)) of solar cells. Here, we report a series of indene fullerene multiadducts (ICMA, ICBA, and ICTA) in which different numbers of indene solubilizing groups are attached to the fullerene molecule. The addition of indene units to fullerene raised its LUMO and HOMO levels, resulting in higher V(oc) values in the photovoltaic device.
