The impact of surgery with general anesthesia on cognitive function and putamen volume: a cross-sectional study among older adults.

Background: Previous studies have shown that surgery under general anesthesia may diminish cognitive function; however, the proposed mechanisms need further elucidation. The purpose of the current study was twofold: (1) to compare overall and domain-specific differences in cognitive function between the surgery under general anesthesia group and the control group, and (2) to investigate the possible mechanisms of surgery under general anesthesia affecting cognitive function, using T1-structural magnetic resonance imaging.

Methods: A total of 194 older adults were included in this study.

Correlation analysis of serum miR-145 and miR-210 with carotid artery stenosis and their predictive value for cerebral ischemic events.

Objective: To analyze the significance of serum miR-145 and miR-210 expression levels in the diagnosis of carotid artery stenosis.

Methods: During the same period, 55 healthy individuals who received physical examination in the same hospital were recruited as controls and assigned to a non-stenosis group. Among the included patients, there were 45 cases of mild stenosis, 14 cases of moderate stenosis, and 6 cases of severe stenosis after carotid color Doppler ultrasonography.

Targeting POLRMT by a first-in-class inhibitor IMT1 inhibits osteosarcoma cell growth in vitro and in vivo.

Osteosarcoma (OS) is a highly aggressive form of bone cancer that predominantly affects adolescents and young adults. In this study, we have undertaken an investigation into the potential anti-OS cell activity of IMT1 (inhibitor of mitochondrial transcription 1), a first-in-class inhibitor of RNA polymerase mitochondrial (POLRMT). IMT1 exhibited a profound inhibitory effect on cell survival, proliferation, cell cycle progression, and migration in primary and immortalized OS cells.

High-fructose corn syrup aggravates colitis via microbiota dysbiosis-mediated Th17/Treg imbalance.

Dietary fructose is widely used in beverages, processed foods, and Western diets as food additives, and is closely related to the increased prevalence of multiple diseases, including inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). However, the detailed mechanism by which high fructose disrupts intestinal homeostasis remains elusive. The present study showed that high-fructose corn syrup (HFCS) administration exacerbated intestinal inflammation and deteriorated barrier integrity.

Prospective association of general anesthesia with risk of cognitive decline in a Chinese elderly community population.

As life expectancy increases and the population grows, the number of surgeries performed each year is likely to continue to increase. We evaluated whether surgery with general anesthesia increases risk for cognitive impairment in a Chinese elderly community population. The current data was obtained from the China Longitudinal Aging Study (cohort 1) and Shanghai Brain Aging study (cohort 2).

Reconstruction of the Defect at Temporal Hairline by a Scalp Keystone Island Flap: Clinical Experience on 14 Cases.

Background: The reconstructions of defects at the temporal hairline always require more complicated designs and higher surgical skills to acquire better aesthetic results. By taking advantage of the unique anatomy of the temporal region, the authors designed a scalp keystone island flap pedicled by superficial temporal fascia to repair defects on the temporal hairline.

Methods: The authors retrospectively analyzed the clinical data of 14 patients who had lesions adjacent to the temporal hairline between April 2018 and June 2020.

Perigastric Hyaline-Vascular Variant Castleman's Disease.

Castleman disease (CD) is a rare chronic lymphoproliferative disease with unknown etiology and pathogenesis disease. When the lesion is located in the mediastinum, the diagnosis of CD is easy. However, if the lesion presents as a perigastric mass mimicking other subserosal gastric mesenchymal tumors, the diagnosis can be challenging.

miR-497 inhibits proliferation and invasion in triple-negative breast cancer cells via YAP1.

MicroRNA (miR)-497 has been reported as a tumor suppressor in various cancer types. Nonetheless, the regulation of triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) by miR-497 remains poorly understood. The present study aimed to investigate the potential function and mechanism of miR-497 in TNBC.

Background: The long non-coding RNA HAND2 antisense RNA 1 (HAND2-AS1) acts as a tumor suppressor in several malignancies, but its role in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) remains unknown. In this study, we aimed to investigate the function of HAND2-AS1 in HCC.

Methods: The expression levels of HAND2-AS1 and runt-related transcription factor 2 (RUNX2) were determined in patients with HCC and HCC cell lines using quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction and western blot analyses.
