Background: Approximately half of the patients with advanced pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) receive subsequent lines of chemotherapy. Recently, the liposomal irinotecan (nal-IRI) plus 5-fluorouracil/leucovorin (5-FU/LV) regimen is recommended as subsequent lines of chemotherapy. However, little is known about the predictive factors for the nal-IRI + 5-FU/LV regimen, especially in patients with previous irinotecan (IRI) exposure.

Introduction: This study was conducted to assess the systemic pharmacokinetic profiles of half-dose verteporfin photodynamic therapy (PDT) using concentration data from a previous clinical trial and to subsequently suggest safety precaution guidelines.
Methods: Coefficients for the bi-exponential model were obtained from published data on post-infusion plasma verteporfin concentrations within a period of 0.17-4 h.

Surgical resection of a primary tumor is the only effective curative treatment for patients with localized pancreatic cancer without a distant metastasis. Nevertheless, most patients eventually develop postoperative recurrence caused by micrometastases. The risk increases if a complete resection is not achieved.

Spirometry can play a critical role as a gold standard in the diagnosis and treatment of patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). While the criteria for diagnosis have advanced over time, the Global Initiative for Chronic Obstructive Lung Disease (GOLD) standard of the forced expiratory volume in 1 second/forced vital capacity ratio <0.7 remains the most universally employed metric.

Background: Accurate spirometry interpretation is critical in the diagnosis and management of COPD. With increasing efforts for a unified approach by the Global Lung Function Initiative (GLI), this study evaluated the application of race-specific 2012 GLI and race-neutral 2022 GLI reference equations compared with Choi's reference equations, which are derived and widely used in South Korea, for spirometry interpretation in Northeast Asian patients with COPD.
Research Question: What are the effects of applying race-specific 2012 GLI, race-neutral 2022 GLI, and Choi's reference equations on the diagnosis, severity grade, and clinical outcome associations of COPD?
Study Design And Methods: Serial spirometry data from the Korea COPD Subgroup Study (KOCOSS) consisting of 3,477 patients were used for reanalysis using 2012 GLI, 2022 GLI, and Choi's reference equations.

Background: Human endogenous retroviruses (HERVs) have been implicated in the pathogenesis of various diseases, particularly cancers. Previous investigations from our group demonstrated that targeted knockout (KO) of the HERV-K env gene led to a significant reduction in tumorigenic attributes, including proliferation, migration, and invasion of ovarian cancer cells.
Objective: In this study, we aimed to elucidate the impact of HERV-K env KO on gene expression in ovarian cancer cell lines through comparative RNA sequencing (RNA-Seq) analysis with two distinct HERV-K env KO ovarian cancer cell lines, SKOV3 and OVCAR3.

Purpose: Urothelial carcinoma has various molecular subtypes, each with different tumor characteristics. Although it is known that molecular changes occur during tumor progression, little is known about the specifics of these changes. In this study, we performed transcriptional analysis to understand the molecular changes during tumor progression.

Purpose: To investigate the intraocular concentration profiles of stem cell factor (SCF)/c-KIT, galectin-1 (GAL-1), and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF)-A with regard to retinal disease and treatment response.
Methods: The study group included 13 patients with dry age-related macular degeneration (AMD), 196 with neovascular AMD (nAMD), 21 with diabetic macular edema (DME), 10 with retinal vein occlusion (RVO), and 34 normal subjects with cataracts. Aqueous humor levels of SCF, c-KIT, GAL-1, and VEGF-A were analyzed by immunoassay according to disease group and treatment response.

Background: Whether the ratio of forced expiratory volume in 1 s to forced vital capacity (FEV/FVC) can be used as a biomarker to predict the risk of acute exacerbation of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (AECOPD) is unclear.
Methods: To investigate the predictive role of FEV/FVC for AECOPD, we analyzed data from an observational and multicenter cohort study of 2043 patients with COPD in KOREA. Exposures were post-bronchodilator FEV/FVC and/or percentage predicted FEV (FEV%pred).

This study compared laboratory risk and turn-around time (TAT) between sequence-based typing (SBT) and next-generation sequencing (NGS) for human leukocyte antigen (HLA) typing. For risk assessment, we utilized the risk priority number (RPN) score based on failure mode and effect analysis (FMEA) and a risk acceptability matrix (RAM) according to the Clinical Laboratory Standards Institute (CLSI) guidelines (EP23-A). Total TAT was documented for the analytical phase, and hands-on time was defined as manual processes conducted by medical technicians.

Background: Economic deprivation is expected to influence cancer mortality due to its impact on screening and treatment options, as well as healthy lifestyle. However, the relationship between insurance type, premiums, and mortality rates remains unclear. This study investigated the relationship between insurance type and mortality in patients with newly diagnosed cancer using data from the Korean National Health Insurance Database.

Background: Xerostomia is a pathological condition characterized by decreased salivation due to salivary gland dysfunction and is frequently attributed to irreversible damage as a side effect of radiation therapy. Stem cell-derived organoid therapy has garnered attention as a promising avenue for resolving this issue. However, Matrigel, a hydrogel commonly used in organoid culture, is considered inappropriate for clinical use due to its undefined composition and immunogenicity.
