Aims: The pelvic floor muscle (PFM) training is effective in alleviating the symptoms of urinary incontinence, but there are very few reports available on its long-term effectiveness. Therefore, 8-year follow-up data have been prospectively analyzed.

Aim: It has been suggested that periconceptional intake of folic acid prevents risks of having fetuses afflicted with neural tube defects. We aim to internationally investigate knowledge of the role of folic acid and attitudes toward the life-style of young women of child-bearing age among obstetricians/gynecologists and urologists.
Methods: A questionnaire was sent to obstetricians/gynecologists and urologists residing in Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, North America, Europe, Australia and New Zealand by post or e-mail.

Aim: The efficacy, safety and hospital costs of the tension-free vaginal tape procedure were compared with the pubovaginal sling operation.
Methods: A total of 60 women urodynamically diagnosed as having stress or mixed urinary incontinence were operated on using either the tension-free vaginal tape or pubovaginal sling operation in a prospective manner. Preoperative characteristics of the women were not significantly different for the groups.

Objectives: To evaluate the efficacy of retroperitoneoscopic nephroureterectomy for transitional cell carcinoma of the renal pelvis and ureter, we analyzed the clinical outcomes and long-term cancer control of 89 patients.
Methods: In 36 patients, the kidney was retroperitoneoscopically dissected and the ureteral end was resected with open procedure (combined laparoscopy group). In 53 patients, the ureteral end with a bladder cuff was transected using an endoscopic stapler (pure laparoscopy group).

Aim: To investigate awareness of the role of folic acid in the prevention of neural tube defects, dietary intake of folate, and plasma folate concentration.
Methods: Postal questionnaires were collected from 1190 lay female subjects in three different groups and from seven groups of 3067 health-care providers. Dietary folate was investigated by assessing food frequency charts that were kept for 3 days by 245 women, and plasma folate was assessed by analyzing the blood serum of 194 women.

Objective: The Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare announced that periconceptional consumption of folic acid will reduce risks of having babies afflicted with Neural Tube Defects (NTDs) in the year of 2000. We assessed awareness of the role of folic acid among urologists and a patient group, how urologists give advices on lifestyle to young women, and what lifestyle the patient group currently maintains.
Materials And Methods: A postal questionnaire survey was conducted involving 400 urologists randomly selected and a group of 250 female patients afflicted with NTDS and 250 mothers who had given birth to babies having NTDs during the past 7 years.

Purpose: We followed patients who were stone-free after extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy (ESWL) to investigate the factors that contributed to recurrent calculi.
Materials And Methods: For longer than 5 years 903 patients without residual fragments 3 months after ESWL were enrolled in this study. Plain abdominal films and/or excretory urograms were evaluated every 6 months for recurrent stones on the side of ESWL.

A case of congenital urethral diverticulum is presented. The patient was a 16-year-old boy with the chief complaint of dribbling urine since he was 14 years old. A retrograde urethrogram revealed a diverticulum of the bulbar urethra, which had been produced by a cystic dilation of the Cowper's gland duct.

Between February and November 1994, we performed laparoscopic retroperitoneal adrenalectomy in five patients with benign adrenal tumors to confirm the efficacy of this operation. Using digital dissection and a balloon, we created a working space in the retroperitoneal cavity before we dissected the adrenal gland and removed it under laparoscopic observation. The adrenal glands of all five patients were removed without any complications.

Purpose: We investigated the preliminary surgical results of endoscopic trigonoplasty in pediatric patients with primary vesicoureteral reflux.
Materials And Methods: We performed endoscopic trigonoplasty in 6 pediatric patients (11 refluxing ureters). Reflux was grade II in 4 reno-ureteral units, grade III in 5, grade IV in 1 and grade V in 1 (international classification).

Between April 1993 and August 1995, a Hautmann's ileal neobladder was created in 37 men after total cystectomy for bladder cancer. Ureteroileostomy was performed using a submucosal tunnel instead of the Le-Duc Camey procedure. There was no operative mortality and only a few early complications.

Two patients with nonfunctioning kidney were treated with retroperitoneal laparoscopic nephrectomy. The working space in the retroperitoneum was created by balloon dissector consisted of surgical glove and rigid nephroscope. The balloon dissector inserted to retroperitoneal space was inflated with 500-600 ml normal saline.
