A number of previous studies have reported that 30-50% of patients with colorectal cancer (CRC) harbor Kirsten rat sarcoma viral oncogene homolog (KRAS) mutations, which is a major predictive biomarker of resistance to epidermal growth factor (EGFR)-targeted therapy. Treatment with an anti-EGFR inhibitor is recommended for patients with KRAS wild-type metastatic colorectal cancer (mCRC). A recent retrospective study of cetuximab reported that patients with KRAS p.

Aim: Although infection is the second leading cause of death in maintenance haemodialysis patients, the effects of glycaemic control on infection in diabetic haemodialysis patients have not yet been examined in detail. We examined the relationship between diabetes or glycemic control and infection-related hospitalization (IRH) in haemodialysis patients.

Methods: Patients receiving maintenance haemodialysis (n = 1551, 493 diabetic patients) were enrolled in this prospective cohort study in December 2009 and followed-up for 3 years.

We experienced two cases of acute hepatitis E in Miyazaki Prefecture in the same period. The patients were unknown to each other and did not have any clear causes or common risk factors of hepatitis E virus (HEV) infection. Nucleotide sequences of the HEV isolates revealed that the two isolates were closely related but with different HEV genotype 3 strains.

Objective: The aim of this study was to assess the efficacy of early phase washout rate (early WR) and area under the time-activity curve (AUTAC) by (123)I-metaiodobenzylguanidine (MIBG) dynamic chest imaging for distinguishing Lewy body-related diseases (LBRD) from Parkinson's syndrome (PS) and reducing examination time.

Methods: Sixty-two patients with suspected LBRD who underwent (123)I-MIBG dynamic imaging in early phase were retrospectively selected. The early WR and AUTAC were calculated from (123)I-MIBG dynamic data of the heart.

Background: The adventitia is suggested to contribute to vascular remodeling; however, the site-selective inflammatory responses in association with the development of atherosclerosis remain to be elucidated.

Methods And Results: Wild-type or apolipoprotein E knockout male C57BL/6J background mice were fed standard chow for 16, 32, and 52 weeks, and the morphology of the aortic arch, descending aorta, and abdominal aorta was compared. Atheromatous plaque formation progressed with age, particularly in the aortic arch and abdominal aorta but not in the descending aorta.

We assessed acute myocardial infarction (AMI) with cardiac rupture in an autopsy using magnetic resonance (MR) imaging in vitro and histological staining. Cardiac MR imaging in vitro generated high resolution images of myocardial thinning, rupture, and epicardial hemorrhage. High signal intensity (SI) on T(1) weighted images (WI) and low SI on T(2)WI of the rupture site corresponded with acute myocardial necrosis, edema, and hemorrhage.

Venous thrombus is subsequently organized and replaced by fibrous connective tissue. However, the sequential changes in venous thrombi are not reliably detected by current noninvasive diagnostic techniques. The purpose of this study is to reveal whether magnetic resonance (MR) can detect venous thrombus, define thrombus age and predict thrombolytic responses.

The quality control of liquid-crystal display (LCD) monitors has become one of the important topics for maintaining reliable soft-copy readings in the interpretation of diagnostic images. In this paper, the effects of correction in the luminance measurement of an LCD monitor by use of a telescopic-type luminance meter were investigated. The luminance of the LCD monitor in different ambient-lighting conditions was measured and compared to the results obtained with no ambient lighting (0 lux).

Rationale And Objectives: Atherothrombosis usually occurs on macrophage- and lipid-rich unstable plaque, but rarely on smooth muscle cell (SMC)-rich stable plaque. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) has been extensively applied for noninvasive vascular imaging. We therefore investigated whether MRI provides valuable information about the characteristics of atherosclerotic vessels using rabbit models of macrophage-rich or SMC-rich atherosclerotic arteries.

We previously reported that monotherapy with carbapenem or cefepime exhibited efficacy equivalent to cefepime plus an aminoglycoside as initial therapy for febrile neutropenia (FN), achieving an adequate response in two-thirds of the patients. However, only one-third of the remaining poor responders to monotherapy became afebrile after an aminoglycoside was added to the initial carbapenem or cefepime. The present study was designed to evaluate the benefit of intravenous ciprofloxacin for neutropenic patients with fever who were refractory to initial therapy given for the first 3 days.
