Biological false-positive reactions to non-treponemal syphilis tests occur under various conditions, including in patients with infectious mononucleosis. However, false-positive treponemal test results are rarely reported. We present three cases of Epstein-Barr virus-associated infectious mononucleosis that exhibited concurrent false-positive results in both treponemal and non-treponemal tests, effectively imitating syphilis serology.

Epithelioid angiomyolipoma (EAML) is a rare variant of AML with malignant potential. It is occasionally difficult to distinguish EAML from renal cell carcinoma (RCC) on imaging. A 72-year-old woman was admitted to our hospital for the treatment of a left renal tumor with relatively high blood flow and a tumor thrombus extending to the inferior vena cava, suggesting RCC.

Pilocytic astrocytomas (PAs) are benign tumors. However, clinically aggressive PAs despite benign histology have been reported, and histological and molecular risk factors for prognosis have not been elucidated. 38 PAs were studied for clinical, histological, and molecular factors, including tumor location, extent of resection, post-operative treatment, glioma-associated molecules (IDH1/2, ATRX, BRAF, FGFR1, PIK3CA, H3F3A, p53, VEGF, Nestin, PD-1/PD-L1), CDKN2A/B deletion, and chromosomal number aberrations, to see if there is any correlation with patient's progression-free survival (PFS).

A 59-year-old man developed diabetes at 24 years old and underwent hemodialysis at 42 years old. At 54 years old, cardiac dysfunction with left ventricular hypertrophy was detected, followed by complete atrioventricular block at 57 years old. The patient was diagnosed with mitochondrial disease based on a myocardial biopsy and the presence of a mitochondrial DNA mutation (3243A>G).

The prognosis of aggressive adult T-cell leukemia/lymphoma (ATL) is poor, and allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (allo-HSCT) is a curative treatment. In order to identify favorable prognostic patients after intensive chemotherapy, and who therefore might not require upfront allo-HSCT, we aimed to improve risk stratification of aggressive ATL patients aged <70 years. The clinical risk factors and genetic mutations were incorporated into risk modeling for overall survival (OS).

Background: SwiftScan single-photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) is a recently released scanning technique with data acquired when the detector is stationary and when it moves from one view to the next. The influence of scan time for using SwiftScan on quantitative bone SPECT remains unclear. This study aimed to clarify the effect of the scan time for SwiftScan SPECT on the image quality and quantification of bone SPECT compared to step and shoot mode (SSM) using Tc-filled anthropomorphic phantom (SIM bone phantom).

Background: It is estimated that approximately 50% of patients with hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection in Japan are currently over 75 years old. However, patients aged ≥ 75 years are typically underrepresented in clinical trials of direct-acting antivirals. This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy and safety of glecaprevir and pibrentasvir (G/P) treatment in Japanese patients with HCV infection aged ≥ 75 years.

A retrospective chart survey of the clinical features of indolent adult T-cell leukemia/lymphoma (ATL) was conducted in the Miyazaki Prefecture, Japan. This study enrolled 24 smoldering-type ATLs, 10 favorable chronic-type ATLs, and 20 unfavorable chronic-type ATLs diagnosed between 2010 and 2018. Among them, 4, 3, and 10 progressed to acute-type ATLs during their clinical course.

Although Mobitz type II atrioventricular block is typically an arrhythmia arising from a permanent organic disorder of the His-Purkinje system, reversible factors should also be considered. Here, we report the association between a rare reversible Mobitz type II atrioventricular block and antipsychotic medication in a 75-year-old patient with schizophrenia.

Portal vein thrombosis is one of the most serious complications after liver transplantation. It is important to determine the age of the thrombus for management of portal vein thrombosis. We present a case report of histologically confirmed heterogenous fresh portal vein thrombus which was depicted heterogenous high signal intensity on magnetic resonance diffusion weighted imaging.

The Japanese Clinical Practice Guidelines for Management of Sepsis and Septic Shock 2020 (J-SSCG 2020), a Japanese-specific set of clinical practice guidelines for sepsis and septic shock created as revised from J-SSCG 2016 jointly by the Japanese Society of Intensive Care Medicine and the Japanese Association for Acute Medicine, was first released in September 2020 and published in February 2021. An English-language version of these guidelines was created based on the contents of the original Japanese-language version. The purpose of this guideline is to assist medical staff in making appropriate decisions to improve the prognosis of patients undergoing treatment for sepsis and septic shock.
