Article Synopsis
  • Researchers found that the Fibrosis-3 (FIB-3) index can accurately predict liver fibrosis progression in patients with metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD), regardless of age.
  • In a study of 1,398 patients, the FIB-3 index performed as well as the Fibrosis-4 (FIB-4) index for those under 60, but outperformed it for patients aged 60 and older.
  • The FIB-3 index’s effectiveness suggests it could be a more reliable tool for assessing liver fibrosis than existing methods, enhancing diagnosis across different age groups.

Article Synopsis
  • The study redefines nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) as metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD), analyzing its prognosis through a multicenter study involving 1,398 patients.
  • Approximately 99% of the patients were diagnosed with MASLD, showing that those without cardiometabolic risk factors had a significantly lower body mass index (BMI) and less severe liver histology.
  • The prognosis for patients with MASLD remained similar to previous findings for NAFLD, with most deaths attributed to extrahepatic cancers and liver-related complications being less common among those without metabolic risks.

Introduction: The plate fixation for anterior cervical discectomy and fusion (ACDF) has become increasingly widespread for facilitating early mobilization and improving fusion rate. However, apart from multilevel operations, there is still some controversy over its use for single-level ACDF. This retrospective study has compared the reoperation rates after single-level ACDFs performed at our institution between the procedures with and without plate fixation.

  • Several case reports indicate that patients with IgD multiple myeloma (MM) may successfully stop hemodialysis, although specific predictive factors have not been established.
  • A 57-year-old Japanese woman with renal issues from IgD-λ multiple myeloma underwent bortezomib-based chemotherapy and was able to withdraw from hemodialysis after 50 days.
  • This review suggests that younger age and starting bortezomib-based treatment early could be key indicators for successfully stopping hemodialysis in similar patients.

  • Finger trembling is a key symptom of Hirayama disease, and while conservative treatment is usually suggested, surgery may be necessary in some cases, though information on recovery post-surgery is limited.
  • A case study of a 26-year-old woman with significant finger trembling and other symptoms led to an MRI and CT myelogram, revealing specific spinal cord issues, ultimately resulting in anterior cervical discectomy and fusion surgery.
  • Post-surgery, the patient's finger trembling improved, supporting the idea that restoring proper spinal cord posture and cerebrospinal fluid dynamics can aid recovery, despite finger trembling being an unusual indicator of recovery outcomes.

Background: Eosinophilic granulomatosis with polyangiitis (EGPA) is an anti-neutrophil antibody (ANCA)-associated necrotizing vasculitis, which predominantly affects small to medium vessels, and is associated with asthma and eosinophilia. EGPA has two different pathogenic aspects: eosinophilic granulomatous inflammation and ANCA-associated inflammation. A recent histological study of peripheral nerves showed that not only ANCA-associated inflammation but also eosinophil-associated vascular occlusion leads to ischemia.
