Novel bis(dipyrrinato)zinc(ii) derivatives having 4-[bis(2,4,6-trimethylphenyl)boryl]phenyl (ZnBph) or 4-[bis(2,4,6-trimethylphenyl)boryl]-2,3,5,6-tetramethylphenyl groups (ZnBdu) at the 5-position of the dipyrrinato ligands were designed and synthesized. In ZnBph with the smaller dipyrrinate-arylene and arylene-dimesitylboryl dihedral angles, an intramolecular charge transfer arising from the presence of the vacant p orbital on the boron atom participates in the ππ* excited state in character in contrast to the pure ππ* excited state of ZnBdu. The synergistic ππ*/ILCT excited state was weakly fluorescent, and the fluorescence was enhanced upon binding of fluoride to the boron atom.

Two reaction conditions were developed to accomplish the substrate switchable Suzuki-Miyaura coupling of benzyl derivatives and arylboronic acid derivatives. Under conditions for esters, benzyl esters such as carbonates and acetates reacted with arylboronic acids to afford the corresponding diarylmethanes. However, the benzyl halides did not react under the same conditions.

The copolymer of 3-hexylthiophene (3HT) and fluorene (F) was directly grafted onto chitin and chitosan using FeCl as an oxidant. The properties of the grafted chitin/chitosan were characterized by Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy, UV-Vis spectroscopy, fluorescence spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction analysis, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), transmission electron microscopy-energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, and quantum yield measurements. The UV-Vis absorption peaks of the chitin/chitosan grafted with 3-hexylthiophene and fluorene copolymer were increasingly blue-shifted upon increasing the fluorene content and the red-shifted emission of the grafted chitin/chitosan were controlled by varying the monomers feed of the 3HT/F units.
