Regulatory activities of 2 beta-(3-hydroxypropoxy)-1 alpha, 25-dihydroxyvitamin D3 [ED-71], a novel synthetic vitamin D3 derivative, on calcium metabolism were investigated. The compound behaved similar to 1 alpha, 25-dihydroxyvitamin D3 [1,25(OH)2D3] in the ex vivo intestinal calcium transport using rat everted gut sac and the in vivo bone mobilization using vitamin D-deficient rats. By means of Raisz's assay method, 45Ca releasing activity of ED-71 was not greater than that of 1,25(OH)2D3.

Endogenous 1 alpha,25-dihydroxyvitamin D3 [1,25-(OH)2D3] in normal rat skin was identified by using thermal isomerization to convert the metabolite into its pre-isomer, high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) and displacement potency with a chick intestinal cytosol receptor. When the metabolite in normal rat skin was determined by a radioreceptor assay after purification by Sep-Pak silica cartridge column chromatography and HPLC, the concentration was 71.0 +/- 6.

Plasma levels of vitamin D-binding protein (DBP) and vitamin D metabolites in patients with decompensated and compensated liver cirrhosis were assayed. Plasma levels of DBP in the decompensated group were significantly lower than those in the compensated group, but both were lower than the normal range. The plasma levels of 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25-OH-D) and 1 alpha,25-dihydroxyvitamin D [1,25(OH)2D] in the compensated group were within the respective normal ranges, whereas both values in the decompensated group were significantly lower than those in the compensated group.

Concentrations of 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25-OH-D), 24,25-dihydroxyvitamin D [24,25(OH)2D], and 1 alpha,25-dihydroxyvitamin D [1,25(OH)2D] in bone marrow and serum of patients with leukemia and normal subjects were assayed. There were highly significant correlations between the bone marrow and serum concentrations of the respective vitamin D metabolites. Especially, the concentrations of 25-OH-D and 1,25(OH)2D in the bone marrow gave very similar values to those in serum.

The light transmission properties of films containing titanium dioxide or tartrazine alone as colourant were not always satisfactory. The tartrazine system exhibited superior light transmission properties to the titanium dioxide system at all additive concentrations.

There are few papers on the analysis of Ge in biomaterials. A highly sensitive method is required for such determination of Ge because its concentration is very low. We developed a sensitive analytical method for determining Ge in biomaterials by using 0.

The effects of serotonin (5-HT) on plasma glucose levels were studied. 5-HT above 20 mg/kg induced apparent hypoglycemia in mice. The hypoglycemic effects of 5-HT were strongly antagonized by methysergide but only partially inhibited by ketanserin.

The effects of tryptamine on blood glucose levels were studied. Tryptamine induced significant hypoglycemia in mice. The hypoglycemia elicited by tryptamine was strongly antagonized by methysergide, an antagonist of both 5-HT1 and 5-HT2 receptors.

We have previously reported that naturally occurring sulfated glycosaminoglycans having a chondroitin-type structure and glycosaminoglycan polysulfate (GAGPS, a persulfated derivative of chondroitin sulfate) caused a specific stimulation of hyaluronic acid synthesis in rabbit knee synovial membranes [H. A purification method has been developed for chick 28,000 Mr vitamin D-dependent calcium-binding protein, involving Blue Sepharose CL-6B column chromatography, heat treatment and chromatofocusing with a microparticulate anion exchanger (Mono P). It allowed the rapid and reproducible purification of milligram amounts of homogeneous calcium-binding protein with good yields from chick intestine, kidney and cerebellum. The calcium-binding proteins thus obtained have the same molecular weight of 28,000, heat stability, calcium binding capability and apparent isoelectric point of 4.

The simultaneous analysis of the molecular weight and concentration of hyaluronic acid in biological samples using high-performance liquid chromatography with two gel permeation columns is described. The elution volumes of various molecular weights of hyaluronic acids were linearily related to the logarithms of their molecular weights up to 600,000. The concentration of hyaluronic acid could be determined in the range from 20 to 100 micrograms/ml, i.

Comparative studies of 11 beta-, 18-, and 19-hydroxylation activities of 11-deoxycorticosterone (DOC) by bovine adrenal mitochondria revealed that an appreciable level of hydroxylation rate was observed in 19-hydroxylation (0.32 nmol/min/mg mitochondrial protein), as well as in 11 beta- and 18-hydroxylations (4.7 and 0.

The effects of tryptamine on behaviour were studied in five strains of mice. There were significant strain differences in the intensity of the 5-HT syndrome (head weaving and hindlimb abduction) and head twitch responses. The intensity of the 5-HT syndrome correlated significantly with the brain tryptamine content, although the occurrence of head twitch was unrelated.

From the whole plants of Corydalis tashiroi Makino a new quaternary protoberberinium base dehydrodiscretamine chloride was isolated along with four known quaternary alkaloids by the application of droplet countercurrent chromatography (DCCC). The structure of the new base was established by spectral and chemical evidence. Eight known tertiary alkaloids were also isolated from the same plant.
