Neural stem cells (NSCs) can give rise to both neurons and glia, but the regulatory mechanisms governing their differentiation transitions remain incompletely understood. Here, we address the role of cyclin-dependent kinase inhibitors (CDKIs) in the later stages of dorsal cortical development. We find that the CDKIs p18 and p27 are upregulated at the onset of astrocyte generation.

Background: Platinum/taxane (TC) chemotherapy with debulking surgery stays the mainstay of the treatment in ovarian cancer patients with peritoneal metastasis, and recently its novel modality, intraperitoneal carboplatin with dose-dense paclitaxel (ddTCip), was shown to have greater therapeutic impact. Nevertheless, the response varies among patients and consequent recurrence, or relapse often occurs. Discovery of therapeutic response predictor to ddTCip and/or TC therapy is eagerly awaited to improve the treatment outcome.

Article Synopsis
  • Positional vertebrobasilar ischemia, or Bow hunter stroke, happens when the vertebral artery is compressed, often leading to symptoms like near syncope during head movements.
  • The patient, a 61-year-old man, experienced near loss of consciousness when turning his head left, and tests showed significant issues like total occlusion of the left subclavian artery and abnormal blood flow in the vertebral arteries.
  • After diagnosing these problems, an axillary-axillary bypass surgery was performed, successfully restoring proper blood flow in the left vertebral artery post-surgery.

A cytokine storm induces acute respiratory distress syndrome, the main cause of death in coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) patients. However, the detailed mechanisms of cytokine induction due to severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) remain unclear. To examine the cytokine production in COVID-19, we mimicked the disease in SARS-CoV-2-infected alveoli by adding the lysate of SARS-CoV-2-infected cells to cultured macrophages or induced pluripotent stem cell-derived myeloid cells.

Article Synopsis
  • A 67-year-old woman with abdominal pain was treated after complications from previous ovarian cancer surgery, which had left her with potential adhesions.
  • Imaging revealed a blockage of the small intestine and blood clots in her right femoral vein, leading to a surgical intervention.
  • During surgery, it was found that her ileum was caught in a gap caused by earlier lymph node removal, and the solution involved cutting the affected vein without reconstruction, resulting in a successful recovery.

Objective: Concurrent chemoradiotherapy using cisplatin was thought to be standard treatment for squamous cell carcinoma of cervix, but it had not been effective for adenocarcinoma. Concurrent chemoradiotherapy using irinotecan hydrochloride (CPT-11) had been effective for colorectal cancer, thus, we chose CPT-11 as a candidate for gynecologic adenocarcinoma. To evaluate the maximum tolerated dose (MTD) of weekly CPT-11 with external pelvic radiotherapy, a phase 1/2 study was conducted according to modified Fibonacci method.

Gastrointestinal (GI) bleeding is an emergency medical condition that leads to hemorrhagic shock or circulatory instability if left untreated. A mainstay for treating GI bleeding is endoscopic therapy; more than 90% of GI bleeding can be staunched by endoscopic hemostasis. However, patients with unstable hemodynamics or GI bleeding that cannot be controlled by endoscopy require transcatheter embolization or surgical intervention.
