Since 1991, we gave anesthesia to 155 patients with halo vest. All of 128 whose airways could be kept patent by laryngeal mask airway (LMA) were successfully intubated fiberoptically via LMA using the tube exchange catheter under general anesthesia. Four patients developed airway obstruction during the induction of anesthesia, two of whom were awakened and subsequently intubated by awake fiberoptic intubation.

Background And Study Aims: Photodynamic therapy (PDT) has proved effective in the treatment of gastric cancer, but there is room for improvement. To achieve the technical goal of carrying out endoscopic PDT, endoscopists need to determine the precise area for laser irradiation at adequate dosages. This report describes the use of a shapememory alloy (SMA) loop snare as a useful tool in endoscopic PDT.

Study Design: The correlation between preoperative and postoperative lateral functional radiograms and clinical results was analyzed in 74 cases of myelopathy treated by anterior cervical fusion.

Objectives: To clarify the correlation between clinical results and radiologic findings (developmental and dynamic stenosis).

Summary Of Background Data: Although radiologic changes have been reported at the disc level adjacent to anterior cervical fusion, the question of whether these radiologic findings affect the clinical results of anterior fusion has not been resolved.

Atlantoaxial dislocation. A follow-up study of surgical results.

Spine (Phila Pa 1976)

April 1997

Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, Kobe National Hospital, Japan.

Study Design: The cases of 47 patients with atlantoaxial dislocation exclusive of rheumatoid arthritis, cerebral palsy, and tumors as causative pathologies were reviewed after surgical treatment, which was performed between 1979 and 1993.

Objectives: To investigate the surgical results of atlantoaxial dislocation itself without any systemic factors affected by rheumatoid arthritis, cerebral palsy, and tumors.

Methods: Neck pain (or occipitalgia) and extent of myelopathy at follow-up evaluation were compared with that present before surgery.

To investigate the usefulness of an intravascular ultrasound (IVUS)-bearing balloon catheter, we analyzed results in 17 patients with 19 lesions who underwent percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty (PTCA) with IVUS-bearing balloon catheters (group A) and 25 patients with 28 lesions who underwent PTCA without IVUS (group B). The patients had angina pectoris with or without old myocardial infarction. The success rate (less than 50% residual stenosis on coronary angiography) in group A was 17/17 patients (100%) and 19/19 lesions (100%), and that in group B was 21/25 patients (84%) and 24/28 lesions (86%) (NS).

[Capsaicin-induced corneal epithelial changes in rats].

Nippon Ganka Gakkai Zasshi

September 1996

Department of Ophthalmology, Kobe National Hospital, Hyogo ken, Japan.

To elucidate the mechanisms by which corneal sensory denervation causes corneal epithelial disorders, we investigated corneal epithelial changes in rats injected with capsaicin, which is known to desensitize the primary sensory neurons. Neonatal rats were injected with capsaicin (100 mg/kg) or only the vehicle as a control on the 2nd day after birth. Corneas were excised after 7-28 days and subjected to gold chloride staining.
