Immunosuppressants are widely used to treat patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA), and their adverse effects have been known to cause other iatrogenic immunodeficiency-associated lymphoproliferative disorders (OIIA-LPDs). We report a patient with RA who had been treated with methotrexate (MTX) and tacrolimus (TAC) and who developed whole body lymphadenopathy. We simultaneously confirmed angioimmunoblastic T-cell lymphoma (AITL) through a right cervical lymph node biopsy and Epstein-Barr virus-positive B-cell lymphoproliferative disorder (EBV-positive B-LPD) through a bone marrow examination.

Predictive model of bosentan-induced liver toxicity in Japanese patients with pulmonary arterial hypertension.

Can J Physiol Pharmacol

Laboratory of Clinical Pharmaceutical Science, Kobe Pharmaceutical University, 4-19-1 Motoyama-kitamachi, Higashinada, Kobe 658-8558, Japan.

Bosentan, an endothelin receptor antagonist, has been widely used as a first-line medication for the treatment of pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH). It has been shown to improve symptoms of hypertension, exercise capacity, and hemodynamics and prolong time to clinical worsening. However, liver dysfunction is a major side effect of bosentan treatment that could hamper the optimal management of patients with PAH.

Bosentan, an endothelin receptor antagonist, has been widely used as a first-line drug for the treatment of pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH). In addition, bosentan is approved for patients with digital ulcers related to systemic sclerosis. Liver dysfunction is a major adverse effect of bosentan and may lead to discontinuation of therapy.

Twenty-one sides of 11 adult Japanese cadavers were investigated, and 2 of 21 sides exhibited absence of the pyramidalis. We observed that all of the nerves to the pyramidalis included the sensory nerve branch, which distributed to the aponeurotic tissue in the upper area of the pubic ramus. To investigate the clinical relevance and developmental process of the pyramidalis, detailed innervation patterns of the pyramidalis and the lumber plexus were examined and compared with the case of absent pyramidalis.

One hundred years has passed since the appearance of the first article on Alzheimer's disease (AD), by Alois Alzheimer. AD is the most common form of dementia, accounting for over 50% of all dementia and affecting more than 26 million people worldwide. Since the 1980s, the pace of research into the nature of AD has greatly accelerated, and investigators currently believe that it will become possible to treat or prevent AD, which is a major socioeconomic concern in all developed countries of the world.

Effects of insulin and amyloid β(1-42) oligomers on glucose incorporation and mitochondrial function in cultured rat hippocampal neurons.

Geriatr Gerontol Int

October 2011

Department of General medicine, Kobe Graduate School of Medicine, Kobe University, Kobe Center for the Comprehensive Care and Research on Memory Disorders, National Center for Geriatrics and Gerontology, Obu, Japan.

Aim: The molecular basis for impaired glucose metabolism in patients with Alzheimer's disease (AD) has not been fully clarified. We tested whether insulin and amyloid (A)β(1-42) oligomers would regulate glucose metabolism and energy homeostasis directly in cultured rat hippocampal neurons and evaluated possible interactions between insulin signaling and Aβ(1-42) oligomers.

Methods: Dissociated hippocampal neurons were prepared from Wistar rat embryos at day 21 of gestation and cultured for 14days.

Reconstruction of the intercostal arteries with small-branched grafts in patients with thoracoabdominal or descending aortic aneurysms.

Multimed Man Cardiothorac Surg

January 2007

Division of Cardiovascular, Thoracic, and Pediatric Surgery, Department of Cardio-Pulmonary and Vascular Medicine, Kobe Graduate School of Medicine, 7-5-2 Kusunoki-cho, Chuo-ku, Kobe 650-0017, Japan.

An extent II thoracoabdominal aortic aneurysm of 60 mm diameter was exposed through the left 6(th) intercostal space and retroperitoneal approach. The partial cardiopulmonary bypass was initiated through the femoral arterial and venous cannulation. A knitted Dacron graft of 22 mm with four spatially orientated branches for the abdominal viscera and five branches for the intercostal arteries was utilized.

Diabetes Mellitus is thought as the presymptomatic stage to cause various vascular diseases. From the point of view that diabetes is already a disease, this paper discusses the prevention of the manifestation of diabetes in the elderly. STOP-NIDDM study demonstrated that acarbose, an alpha-glucosidase inhibitor, reduced the onset of diabetes in impaired glucose tolerance (IGT) subjects by 24%.

Polymorphism of the regulatory region of the presenilin-2 gene in sporadic Alzheimer's disease: a case-control study.

J Neurol Sci

January 2006

Department of Psychiatry and Neurology, Kobe Graduate School of Medicine, 7-5-1, Kusunoki-cho, Chuo-ku, Kobe, and Hyogo Institute of Aging Brain and Cognitive Disorders, Himeji Brain and Heart Center, Japan.

Objective: presenilin-2 is one of the causative genes for familial Alzheimer's disease, and the apolipoprotein E epsilon4 allele is a major genetic risk factor for late-onset and sporadic early-onset Alzheimer's disease. Polymorphism of the regulatory region of presenilin-2 has recently been reported to be associated with sporadic Alzheimer's disease in a Russian population. The purpose of this study was to determine whether Alzheimer's disease is associated with the presenilin-2 gene polymorphism and the apolipoprotein E genotype in an extended case-control study.

Background: Resistance to radiation and chemotherapy is a significant obstacle to the treatment of advanced bladder cancer. Gene therapy combined with radiation represents a new approach to cancer treatment. In the present study, we investigated whether adenovirally directed, cytosine deaminase (CD)/5-fluorocytosine (5-FC) gene therapy could induce cell toxicity and radiosensitization through the intracellular production of 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) in bladder-cancer cells.
