Meals comprising a staple grain, a main, and side dishes (SMS meals) promote good dietary intake, yet limited studies have examined their multifactorial relationship with dietary intake. We investigated how demographic characteristics, lifestyle, and dietary habits affect the relationship between SMS meal frequency and nutrient intake adequacy. This cross-sectional study analyzed survey data from 331 Japanese adults (208 men and 123 women) aged 30-69 years in February 2019.

Probability overestimation induced by icon arrays.

In decision making under risk, where the consequences of choices vary depending on specific probabilities, a proper interpretation of the presented probabilities is essential. However, because people are not good at evaluating numerical values, such as percentages, efforts have been made to accurately convey presented probabilities using visual aids represented by icon arrays. However, previous studies have suggested that icon arrays produce an overestimation of probabilities under specific conditions.

Relationship between cleaning frequency and pressure ulcer healing time in older people receiving home care.

Objective: The relationship between the healing time of pressure ulcers (PUs) and wound cleaning frequency among older people in homecare settings was investigated.

Method: This single-centre, prospective cohort study was conducted from April 2018 to March 2019. Patients who used home-visit nursing services, had National Pressure Ulcer Advisory Panel classification stage 2 PUs, and had their wounds cleaned at least twice a week were enrolled in the study.

Effect of Orally Ingested Water Containing H-Filled Ultrafine Bubbles (UFBs) on Ethanol-Induced Oxidative Stress in Rats.

Ultrafine bubbles (UFBs), which are bubbles with diameters of less than 1 µm, are widely recognized for their ability to exist stably in liquid as a result of the effects of Brownian motion. In this study, we focused on hydrogen, known for its antioxidant potential, and explored the function of H-filled UFBs, which encapsulate hydrogen, to determine their potential use as oral carriers for the delivery bioactive gases to living organisms. To this end, rats were orally administered ethanol to induce hepatic oxidative stress, and the effects of drinking H-filled UFBs (H NanoGAS) water for two weeks were evaluated to assess the reduction of oxidative stress.

Effects of motor imagery using virtual reality on pain sensitivity and affect in healthy individuals: a prospective randomized crossover study.

Objective: Exercise induces a hypoalgesic response and improves affect. However, some individuals are unable to exercise for various reasons. Motor imagery, involving kinesthetic and visual imagery without physical movement, activates brain regions associated with these benefits and could be an alternative for those unable to exercise.

Quantification of cerebrospinal fluid tumor DNA in lung cancer patients with suspected leptomeningeal carcinomatosis.

Cerebrospinal fluid tumor-derived DNA (CSF-tDNA) analysis is a promising approach for monitoring the neoplastic processes of the central nervous system. We applied a lung cancer-specific sequencing panel (CAPP-Seq) to 81 CSF, blood, and tissue samples from 24 lung cancer patients who underwent lumbar puncture (LP) for suspected leptomeningeal disease (LMD). A subset of the cohort (N = 12) participated in a prospective trial of osimertinib for refractory LMD in which serial LPs were performed before and during treatment.

External validation and updating of the infusion rate individualization of soybean oil-based intravenous lipid emulsion: A descriptive cohort study.

Background: Safe and efficient provision of intravenous lipid emulsion (ILE) requires a strategy to individualize infusion rates. Estimating the maximum acceptable infusion rate (MaxInfRate) of soybean oil-based ILE (SO-ILE) in individuals by using a triglyceride (TG) kinetic model was reported to be feasible. In this study, we aimed to externally validate and, if needed, update the MaxInfRate estimation.

Recently, we showed that activated astrocytes and microglial cells are present in the spinal cord of CPSP model mice. Activated glial cells exacerbate cerebral ischemic pathology by increasing the expression of inflammatory factors.

A decision tree algorithm to identify predictors of post-stroke complex regional pain syndrome.

This prospective cohort study aimed to identify the risk factors for post-stroke complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS) using a decision tree algorithm while comprehensively assessing upper limb and lower limb disuse and physical inactivity. Upper limb disuse (Fugl-Meyer assessment of upper extremity [FMA-UE], Action Research Arm Test, Motor Activity Log), lower limb disuse (Fugl-Meyer Assessment of lower extremity [FMA-LE]), balance performance (Berg balance scale), and physical inactivity time (International Physical Activity Questionnaire-Short Form [IPAQ-SF]) of 195 stroke patients who visited the Kishiwada Rehabilitation Hospital were assessed at admission. The incidence of post-stroke CRPS was 15.

Prognostic value of electroneurography using the midline method for predicting the development of synkinesis after peripheral facial palsy.

Objective: The prognostic value of electroneurography (ENoG) for predicting the incidence of synkinesis is reportedly about 40 % using the formal standard method (ENoG-SM). However, the prognostic value of ENoG using the newly developed midline method (ENoG-MM) has not been determined. The aim of this study was to demonstrate the optimal prognostic value and advantages of ENoG-MM for predicting the incidence of synkinesis.

Pathogenic variants in WDR45 on chromosome Xp11 cause neurodegenerative disorder beta-propeller protein-associated neurodegeneration (BPAN). Currently, there is no effective therapy for BPAN. Here we report a 17-year-old female patient with BPAN and show that antisense oligonucleotide (ASO) was effective in vitro.

Purpose: This study assessed the pain associated with movement and exercise in older individuals with cognitive decline, using the Abbey Pain Scale (APS) to identify the sub-items that effectively reflect pain during such activities.

Patients And Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted in 225 older patients with musculoskeletal disorders and cognitive decline at the Ikeda Rehabilitation Hospital in Toyama, Japan. Pain during walking or transferring was assessed using the verbal rating scale (VRS) and the APS.

Guidelines for assistive technology service provision - A scoping review.

Purpose: Despite the high unmet need for effective AT provision, multiple service delivery models across different countries, and a shortage of personnel trained in this field, no widely useable and accepted Assistive Technology (AT) service provision guidelines currently exist. This review aims to provide an overview of the literature regarding AT service provision guidelines to inform the development of globally useable AT provision guidance, aligned with contemporary global initiatives to improve access to AT.

Maximum abdominal excursion assessment using an abdominal excursion measuring device: Reliability and validity of a new device for simple and quantitative assessment of respiratory function.

This study aimed to verify the reliability and validity of abdominal expansion and respiratory function measurements. Forty healthy adult males underwent lung capacity, effort lung capacity, respiratory muscle strength, cough strength, diaphragm ultrasound, and abdominal expansion measurements. Abdominal expansion was measured using a device developed to accurately evaluate abdominal movements and calculate maximum abdominal expansion on the ventral side (AE-max: the difference between maximal abdominal contraction at the same time as maximal-effort expiration and maximal abdominal expansion at the same time as maximal-effort inspiration).
