  • Fan therapy is a non-drug method that helps alleviate shortness of breath in terminally ill patients by directing airflow on one side of their face.
  • A scoping review was conducted to explore existing studies on fan therapy, focusing on its safety and methods, as there have been no comprehensive reviews specific to critically ill patients in intensive care units.
  • Out of 685 initial studies, 15 were included in the review, with most focusing on patients with terminal cancer and chronic lung diseases, indicating that fan therapy is generally safe and beneficial, although its application in critically ill patients remains unstudied.

The aim of this study was to clarify the differences perceived by users of home-visit nursing care between providers from medical institutions and services from independent home-visit nursing stations, as well as to examine the recovery orientation from the perspectives of the users. We conducted a questionnaire survey of 32 home-visit nursing stations and 18 medical institutions. From these facilities, 10 users of psychiatric home-visit nursing services who were being treated for schizophrenia and bipolar disorder were selected.

Psychiatric home-visit nursing supports the lives of people with mental disorders in the community and plays an important role in the "community-based integrated care system" which is rapidly being implemented in Japan. Although the number of responsive home-visit nursing stations (HVNS) is increasing, the current situation of service provision has not yet been clarified. This study aimed to investigate the characteristics and difficulties of psychiatric home-visit nursing provided by HVNS.

Article Synopsis
  • Nursing theories emphasize the significance of individual and community care, focusing on human relationships within specific contexts, like communities.
  • The article presents the Community Caring for Public Health Nursing (CCPHN) theory, which is based on Fawcett's four nursing metaparadigms: persons, environment, health, and nursing, and includes three key assumptions about community caring.
  • The theory highlights the essential role of nurses in fostering caring communities through supportive practices, suggesting that further research is needed to confirm the impact of CCPHN on community health and well-being.

Introduction: Emerging evidence suggests that diabetes stigma and negative emotions associated with it may impair the quality of life of people with diabetes. Among these psychological distresses, shame is considered the most distressing of all human emotional experiences and may be a condition to which diabetes clinicians should pay attention. This epidemiological study focused on diabetes-related shame and aimed to determine the prevalence of diabetes-related shame, its factors, and its association with psychological indicators.

Benefit finding is a concept that refers to finding positive changes or benefits through negative experiences from stressful life events. The present study aimed to develop a new intervention program to facilitate benefit finding for people with mental illness and examine its feasibility and preliminary efficacy from pilot data. We hypothesized that participants who joined the group-based intervention program would show progress in benefit finding, personal recovery, and well-being, as well as alleviated psychiatric symptoms and functional impairment, compared to participants in the control group.

ERAD components Derlin-1 and Derlin-2 are essential for postnatal brain development and motor function.

iScience

July 2021

Laboratory of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, Department of Medical Sciences, University of Miyazaki, 5200 Kihara, Kiyotake, Miyazaki 889-1692, Japan.

Derlin family members (Derlins) are primarily known as components of the endoplasmic reticulum-associated degradation pathway that eliminates misfolded proteins. Here we report a function of Derlins in the brain development. Deletion of or in the central nervous system of mice impaired postnatal brain development, particularly of the cerebellum and striatum, and induced motor control deficits.

Nardilysin (NRDC) has been shown to be involved in post-translational histone modifications, in addition to enhancement in ectodomain shedding of membrane-anchored protein, which play significant roles in various pathophysiology, including glucose homeostasis, inflammatory diseases and cancer. The present study sought to determine roles of NRDC in the liver on lipid and lipoprotein metabolism. We established liver-specific NRDC deficient mice by use of NRD1 floxed mice and albumin promoter-Cre recombinase (Cre) transgenic mice, and found that their serum low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol levels were significantly lower than those in control littermate mice.

  • - Researchers analyzed 185 patients with severe MR from 2009 to 2010, identifying that the majority of prolapses occurred in the posterior leaflet and establishing a disjunction distance of ≥2 mm for diagnosis.
  • - Over a 20.3-year follow-up, 3.8% of patients experienced arrhythmic events or sudden death, highlighting the importance of assessing the presence and location of mitral annular disjunction in patients with fibroelastic deficiency. *
