The Kinematics of Proal Chewing in Rats.

Integr Org Biol

July 2024

Department of Biology, Knox College, Galesburg, IL 61401, USA.

Chewing kinematics are well-documented in several mammal species with fused mandibular symphyses, but relatively understudied in mammals with an unfused symphysis, despite the fact that more than half of extant Mammalia have an unfused mandibular symphysis. The Wistar brown rat () is widely used in human health research, including studies of mastication or neurological studies where mastication is the output behavior. These animals are known to have unfused mandibular symphyses and proal jaw (rostrocaudal) motion during occlusion, but the lack of high resolution, 3-dimensional analysis of rat chewing leaves the functional significance of symphyseal mobility unknown.

One-hundred-seventeen participants rated hypothetical individuals on the "Big Five" personality traits, narcissism, intelligence, and creativity. Hypothetical individuals differed according to namesake status (named after a parent/relative or not), sex, and birth order. Namesaking interacted with both sex and birth order on ratings of many personality traits, but sex and birth order were stronger predictors of personality stereotypes than was namesaking.

Instantaneous head posture (IHP) can extensively alter resting hyoid position in humans, yet postural effects on resting hyoid position remain poorly documented among mammals in general. Clarifying this relationship is essential for evaluating interspecific variation in hyoid posture across evolution, and understanding its implications for hyolingual soft tissue function and swallowing motor control. Using as a model, we conducted static manipulation experiments to show that head flexion shifts hyoid position rostrally relative to the cranium across different gapes.

We re-oriented the HEXACO personality dimensions to approximate the Big Five, using two measures of the Big Five as targets in a derivation sample and then in cross-validation samples. The HEXACO approximations of Big Five Agreeableness represented blends of HEXACO Agreeableness, Emotionality, and Honesty-Humility. The HEXACO approximations of Big Five Neuroticism represented blends of Emotionality with low Agreeableness and low Extraversion.

One of the most common cell shape changes driving morphogenesis in diverse animals is the constriction of the apical cell surface. Apical constriction depends on contraction of an actomyosin network in the apical cell cortex, but such actomyosin networks have been shown to undergo continual, conveyor belt-like contractions before the shrinking of an apical surface begins. This finding suggests that apical constriction is not necessarily triggered by the contraction of actomyosin networks, but rather can be triggered by unidentified, temporally-regulated mechanical links between actomyosin and junctions.

Electronic Configurations and the Effect of Peripheral Substituents of (Nitrosyl)iron Corroles.

Inorg Chem

December 2022

College of Materials Science and Optoelectronic Technology and Chinese Academy of Sciences Center for Excellence in Topological Quantum Computation, University of Chinese Academy of Sciences, Yanqi Lake, Huairou District, Beijing101408, P. R. China.

There have been debates on the electronic configurations of (nitrosyl)iron corroles for decades. In this work, pentacoordinate [Fe(TPC)(NO)], [Fe(TTC)(NO)], and [Fe(TFC)(NO)] with different -substituted phenyl groups (TPC, TTC, and TFC = tris(phenyl, 4-tolyl, or 4-fluorophenyl)corrole, respectively) have been isolated and investigated by various techniques including single-crystal X-ray diffraction, UV-vis spectroscopy, cyclic voltammetry, Fourier transform infrared, NMR, and absorption fine structure spectroscopy. Multitemperature and high-magnetic-field (3, 6, and 9 T) Mössbauer spectroscopy was also applied on all three complexes, which determined the = 0 diamagnetic states, consistent with the magnetic susceptibility and electron paramagnetic resonance measurements.

The experiences that domestic dogs have with humans take many forms. We hypothesized that more experience with humans would lead to greater dependence on humans in problem-solving situations. We used the unsolvable task to compare persistence and gazing in dogs with differing degrees of experience with humans: 1) dogs living in a home for a year or more; 2) dogs living in a home for less than a year (including foster dogs); and 3) shelter dogs.

Consensual facet structures help to unify a highly fractured personality literature, but mask information obtained from unique personality facets assessed by individual personality inventories. The current study identifies the consensual and unique facets of neuroticism, conscientiousness, and agreeableness based on analyses of five widely used personality inventories (Disinhibition Inventory-I [DIS-I], Faceted Inventory for the Five-Factor model [FI-FFM], HEXACO Personality Inventory-Revised [HEXACO-PI-R], NEO Personality Inventory-3 [NEO-PI-3], and Temperament and Affectivity Inventory [TAI]) in a community sample ( = 440). Factor analyses revealed that neuroticism consisted of three consensual facets (distress/depression, anger, and sentimental anxiety) and four unique facets (shyness, regret/self-doubt, lassitude, and distractibility); conscientiousness consisted solely of four consensual facets (achievement striving, order, attentiveness, and responsibility); and agreeableness consisted solely of four consensual facets (prosociality, anger, venturesomeness, and trust).

Many fishes use substantial cranial kinesis to rapidly increase buccal cavity volume, pulling prey into the mouth via suction feeding. Living polypterids are a key lineage for understanding the evolution and biomechanics of suction feeding because of their phylogenetic position and unique morphology. Polypterus bichir have fewer mobile cranial elements compared with teleosts [e.

Perspectives on Ligand Properties of N-Heterocyclic Carbenes in Iron Porphyrin Complexes.

Inorg Chem

January 2022

Department of Chemistry, School of Chemistry and Biological Engineering, Beijing Key Laboratory for Science and Application of Functional Molecular and Crystalline Materials, and Daxing Research Institute, University of Science and Technology Beijing, Beijing 100083, China.

There has been considerable research interest in the ligand nature of N-heterocyclic carbenes (NHCs). In this work, two six-coordinate NHC iron porphyrin complexes [Fe(TTP)(1,3-MeImd)] (TTP = tetratolylporphyrin, 1,3-MeImd = 1,3-dimethylimidazol-2-ylidene) and [Fe(TDCPP)(1,3-MeImd)]ClO (TDCPP = 5,10,15,20-tetrakis(2,6-dichlorophenyl)porphyrin) are reported. Single-crystal X-ray characterizations demonstrate that both complexes have strongly ruffled conformations and relatively perpendicular ligand orientations which are forced by the sterically bulky 1,3-MeImd NHC ligands.

Identification with drinking predicts increases in drinking behaviors (but not vice versa).

Addict Behav

May 2021

Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, School of Medicine, University of Washington, 1100 NE 45(th) Street, Suite 300, Seattle, WA 98105, United States.

Cross-sectional research has demonstrated that endorsing, or acknowledging, and frequently thinking about having a drinking identity are uniquely and positively associated with alcohol consumption and risk for hazardous drinking. In the current investigation, we evaluated whether these facets of drinking identity indicated a latent drinking identity variable. We also investigated whether greater identification with drinking predicted subsequent increases in alcohol consumption and risk for hazardous drinking, and whether higher levels of these drinking behavior variables predicted subsequent increases in identification with drinking.
