Introduction: This study evaluates the clinical value of a deep learning-based artificial intelligence (AI) system that performs rapid brain volumetry with automatic lobe segmentation and age- and sex-adjusted percentile comparisons.
Methods: Fifty-five patients-17 with Alzheimer's disease (AD), 18 with frontotemporal dementia (FTD), and 20 healthy controls-underwent cranial magnetic resonance imaging scans. Two board-certified neuroradiologists (BCNR), two board-certified radiologists (BCR), and three radiology residents (RR) assessed the scans twice: first without AI support and then with AI assistance.

Background: The aim of this clinical trial was to compare Fluorescein-stained intraoperative confocal laser endomicroscopy (CLE) of intracranial lesions and evaluation by a neuropathologist with routine intraoperative frozen section (FS) assessment by neuropathology.
Methods: In this phase II noninferiority, prospective, multicenter, nonrandomized, off-label clinical trial (EudraCT: 2019-004512-58), patients above the age of 18 years with any intracranial lesion scheduled for elective resection were included. The diagnostic accuracies of both CLE and FS referenced with the final histopathological diagnosis were statistically compared in a noninferiority analysis, representing the primary endpoint.

Inadequate adaption to mechanical forces, including blood pressure, contributes to development of arterial aneurysms. Recent studies have pointed to a mechanoprotective role of YAP and TAZ in vascular smooth muscle cells (SMCs). Here, we identified reduced expression of YAP1 in human aortic aneurysms.

Dissecting the pathways regulating the adaptive immune response in atherosclerosis is of particular therapeutic interest. Here we report that the lipid G-protein coupled receptor GPR55 is highly expressed by splenic plasma cells (PC), upregulated in mouse spleens during atherogenesis and human unstable or ruptured compared to stable plaques. -deficient mice developed larger atherosclerotic plaques with increased necrotic core size compared to their corresponding controls.

In healthy vessels, endothelial cells maintain a stable, differentiated, and growth-arrested phenotype for years. Upon injury, a rapid phenotypic switch facilitates proliferation to restore tissue perfusion. Here we report the identification of the endothelial cell-enriched long non-coding RNA (lncRNA) PCAT19, which contributes to the proliferative switch and acts as a safeguard for the endothelial genome.

Background: Improved treatment options for congenital heart disease (CHD) lead to a growing number of women with CHD at reproductive age. Due to physical and psychological burden, pregnancies in women with CHD often count for high-risk. Resulting emotional distress can adversely impact pregnancy, motherhood and fetal health.

Background And Aims: Esophageal adenocarcinoma (EAC) incidence has risen dramatically in the Western countries over the past decades. The underlying reasons are incompletely understood, and shifts in the esophageal microbiome have been postulated to increase predisposition to disease development. Multiple factors including medications, lifestyle, and diet could influence microbiome composition and disease progression.

The nitric oxide-cGMP (NO-cGMP) pathway is of outstanding importance for vascular homeostasis and has multiple beneficial effects in vascular disease. Neointimal hyperplasia after vascular injury is caused by increased proliferation and migration of vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMCs). However, the role of NO-cGMP signaling in human VSMCs in this process is still not fully understood.

Background: Diagnosis of pollen allergies is mainly based on test allergens for skin prick testing. In the minimum battery of test inhalant allergens recommended by the Global Allergy and Asthma European Network 10 pollen allergens are included. Complementary other pollen allergens may need to be considered; however, respective awareness may not always be granted.

Objective: Atherosclerosis is a leading cause of death in developed countries. MicroRNAs act as fine-tuners of gene expression and have been shown to have important roles in the pathophysiology and progression of atherosclerosis. We, and others, previously demonstrated that microRNA-144 (miR-144) functions to post-transcriptionally regulate ABCA1 (ATP binding cassette transporter A1) and plasma HDL (high-density lipoprotein) cholesterol levels.

Atherosclerosis underlies the predominant number of cardiovascular diseases and remains a leading cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide. The development, progression and formation of clinically relevant atherosclerotic plaques involves the interaction of distinct and over-lapping mechanisms which dictate the roles and actions of multiple resident and recruited cell types including endothelial cells, vascular smooth muscle cells, and monocyte/macrophages. The discovery of non-coding RNAs (ncRNAs) including microRNAs, long non-coding RNAs, and circular RNAs, and their identification as key mechanistic regulators of mRNA and protein expression has piqued interest in their potential contribution to atherosclerosis.

Background and Purpose- Endovascular treatment for large vessel occlusion in ischemic stroke has proven to be effective in large clinical trials. We aimed to provide real-world estimates of endovascular treatment reperfusion rates and functional outcome on a countrywide scale. Methods- Two thousand seven hundred ninety-four patients with large vessel occlusion were included into an investigator-initiated, industry-independent, prospective registry in 25 sites in Germany between June 2015 and April 2018.

Background: Endovascular treatment has become standard of care for the treatment of acute ischemic stroke with large vessel occlusion. However, patients treated in clinical practice differ from the selected populations randomized in clinical trials.
Aims: The German Stroke Registry Endovascular Treatment (GSR-ET) aims at a systematic evaluation of outcome, safety, and process parameters of endovascular stroke treatment in standard of care in Germany.

Methods: Recommendations of multidisciplinary review groups based on systematic literature reviews to answer predefined clinical questions are summarised. Recommendations are graded using the Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development and Evaluation system.

Background And Purpose: We recently identified mutations in the a3 (VI) collagen gene COL6A3 that cause autosomal-recessive isolated dystonia (DYT27). This article gives a detailed description of the clinical phenotype associated with this new type of dystonia.
Methods: A total of 5 recessive COL6A3 mutation carriers underwent clinical examinations, and case histories were recorded on videotape.

Background: The Ikkα kinase, a subunit of the NF-κB-activating IKK complex, has emerged as an important regulator of inflammatory gene expression. However, the role of Ikkα-mediated phosphorylation in haematopoiesis and atherogenesis remains unexplored. In this study, we investigated the effect of a bone marrow (BM)-specific activation-resistant Ikkα mutant knock-in on haematopoiesis and atherosclerosis in mice.
