Introduction: It is often difficult to clinically and radiologically diagnose intra-articular osteoid osteomas and osteoid osteomas of the hip joint. Treatment can also be difficult due to complex locational relationships. CT-guided radiofrequency ablation is currently the standard form of treatment.

Background: In order to minimize the risk of damaging the radial nerve while using a long PHILOS plate for proximal humerus fractures, recent studies have proposed twisting the plate in a helical form. This implies a modified surgical approach being yet unclear whether it leads to different middle to long-term shoulder function. This study compares the one-year shoulder functional outcomes of both techniques (helical vs.

Introduction: Suprastomal Collapse (SuStCo) is a common complication of prolonged tracheostomy in children. There is a paucity of literature on this subject, especially regarding how to manage significant suprastomal collapse that prevents safe decannulation.
Objective: Provide a definition, classification system, and recommend management options for significant suprastomal collapse in children with tracheostomy.

Due to a widespread organ shortage, the use of expanded criteria donors (ECDs) in kidney transplantation has increased persistently, reaching approximately 40% in recent years. Whether human leucocyte antigen (HLA) matching between donor and recipient should be part of allocation algorithms in transplantation of ECD kidneys, and especially of ECD kidneys from ≥70-year-old donors, is still in question. To this end, 135,529 kidney transplantations performed between 2000 and 2017 and reported to the Collaborative Transplant Study were analysed and the impact of HLA-A+B+DR mismatches on death-censored graft and patient survival as well as on rejection episodes was investigated.

Background: Humerus shaft fractures are common and often treated surgically with a proximal humerus internal locking system like the long PHILOS plate. Due to its close anatomical proximity to the humerus, the radial nerve is particularly susceptible to traumatic and iatrogenic damage. The iatrogenic radial nerve damage associated with internal locking systems is described in about 7% of the cases.

We report the case of a 4-year-old boy with a neuromucoepidermoid carcinoma of the left main bronchus. Complete resection of the carcinoma and reconstruction of the carina between lower and upper lobe by means of an end-to-end anastomosis was performed via a left-sided thoracotomy.

The current article is a summary of the 2018 revised S3 guideline on screening, diagnosis, therapy, and follow-up of the abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) from an anesthesiological point of view. It is the only interdisciplinary guideline that describes in particular the perioperative anesthesiological and intensive care management.

Background: Off-label use (OLU) of a drug reflects a perceived unmet medical need, which is common in oncology. Cancer drugs are often highly expensive and their reimbursement is a challenge for many healthcare systems. OLU is frequently regulated by reimbursement restrictions.

Purpose: Heritable factors play an important etiologic role in connective tissue disorders (CTD) with vascular involvement, and a genetic diagnosis is getting increasingly important for gene-tailored, personalized patient management.
Methods: We analyzed 32 disease-associated genes by using targeted next-generation sequencing and exome sequencing in a clinically relevant cohort of 199 individuals. We classified and refined sequence variants according to their likelihood for pathogenicity.

Background: Traumatic events like critical illness and intensive care are threats to life and bodily integrity and pose a risk factor for posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). PTSD affects the quality of life and morbidity and may increase health-care costs. Limited access to specialist care results in PTSD patients being treated in primary care settings.

Segmental degeneration in the human lumbar spine affects both the intervertebral discs and facet joints. Facet joint degeneration not only affects the cartilage surface, but also alters the cellular properties of the cartilage tissue and the structure of the subchondral bone. The primary focus of this study is the investigation of these microstructural changes that are caused by facet joint degeneration.

Purpose: The subretinal Alpha IMS visual implant is a CE-approved medical device for restoration of visual functions in blind patients with end-stage outer retina degeneration. We present a method to test the function of the implant objectively in vivo using standard electroretinographic equipment and to assess the devices' parameter range for an optimal perception.
Methods: Subretinal implant Alpha IMS (Retina Implant AG, Reutlingen, Germany) consists of 1500 photodiode-amplifier-electrode units and is implanted surgically into the subretinal space in blind retinitis pigmentosa patients.

In hereditary retinal diseases photoreceptors progressively degenerate, often causing blindness without therapy being available. Newly developed subretinal implants can substitute functions of photoreceptors. Retina implant extraocular surgical technique relies strongly on cochlear-implant know-how.

Delayed cerebral ischemia remains a severe potential complication of aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) possibly leading to death and disability. We evaluated a semiquantitative and visual analysis of perfusion computed tomography (PCT) as a predictor of clinically relevant vasospasm (CRV) in patients with aneurysmal SAH. Thirty-eight patients with aneurysmal SAH were analyzed yielding 145 PCT scans.

Background: Clinically, both viral load and genotypes have been found to be major predictors of antiviral therapy outcome regarding chronic hepatitis C and they are, under normal circumstances, performed as separate assays.
Design And Methods: In order to improve the diagnostic strategy and subsequently reduce the reagent costs we have developed and established the simultaneous quantification and genotyping of hepatitis C virus RNA by a two-step real-time PCR on the LightCycler Instrument (Roche Diagnostics).
Results: The quantification assay was calibrated against WHO Standard 96/790.

Microvascular compression of the vestibulocochlear nerve is known to cause disabling tinnitus and vertigo. A review of the literature shows that the compression is usually located in the cerebellopontine angle, and that it is usually caused by an artery. The authors add the case of a 46-year-old man with venous compression of the vestibulocochlear nerve inside the internal auditory canal (IAC).

The exact anatomical and biomechanical demands of correct positioning of prostheses can be critical for hip joint revision endoprosthetics. Preoperative planning cannot always be implemented due to the intraoperative situation. The reconstruction of the hip center, the correct alignment of the acetabulum and the shaft is difficult, especially in large defect situations.

There is a wide variety of devices and materials to be implanted into the human larynx. Some are intended to remain only for a period of time, like laryngeal stents. If removal is not intended the device meets the definition for a medical implant.

Medicinal adjuvants are often used in operative laryngology but their value is judged very differently. The scientific evidence is unsatisfactory for most of these substances. For corticosteroids it is proven that in pediatric intensive care they reduce stridor following extubation.

Unilateral recurrent nerve paralysis leads to glottic insufficiency, significantly reducing vocal ability. Due to its unusually long course, the recurrent laryngeal nerve is prone to iatrogenic lesions involves many medical fields generally with little expertise in voice disorders. Whenever the etiology is uncertain, a complete diagnostic work-up is mandatory.
