Pleomorphic adenoma (PA) is a benign salivary gland tumour that may recur or undergo malignant transformation (CXPA). Toll-like receptors (TLR) mediate immune responses triggered by various agents such as viruses and are related to tumour formation either by stimulating or suppressing their growth, with variation across different tumour entities. We compared TLR immunohistochemical expression in PA, its recurrent counterparts and CXPA and evaluated the effect of virus presence in these tumours.

Cancer-related inflammation is a crucial component of the tumor microenvironment (TME). Complement activation occurs in cancer and supports the development of an inflammatory microenvironment. Complement has traditionally been considered a mechanism of immune resistance against cancer, and its activation is known to contribute to the cytolytic effects of antibody-based immunotherapeutic treatments.

November 2023

Service d'Hépato-Gastroentérologie et Oncologie Digestive, Hôpital Universitaire d'Angers, Angers, France; Laboratoire HIFIH UPRES EA3859, SFR ICAT 4208, Université d'Angers, Angers, France. Electronic address:

Background & Aims: Drug development in nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) is hampered by a high screening failure rate that reaches 60% to 80% in therapeutic trials, mainly because of the absence of fibrotic NASH on baseline liver histology. MACK-3, a blood test including 3 biomarkers (aspartate aminotransferase, homeostasis model assessment, and cytokeratin 18), recently was developed for the noninvasive diagnosis of fibrotic NASH. We aimed to validate the diagnostic accuracy of this noninvasive test in an international multicenter study.

  • Transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI) using a percutaneous axillary approach is being evaluated for its safety and effectiveness compared to traditional surgical access.
  • An international study analyzed data from 432 patients, revealing that while the percutaneous approach had a higher rate of primary hemostasis failure, it led to shorter hospital stays and lower risks of major complications.
  • The findings suggest that percutaneous axillary access is as effective or potentially superior to surgical access for TAVI, especially for patients who cannot use the femoral approach.

Article Synopsis
  • Gastric adenocarcinoma is linked to H. pylori infection and changes in gut microbiota, but the relationship with different tumor types and intestinal microbiota is not well understood, prompting a study of Finnish patients' stool samples.
  • Results indicated that patients with diffuse adenocarcinoma had the lowest gut microbiota diversity, while significant differences in microbiota composition were found across all tumor types compared to healthy controls, particularly with increased Enterobacteriaceae.
  • The study suggests that higher levels of Enterobacteriaceae could serve as a potential marker for gastric tumors, and reduced gut microbiota diversity may indicate more aggressive cancer forms, serving as a possible prognostic indicator.

The age-standardised incidence of cervical cancer in Europe varies widely by country (between 3 and 25/100000 women-years) in 2018. Human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine coverage is low in countries with the highest incidence and screening performance is heterogeneous among European countries. A broad group of delegates of scientific professional societies and cancer organisations endorse the principles of the WHO call to eliminate cervical cancer as a public health problem, also in Europe.
