Article Synopsis
  • Leber's hereditary optic atrophy (LHON) is a genetic condition primarily affecting young males, caused by mutations in mitochondrial DNA that disrupt the electron transport chain, leading to vision loss.
  • The condition typically starts with vision impairment in one eye, quickly progressing to the other eye, resulting in very low visual acuity for many patients.
  • Differentiating LHON from other causes of optic neuritis involves various assessments, and collaboration between neurologists and ophthalmologists is vital for proper diagnosis and treatment.

[Tricuspid Valve Surgery through Transareolar Approach].

Kyobu Geka

July 2020

Department of Cardiovascular Surgery, Kitazato University, Sagamihara, Japan.

Right minithoracotomy has become the standard approach along with sternotomy in mitral and tricuspid valve surgery. Transareolar incision, compared with submammary incision, is advantageous in that it often allows better angle for antegrade cardioplegia cannulation through the main wound. It also provides a better cosmesis.

Genome-wide association studies are a powerful tool for searching for disease susceptibility loci. Several studies identifying single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNP) connected intimately to the onset of colorectal cancer (CRC) have been published, but there are few reports of genome-wide association studies in Japan. To identify genetic variants that modify the risk of CRC oncogenesis, especially in the Japanese population, we performed a multi-stage genome-wide association study using a large number of samples: 1846 CRC cases and 2675 controls.

Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS) is an acute monophasic neuropathy. Prognostic tools include the modified Erasmus GBS outcome score (mEGOS), Erasmus GBS respiratory insufficiency score (EGRIS), and the increase in serum IgG levels (ΔIgG) 2 weeks after intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIg) treatment. Given that proportions of GBS subtypes differ between Western countries and Japan, the usefulness of these tools in Japan or other countries remains unknown.

Aesthetic Plast Surg

November 1999

Department of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, Kitazato University School of Medicine, Kanagawa, Japan.

At present, one of the treatments of choice for closure of full-thickness skin loss is to use a cultured epidermal autograft when skin loss is extensive. In this study, we investigated a simple method of processing frozen surplus skin to produce an acellular, structurally intact, dermal matrix. First, the acellular dermal matrix prepared from normal human skin (ADM) we processed was observed using a transmission electron microscope and a scanning electron microscope.

September 1999

Department of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, Kitazato University School of Medicine, Sagamihara, Kanagawa, Japan.

As promising new therapy for congenital giant pigmented nevi, the authors investigated the potential use of an acellular autograft nevi-dermal matrix in combination with a split-thickness skin graft. To address whether the processed acellular nevi-dermal matrix from frozen skin could be reconstituted as a viable dermal base, the authors grafted it onto full-thickness skin defects in nude rats. Fibroblast infiltration and neovascularization into the acellular nevi-dermal matrix were observed.
