Background/aims: Leucine-rich α-2-glycoprotein (LRG) is a new serum biomarker reflecting the disease activity of ulcerative colitis (UC), but its change during the acute phase has not been enough investigated.
Methods: Patients with UC who initiated the induction therapy with steroid or advanced therapy (biologics or Janus kinase inhibitors) were prospectively enrolled. Associations of LRG, C-reactive protein (CRP) and fecal calprotectin (FC) at baseline, week 1, and week 8 with clinical remission at week 8 and subsequent endoscopic improvement within 1 year (Mayo endoscopic subscore of 0 or 1) were assessed.

Closely linked groups of markers on the X chromosome are very useful for testing complex kinship relationships involving X-STR transmission. The Argus X-12 kit, a unique commercially available kit, can obtain haplotypes of 4 linkage groups (LGs) consisting of 3 markers. Although many population data have been reported for forensic purposes, differences in discrimination ability exist between LG1 and LG2, 3, and 4 in East Asian populations, and the data of this kit would become more useful if the discrimination ability of the latter groups were increased.

Background: Opisthorchiid flukes, particularly Opisthorchis viverrini, Opisthorchis felineus, Clonorchis sinensis, and Metorchis spp. are the most common fish-borne zoonotic human liver flukes (hLFs). Liver fluke infections are more prevalent in resource-deprived and underprivileged areas.

We report the establishment of a human induced pluripotent stem cell (iPSC) line from a 54-year-old male patient with an A1555G mutation in the mitochondrial 12S ribosomal RNA gene (MTRNR1), associated with sensorineural hearing loss. The established iPSC line expressed stemness markers or undifferentiated state markers. We also demonstrated the capacity of the cells to differentiate into the three germ layers, suggesting its pluripotency and utility in the pathological study of sensorineural hearing loss and drug screening for ear disorders.

Double aortic arch (DAA) is a rare congenital abnormality characterized by a vascular ring that often requires surgical intervention due to respiratory complications. The DAA and right aortic arch with mirror-image branches (RAA-MB) represent abnormalities in development of the aortic arch. However, prognosis differs significantly, as the DAA forms vascular rings, whereas the RAA-MB typically does not.

Background: Chronic pain and numbness are common complaints in patients with ossification of the posterior longitudinal ligament of the spine (OPLL). However, it is unclear whether the current treatments are effective in patients with OPLL in terms of improving pain and numbness.
Methods: A cross-sectional survey of patients with OPLL was conducted to determine patient satisfaction with surgery and drug therapy for pain and numbness, and its association with health-related quality of life.

The beneficial effects of sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 (SGLT2) inhibitors in people with type 2 diabetes (T2D) and metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) have been suggested in several reports based on serological markers, imaging data, and histopathology associated with steatotic liver disease. However, evidence regarding their long-term effects is currently insufficient. In this retrospective observational study, 34 people with T2D and MASLD, treated with SGLT2 inhibitors, were examined by proton density fat fraction derived by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI-PDFF) and other clinical data before, one year after the treatment.

Background: To examine whether the "Effectiveness of Guideline for Dissemination and Education in psychiatric treatment (EGIUDE)" project affects the rate of prescriptions of hypnotic medication and the type of hypnotic medications prescribed among psychiatrists, for schizophrenia and major depressive disorder in Japan.
Methods: The EGUIDE project is a nationwide prospective study of evidence-based clinical guidelines for schizophrenia and major depressive disorder in Japan. From 2016 to 2021, clinical and prescribing data from patients discharged from hospitals participating in the EGUIDE project were used to examine hypnotic medication prescriptions The prescribing rate of hypnotics and the prescribing rate of each type of hypnotic (benzodiazepine receptor agonist, nonbenzodiazepine receptor agonist, melatonin receptor agonist, and orexin receptor antagonist) were compared among patients who had been prescribed medication by psychiatrists participating in the EGUIDE project and patients who had been prescribed medication by nonparticipating psychiatrists.

(1) : Despite documented clinical and pain discrepancies between male and female osteoarthritis (OA) patients, the underlying mechanisms remain unclear. Synovial myofibroblasts, implicated in synovial fibrosis and OA-related pain, offer a potential explanation for these sex differences. Additionally, interleukin-24 (IL24), known for its role in autoimmune disorders and potential myofibroblast production, adds complexity to understanding sex-specific variations in OA.

Purpose: The humanized antivascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) antibody bevacizumab (Bev) is efficacious for the treatment of NF2-related schwannomatosis (NF2), previously known as neurofibromatosis type 2. This study evaluated the safety and efficacy of a VEGF receptor (VEGFR) vaccine containing VEGFR1 and VEGFR2 peptides in patients with NF2 with progressive schwannomas (jRCTs031180184).
Materials And Methods: VEGFR1 and VEGFR2 peptides were injected subcutaneously into infra-axillary and inguinal regions, once a week for 4 weeks and then once a month for 4 months.

The aim of this study was to analyze the population pharmacokinetics of total and unbound concentrations of prophylactic cefazolin (CFZ) in patients with prostatectomy or nephrectomy. We also aimed to calculate a pharmacodynamics target unbound concentration that exceeded the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC), to design an effective dosing regimen. Briefly, 614 total concentration and 610 unbound concentration samples from 152 individuals were evaluated, using a nonlinear mixed-effects model.

Background: Current guidelines recommend the use of mechanical circulatory support (MCS) for patients with cardiogenic shock that is refractory to medical therapy. Bleeding is the most common complication of MCS. Transarterial embolization (TAE) is often performed to treat this complication, because it is a less invasive hemostatic procedure.

Acromegaly is a rare disorder characterized by excessive production of growth hormone (GH) from a pituitary tumor, typically leading to elevated glucose levels due to increased insulin resistance; hypoglycemia is rare. However, the long-term effect of excess GH on the peripheral organs is still unclear. Here we present a 69-year-old man evaluated for the cause of a hypoglycemic episode.

Here, we focused on the role of Nucleobindin 2 (NUCB2), a multifunctional protein, in gastric carcinoma (GC) progression. NUCB2 expression was investigated in 150 GC cases (20 non-invasive (pT1) and 130 invasive (pT2/pT3/pT4) tumors) by immunohistochemistry (IHC), and in situ hybridization for detection of the mRNA in 21 cases. Using GC cell lines, we determined whether NUCB2 expression was associated with specific cellular phenotypes.
