Background: During hearing aid (HA) fitting, individuals may experience better speech discrimination at normal speech levels and worse discrimination at loud speech levels than without an HA. Therefore, we investigated factors that worsen speech discrimination when the speech sound level increases.
Methods: Speech discrimination was measured in patients aged >20 years who had average hearing thresholds <90 dB on pure-tone audiometry.

Tissue flossing involves wrapping a rubber band around a muscle group for a few minutes while performing joint motion, enhancing ankle joint torque and range of motion. As limited ankle dorsiflexion range of motion and plantar flexion muscle weakness are risk factors for sports injury, assessing the therapeutic effects of tissue flossing is important. This study aimed to evaluate the immediate effects of calf tissue flossing on enhancing ankle joint torque and dorsiflexion range of motion.

Microsomal prostaglandin E synthase-1 (mPGES-1) is an isozyme of the prostaglandin (PG) E synthase that acts downstream of cyclooxygenase and catalyzes the conversion of PGH to PGE. The impact of genetic deletion of mPGES-1 on the development of 2,4,6-trinitrobenzene sulfonic acid (TNBS)-induced colitis, a well-established model of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), was investigated in this study. After administration of TNBS, mice deficient in mPGES-1 (mPGES-1 mice) showed more severe colitis than did wild-type (WT) mice.

Background: This study aimed to create a deep learning model for predicting phenotypic physical frailty from electronic medical record information in patients with cardiovascular disease.
Methods And Results: This single-center retrospective study enrolled patients who could be assessed for physical frailty according to cardiovascular health study criteria (25.5% [691/2,705] of the patients were frail).

Background: Contextual memory loss of emotional events plays a critical role in depression psychopathology. Individuals with depression, clinical or subclinical, exhibit enhanced and impaired memory for emotionally negative stimuli and context in an event, respectively. This suggests that contextual encoding may fail because of attentional interference caused by concurrent negative stimuli, possibly leading to contextual memory loss as a depression risk.

Introduction: The vascular endothelial glycocalyx, crucial for blood vessel integrity and homeostasis, is vulnerable to oxidative stress, leading to endothelial dysfunction, which strongly correlates with cardiovascular disease (CVD). This study investigates the protective effects of rivaroxaban, a factor X inhibitor, on the glycocalyx under oxidative stress condition.
Methods: We examined the impact of rivaroxaban on human umbilical vein endothelial cells exposed to acute and chronic H2O2-induced oxidative stress.

Purpose: To investigate the usage status of biologics for the chronic treatment of optic neuritis including neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorders in Japan.
Design: Multicenter retrospective case series.
Methods: Patients diagnosed with anti-aquaporin 4 antibody (AQP4-Ab) positive optic neuritis and had been initiated on biologics (satralizumab, eculizumab, and inebilizumab) between January 2020 and August 2022 were identified at 30 facilities in Japan.

We successfully treated a 4-year-old girl with short bowel syndrome and eosinophilic enterocolitis with teduglutide, a glucagon-like peptide-2 analog. Her eosinophilic enterocolitis was cured without relapse, and we were able to increase enteral nutrition. We found that teduglutide had an anti-inflammatory effect in this patient with eosinophilic gastrointestinal disease associated with short bowel syndrome.

Purpose: Oxygen extraction in skeletal muscle is an important determinant of exercise tolerance. Prolonged sitting decreases oxygen extraction in the gastrocnemius muscle. However, the underlying mechanism remains unknown, and preventive measures are yet to be established.

A conjunctival cyst is a rare yet significant complication following strabismus surgery. This report describes a nine-year-old girl who developed a conjunctival cyst after undergoing bilateral lateral rectus recession surgery for intermittent exotropia. Despite an uneventful surgery and standard postoperative care, she presented with a gradually enlarging subconjunctival mass in the left eye three months later.

Objectives: Occupational therapy (OT) studies of delirium have attempted to test the effectiveness of interventions to reduce the incidence and duration of delirium. Although some cognitive stimulation appears to be important, appropriate approaches to delirium characterized by cognitive dysfunction remain unclear. This study aimed to determine the incidence and duration of delirium in postoperative cardiovascular surgery patients at the initial time of OT to identify characteristics of patient demographics and cognitive function according to the presence or absence of delirium.

This investigation evaluated the microvascular permeability and ultrastructure of skeletal muscle capillaries in the skeletal muscle of diabetic (DIA) rats using two-photon laser scanning microscopy (TPLSM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Microvascular permeability was assessed in the tibialis anterior muscle of control (CON) and DIA (streptozocin) male Wistar rats ( = 20, 10-14 wk) by in vivo imaging using TPLSM after fluorescent dye intravenous infusion. Fluorescent dye leakage was quantified to determine microvascular permeability.

This study aimed to investigate the role of sex in the association between physical function and the occurrence of hospitalization and mortality among community-dwelling older adults with impairments in activities of daily living (ADL). Participants included community-dwelling older adults aged ≥65 years with ADL disabilities. Physical functions (hand grip strength [HGS], knee extension muscle strength, and comfortable walking speed [CWS]) were measured at baseline and analyzed for association with hospitalization and mortality by sex using Cox regression analysis, adjusted for potential confounders.

Objective: To clarify the effect of growth and advancing age on lymphatic capillarization in rat skeletal muscles, we examined the histological and biochemical changes of lymphatic capillaries in different fiber types of skeletal muscles across juvenile, young, and middle-aged generations.
Methods: We collected the tibialis anterior (TA), extensor digitorum longus (EDL), and soleus (SOL) muscles. Immunohistochemical staining using LYVE-1 and CD31 markers was used for lymphatic and blood capillaries, respectively.

Background: This study aimed to examine whether online interactive communication education using video materials was as effective as face-to-face education among healthcare college students.
Methods: The participants were healthcare college students who were enrolled in study programs to obtain national medical licenses. They participated in lectures and exercises on healthcare communication, both online (n = 139) and face-to-face (n = 132).

Introduction: This study aimed to compare the impact of different broach surface designs on post-operative clinical outcomes, bone reactions and changes in bone mineral density (BMD) in patients who underwent total hip arthroplasty (THA) using a fully hydroxyapatite coated and double tapered stem with either compaction shape (COM) or hybrid shape (HYB) broaches.
Materials And Methods: A retrospective analysis was conducted on 76 patients (100 hips) who underwent primary THA using the Avenir complete stem®. Patients were divided into two groups: the COM broach group (50 hips) and HYB broach group (50 hips).

Introduction: Cardiac remodeling is defined as cellular interstitial changes that lead dysfunction of the heart after injury. Placental growth factor (PlGF), a member of the VEGF family, has been reported to regulate cardiac hypertrophy in hemodynamic state. We therefore analyze the function of PlGF during cardiac remodeling using cardiac cells and fibroblasts, under Angiotensin II (AngII) stimulation.

Objective: Machine learning models were employed to discern patients' impressions from the therapists' facial expressions during a virtual online video counselling session.
Methods: Eight therapists simulated an online video counselling session for the same patient. The facial emotions of the therapists were extracted from the session videos; we then utilized a random forest model to determine the therapist's impression as perceived by the patients.
