Protocol for an independent patient data meta-analysis of prophylactic mesh placement for incisional hernia prevention after abdominal aortic aneurysm surgery: a collaborative European Hernia Society project (I-PREVENT-AAA).

Introduction: Incisional hernia (IH) is a prevalent and potentially dangerous complication of abdominal surgery, especially in high-risk groups. Mesh reinforcement of the abdominal wall has been studied as a potential intervention to prevent IHs. Randomised controlled trials (RCTs) have demonstrated that prophylactic mesh reinforcement after abdominal surgery, in general, is effective and safe.

Possible role of the botulinum toxin in the management of neurogenic thoracic outlet syndrome: a systematic review.

Introduction: Thoracic outlet syndrome (TOS) is related to the compression and/or the traction of the upper-limb neurovascular bundle, responsible for a chronic painful impairment. Neurogenic TOS (NTOS) is the most common manifestation. It remains a challenging diagnosis and its treatment is also difficult.

Trapeziometacarpal osteoarthritis and arthritis of the wrist.

Although the simultaneous occurrence of arthritis of the wrist and the base of the thumb is rare, it is nonetheless imperative to carry out a preoperative clinical and radiological assessment of the wrist when managing trapeziometacarpal osteoarthritis. The presence of pre-arthritic lesions or established wrist arthritis, even if treated, must be taken into consideration when treating osteoarthritis at the base of the thumb. The coexistence of these lesions determines the entire surgical strategy.

Outcome of Silicone Implant for Treatment After Failure of Primary Trapeziometacarpal Surgery.

Purpose: To evaluate the outcome of a silicone implant used after failure of primary trapeziometacarpal (TMC) surgery.

Methods: We retrospectively reviewed 22 Tie-in silicone implants performed between January 2005 and December 2015. All silicone implants were used for revision after failure of TMC surgery.

15-Deoxy-∆12,14-prostaglandin J2 (15d‑PGJ2) is a natural agonist of peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor γ (PPARγ) that displays anticancer activity. Various studies have indicated that the effects of 15d‑PGJ2 are due to both PPARγ-dependent and -independent mechanisms. In the present study, we examined the effects of a biotinylated form of 15d‑PGJ2 (b‑15d‑PGJ2) on hormone-dependent MCF‑7 and triple‑negative MDA‑MB‑231 breast cancer cell lines.

Anti-cancer effects of naturally derived compounds targeting histone deacetylase 6-related pathways.

Alterations of the epigenetic machinery, affecting multiple biological functions, represent a major hallmark enabling the development of tumors. Among epigenetic regulatory proteins, histone deacetylase (HDAC)6 has emerged as an interesting potential therapeutic target towards a variety of diseases including cancer. Accordingly, this isoenzyme regulates many vital cellular regulatory processes and pathways essential to physiological homeostasis, as well as tumor multistep transformation involving initiation, promotion, progression and metastasis.

Background: Work-related skin diseases (WSD) are caused or worsened by a professional activity. Occupational skin diseases (OSD) need to fulfil additional legal criteria which differ from country to country. OSD range amongst the five most frequently notified occupational diseases (musculoskeletal diseases, neurologic diseases, lung diseases, diseases of the sensory organs, skin diseases) in Europe.

P53 and Sirt1: routes of metabolism and genome stability.

The tumor suppressor p53 is a transcription factor that regulates key processes. But, the outcomes of the p53 response go beyond its role as a nuclear transcription factor. Sirtuin (SIRT1) regulates p53 functions as transcription factor.

Long and short non-coding RNAs as regulators of hematopoietic differentiation.

Genomic analyses estimated that the proportion of the genome encoding proteins corresponds to approximately 1.5%, while at least 66% are transcribed, suggesting that many non-coding DNA-regions generate non-coding RNAs (ncRNAs). The relevance of these ncRNAs in biological, physiological as well as in pathological processes increased over the last two decades with the understanding of their implication in complex regulatory networks.

Natural chalcones as dual inhibitors of HDACs and NF-κB.

Histone deacetylase enzymes (HDACs) are emerging as a promising biological target for cancer and inflammation. Using a fluorescence assay, we tested the in vitro HDAC inhibitory activity of twenty-one natural chalcones, a widespread group of natural products with well-known anti-inflammatory and antitumor effects. Since HDACs regulate the expression of the transcription factor NF-κB, we also evaluated the inhibitory potential of the compounds on NF-κB activation.

Use of FloSeal hemostatic matrix in a patient with severe postpartum hemorrhage.

FloSeal (hemostatic gelatin matrix with a human-derived thrombin component; Baxter Healthcare, Deerfield, IL, USA) hemostatic matrix is used as an adjunct to hemostasis when conventional procedures have proved ineffective. In the present case, FloSeal was used in combination with transfusions, NovoSeven (recombinant activated human factor VIIa; Novo Nordisk, Copenhagen, Denmark) and compression to achieve hemostasis in a patient with postpartum bleeding and hypofibrinogenemia due to primary acute fatty liver of pregnancy. The patient presented with signs of acute hepatic failure, modified renal failure and bleeding disorder at week 37 of pregnancy.
