Biomolecules

December 2023

Department of Biomolecular Sciences, School of Life Sciences, Chemistry and Pharmacy, Faculty of Health, Science, Social Care and Education, Kingston University London, Kingston upon Thames KT1 2EE, UK.

Previously, the protective role of the S-layer protein 2 (Slp2) of the vaginal 2029 (LC2029) strain against foodborne pathogens , serovar Enteritidis, and O157:H was demonstrated. We demonstrate the new roles of the Slp2-positive LC2029 strain and soluble Slp2 against infections. We show that LC2029 bacteria can adhere to the surface of the cervical epithelial HeLa cells, prevent their contact with , and block yeast transition to a pathogenic hyphal form.

Coupling finite and boundary element methods to solve the Poisson-Boltzmann equation for electrostatics in molecular solvation.

J Comput Chem

April 2024

Department of Mechanical Engineering and Centro Científico Tecnológico de Valparaíso, Universidad Técnica Federico Santa María, Valparaíso, Chile.

The Poisson-Boltzmann equation is widely used to model electrostatics in molecular systems. Available software packages solve it using finite difference, finite element, and boundary element methods, where the latter is attractive due to the accurate representation of the molecular surface and partial charges, and exact enforcement of the boundary conditions at infinity. However, the boundary element method is limited to linear equations and piecewise constant variations of the material properties.

Multilayer framework for digital multicomponent platform design for colorectal survivors and carers: a qualitative study.

Front Public Health

December 2023

Department of Pharmacy, School of Life Sciences, Pharmacy and Chemistry, Kingston University London, Kingston upon Thames, Surrey, United Kingdom.

Background: The advent of eHealth services offers the potential to support colorectal cancer (CRC) survivors and their informal caregivers (ICs), yet research into user needs and design requirements remains scant. This exploratory qualitative study addresses this knowledge gap by focusing on the development of a Digital Multicomponent Platform (DMP) designed to provide comprehensive support to these populations.

Aims: The objective of this research is to use qualitative methodologies to identify key user needs and design requirements for eHealth services.

Introduction: The English National Health Service (NHS) Diabetic Eye Screening Programme (DESP) performs around 2.3 million eye screening appointments annually, generating approximately 13 million retinal images that are graded by humans for the presence or severity of diabetic retinopathy. Previous research has shown that automated retinal image analysis systems, including artificial intelligence (AI), can identify images with no disease from those with diabetic retinopathy as safely and effectively as human graders, and could significantly reduce the workload for human graders.

Article Synopsis
  • Cardiotoxicity, a significant side effect of tyrosine-kinase inhibitors (TKIs) and immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs), is often under-reported and can affect patients with non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC).
  • A study at The Royal Marsden Hospital analyzed 451 patients, finding that 19.5% developed cardiotoxicity, particularly among those with prior diabetes, a history of smoking, or existing cardiovascular disease.
  • Results suggest that these risk factors could interact, increasing the likelihood of cardiotoxicity, highlighting the need for better risk stratification to enhance patient care in the context of cancer treatment.

The medicine burden of people living with HIV (PLWH) is unknown. Between 2018 and 2020, participants completed a survey comprising outcome measures for medicine burden (LMQ-3) and stigma experiences (SSCI-8). Participants were HIV+ adults (≥18 years), using antiretrovirals (ARV) with or without non-ARV medicines, recruited via two outpatient clinics in southeast England and online via HIV charities across the UK.

Introduction: Disparities in the uptake of routine and COVID-19 vaccinations have been observed in migrant populations, and attributed to issues of mistrust, access and low vaccine confidence. Participatory research approaches and behaviour change theory hold the potential for developing tailored vaccination interventions that address these complex barriers in partnership with communities and should be explored further.

Methods: This study used a theory-informed, community-based participatory research approach to co-design a culturally tailored behaviour change intervention aimed at increasing COVID-19 vaccine uptake among Congolese migrants in London, United Kingdom (2021-2022).

Pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) are an indispensable component of a healthy society. However, they are well-established environmental contaminants, and many can elicit biological disruption in exposed organisms. It is now a decade since the landmark review covering the top 20 questions on PPCPs in the environment (Boxall et al.

The aim of this study was to analyze perceptions of strength training in vocational circus and dance students. It was hypothesized that due to the higher relative strength demands and associated risks of working at height in some aerial and acrobatic disciplines that circus students would be more open to strength training than dancers. Eighty students completed the Training Information Survey (TIS) (Mean age = 20.

Article Synopsis
  • AI technology is increasingly recognized for its potential to improve cancer care, leading to a study focused on healthcare professionals' (HCPs) views on AI's role in cancer treatment as part of the INCISIVE EU project.
  • The study used mixed methods, including anonymous online surveys filling out responses from 95 HCPs and in-depth interviews with 27 HCPs from various European countries to gather insights on current practices and needs.
  • While many HCPs reported issues like diagnostic delays and false positives in existing imaging methods, they generally agreed that implementing AI technology could enhance patient care but also highlighted a lack of familiarity with such tools, indicating a need for further training and education.

The Development and Potential of a Digital out of Home Food Environment Monitoring Platform.

Nutrients

September 2023

World Health Organization European Office for the Prevention and Control of Noncommunicable Diseases, Special Initiative on NCDs and Innovation, 2100 Copenhagen, Denmark.

The rapidly growing field of digital meal delivery platforms has transformed the out of home (OOH) food environment, presenting both opportunities and challenges for public health. This paper introduces the development and potential of a novel digital platform designed for monitoring the OOH food environment. Drawing on publicly available data from meal delivery applications, this platform provides valuable insights into the landscape of digital food offerings, such as the most common restaurants per region, average caloric content per meal type, and energy value per monetary unit.

Cervical carcinogenesis is the leading cause of cancer-related deaths in women, and the role of high-risk human papillomavirus (HR-HPV) as a possible risk factor in the development of this cancer is well recognized. Despite the availability of multi-therapeutic approaches, there is still major concern regarding the prevention of metastatic dissemination and excessive tissue injuries. Therefore, it is imperative to develop a safer and more efficient treatment modality.

Environ Toxicol Pharmacol

September 2023

Department of Civil, Environmental and Geomatic Engineering, University College London, London WC1E 6BT, United Kingdom. Electronic address:

Microplastics are present in the environment, in drinking water, in human blood and there is evidence of nanoplastics in tap water. The objective of this work was to analyze the possibility of hemodialysis patients being contaminated by micro and nanoplastics (MNPs) during dialysis treatment. The motivation for this investigation is the fact that hemodialysis patients use about 300-600 L of drinking water per week, which may be contaminated by MNPs.

Primary care networks (PCNs) are geographical networks consisting of 30,000 to 50,000 patients and groups of general practices working in a multidisciplinary team, including community pharmacists. Community pharmacy (CP) neighbourhood leads act as a conduit between pharmacy contractors and general practitioners (GPs) in these networks, sharing information and providing a voice for the community pharmacy locally. The Lambeth medicines team (NHS South East London Integrated Care Board) recognised the need to continue funding these leadership roles to address barriers to relationship-building between community pharmacies and general practices, the consistency of service delivery and effective communication.
